1 The Columns 2015 Calvary Baptist Church 608 Campbell, Avenue, S.W. Roanoke, VA (540) Dr. Ray Allen, Interim Pastor Seung-Won Cho, Minister of Music Donna de Simone, Director of Preschool Ministry Debbie Foutz, Office Manager Junkyard or an Oilfield? In Tyler Texas an elderly couple made a poor living by running a junkyard. When they turned 65 they sold the junkyard and retired to live the rest of their life just getting by on their social security check. The new owner brought in a front end loader and truck and hauled all the junk away. He brought an oil rig and began drilling. At a very shallow depth he struck oil. He had discovered that East Texas was the largest in the world at that time. He became very wealthy. One owner only saw land as a place for a junkyard. The other looked beneath the surface and struck it rich. Churches are like that. All communities change. Some see that as an opportunity. They reach out to the new community and grow and grow. Others soon find an excuse to be exclusive and ignore the new community. They start to think about survival not outreach. Soon our new paint job is going to say to the community Calvary is not dead, it is alive. The Gym will be fixed and hopeful it can be used to reach out to the community. A new day is beginning. Let us go forward one step at a time. Ray Allen The Wednesday lunchtime Bible Study will continue in with a focus on 1 st Peter. We hope you will join us on Wednesdays at 12:10 p.m. for the bible study led by Led by Dr. Ray Allen, Interim Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. Bring a sandwich and eat your lunch during the study. Coffee and tea provided.
2 As our Summer hiatus is winding down Calvary s Music Department is gearing up for a fun and active Fall session, including kickoff party and Open House for new and returning choir members on Wednesday, 12th, a performance of the National Anthem at the Salem Red Sox Game on Friday, 14th. Calvary s Sanctuary choir, led by Minister of Music Seung-Won Cho, is made up of high schoolers through senior adults, rehearses on Wednesday evenings, September through mid-june, from 6:30-8:30 pm. The choir sings nearly every Sunday during this time, as well as during some of the special services, especially at Christmas and Easter. If you are not an experienced singer, do not worry! We can help you develop your skills. If you cannot be regular in attendance, we can work something out. We are glad to have you! TOP TEN REASONS FOR JOINING THE CHURCH CHOIR 10. You always have a great reserved seat for Christmas and Easter. 9. No auditions or solos required! 8. No special tools or gear is required. The most perfect instrument, the human voice, is built right into our own bodies. 7. There are no monthly membership fees and no contracts 6. The choir chairs are padded and are the most comfortable seats in the church! 5. You don t have to worry about selecting a matching outfit for Sunday services since you ll have on a choir robe! 4. Rehearsal on Wednesday night means one night away from the stresses of busy life AND it s a great way to start the second half of your week! 3. Rehearsals are a time of learning music but even more than that, they are a time of laughter, of sharing and of deepening our faith in Jesus Christ 2. Studies prove people who are involved in music live longer and are healthier. Singing causes the mind to focus and the body to relax. It cheers the spirit and lightens the heart. and the #1 reason for joining the church choir Participating in the musical leadership of the Church s Worship Service is an excellent way to return to God your time and talents. Through singing in the choir, you will learn about music and worship, and deepen your lived faith. You will also make new friends and enjoy lasting relationships with old ones. Come join us for our Choir Party and Open House on Wednesday evening, 12 th at 6PM. We ll share some pizza, listen to some of the music Seung-Won has prepared for the Fall and Christmas seasons, and tune up to be ready to sing the National Anthem at the Salem Red Sox game on Friday, 14 th.

Emily Dickenson BAPTIST FRIENDSHIP HOUSE, on Elm Avenue, has been sharing the love of Jesus in Old S W since The House strives to provide opportunities for relationships to develop between church volunteers and the people of inner city Roanoke. 5 Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Cor. 14:40 Thanks to all who stayed for the Called Church in Conference on July 12 th. A special thanks to our Facilities committee whose work in preparing and sharing information to the group led to loud approvals of the recommendations to paint the building, repair the air conditioning in the gymnasium and allow our facility to be used as a Roanoke City voting precinct. The next regularly scheduled Fall Church in Conference will be held Sunday, September 9 th. A good time was had by all who traveled to Abingdon to see the Barter Theatre s production of Keeping on the Sunny Side. In fact, it was so much fun that we ve been asked to plan more outing! A survey regarding possible future trips was in the Sunday bulletin on July 26 th. If you haven t had a chance to complete the survey, and would like to join us for one of our upcoming Field Trips, please call and let us know what you would like to do! Options are: D. Day Memorial and meal at Liberty Station Restaurant (The Old Bedford Depot) Mabry Mill and meal at the restaurant Peaks of Otter and meal Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson s Summer Home Hurt Park School Supply Drive There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land. Deuteronomy 15:11 Swim gear is on sale, red, white and blue items are packed away, and back to school sales have begun. Once again, we can help our Hurt Park students begin their school year with new supplies. Visit our School Store in the parlor on Sunday, 2 and 9, where you may purchase items for these students. The faculty, staff and students at Hurt Park are so appreciative for all Calvary does for them. Thanks to your generosity, our previous efforts have been very successful. We look forward to providing help again to these children. Janice Deyerle
6 On Saturday, 29 th, best selling author and church consultant Eddie Hammet will lead a workshop, Recovering Hope for Your Church, Moving Beyond Maintenance to Mission and Incarnational Engagement. The workshop will be held at Grandin Court Baptist Church from 10am 2pm. Topics will include: Explore where your church is now and where God is leading you next Explore ways your church can engage in finding hope, activating hope, living into hope and sustaining hope Network with churches and leaders who are on similar journeys Learn to designate ministries for members on the go The cost for the seminar ($25 per person or $20 for groups of 5+) includes training and lunch. Online registration/payment is available at Music Notes The popular local band, REVELATION will perform a free concert at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, 16 th at 4PM. The band describes their musical style as a blend of Barbershop quartet, Gospel and Doo-Wop. Revelation has been providing entertainment in and around the Roanoke Valley for over a decade, receiving rave review from audiences across the region at churches, festivals, organizational events, birthday and retirement parties, baseball games, and health facilities. Revelation s tight harmonies and musical style has made them a popular and much sought-after quartet and repeat performance requests are the norm. Gospel music has been the foundation of the music performed by the group but over time music selections have broadened to include Doo-Wop, 50 s and 60 s music, Barbershop, love ballads and Broadway selections. A spokesman for the group, Dr. Chris Monroe, comments, Through it all, Revelation shares the joy of music and the love of Jesus Christ. Come and bring your family and friends to this free event sponsored by Calvary s Music Department. Funny Bones A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Preacher," said the young man, "I'm sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."
