FROM THE REGISTERS HOLY BAPTISM at Badby on 23 December Ivy Joy Pettet and Sophie Isabella Pettet Shine as a light in the world, to the Glory of God the Father Dear friends, This year will see events commemorating the end of the Great War, 100 yrs. ago and beyond the recall of anyone alive today. Several of our parishes and churches have memorials and list of those who served. Although their families may honour their relatives it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to describe their personalities, their quirks, their pastimes or hobbies. As we move inexorably further away from such events that have had such a profound effect on our shared history the phrase "we will remember them" takes on new meanings. How do we remember those whom we have never met? How do we honour them? How do we understand anything about that sort of national wartime when our own conflicts seem so different? THE RECTOR'S LETTER February) we will be offering the opportunity to spend some time reflecting on the nature of war and especially how we now represent that Great War. We will be screening some films, representations of war in different ways, and offering a chance to chat over a cup of tea about anything these films raise for you. These Lent films are open to everyone, see elsewhere for the specific details of when they are to be shown. Increasingly such films will be the way that we explain to ourselves what society thinks about such events. No longer having people to ask about what it was like, it will be written and filmed representation that we rely on to touch such great events. I thoroughly recommend you to think about coming along to a screening. Blessings, This year as part of the churches Lent reflections (Lent beginning 14 th 3 4

3 EVENING SERVICE OF THE WORD Not able to come to church on Sunday? Why not try the Evening Service of The Word? Held once a month on Tuesday evening (following the third Sunday of the month) at 6.30pm at St... Mary s Badby, this friendly, peaceful service lasts no longer than 25 minutes. Led in turn by some of those who attend, there is always a brief talk about somebody inspirational such as Thomas Cranmer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Caroline Chisholm. All welcome! Forward ESOW dates are February 20 and March 20. During the alterations to St.. Mary s, this service will be held in the chancel as usual but entrance will be by the Priest s Door. LENT FILMS As 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, in lieu of a Lent course this year, we will be showing a series of four films on the theme of the Great War. Enclosed with this copy of the Link is a flyer with details of the films and the screening dates, times and venue. After each screening there will be refreshments and an opportunity for discussion (optional!). Entrance is free, although we would appreciate donations to help cover costs. It would assist our planning if you would let Frances know in advance if you intend to come - on tel or williamsf333@aol.com JAZZ CONCERT AT BADBY VILLAGE HALL, Saturday March 3rd There are still a small number of tickets for this concert, with star pianist Tom Kincaid and supporting cast of Dave Leithead (trumpet) and Bob Caldwell (saxophone). Ticket 16 to include interval fish & chips, bring your own drinks (glasses provided). Ring / or bobcaldwell@uwclub.net to reserve a booked seat. ANNUAL WEATHER REPORT Many thanks as usual to Claire Hoare at Little Preston, Edgar Mobbs at Newnham, and June Pound at Charwelton for their notes on the 2017 weather records. And a very warm welcome to Penny Eves from Preston Capes who joins the group this year. BENEFICE PAGE 5 The 2017 records demonstrate once again how varied are the weather patterns among the villages despite us being geographically so close. Once again Newnham was the wettest village with 757mm, followed by Charwelton with 741mm, Little Preston with 617mm and then Preston Capes a positive desert with 491mm. The wettest month was December in Newnham and Charwelton, but August in Preston Capes and May in Little Preston. The wettest days of the year were 8th. August at Preston Capes with 22mm and 27th. December in Charwelton with 28mm. The driest months on the other hand were October for Newnham and Charwelton, and April in Little Preston. So far as temperatures are concerned, (recorded by June and Penny) the hottest day recorded was at Preston Capes on 21st June with C (June was on holiday at that time so no record for Charwelton) and the coldest nights were C on 27 Jan at Preston and -9 0 C at Charwelton on 12 December. Do you fancy walking from Land's End to John O'Groats? No, nor me. But one of my grand-daughters, Caitlin aged 11, was staying with us after Christmas and one morning she came with me to help deliver the Link round Charwelton. She often comes to stay and knows the village well, and as we were chatting she asked me about my delivery schedule. I explained that I have been delivering the Link and its predecessors to the 90-odd houses in Charwelton every month since Gordon High retired in Now Caitlin has one of these FitBit things which tells you all sorts of things you would rather not know about your daily activities, including how far you have walked that day. So she measured the distance of our delivery round, and when we got home sat down and worked out how many miles I had walked doing that task over the last 37 years She told me that I 6 had travelled the equivalent of walking from Land's End to John O'Groats!! So there you are; you can do these things without even knowing. We had a very busy month of December having started with an earlier than usual Christingle and the launch of our Travelling Crib. We then hosted Advent Carols for the local Mothers Union and the Christmas Story/Carols for the Weedon section of the Girl Guides, and for the Village School, all of which were very well supported. The highlight however was the Nativity play which was undoubtedly the best (funniest) yet. The children acted their parts brilliantly, particularly baby Jesus who wiggled and kicked in the crib, and the donkey (pony) who had difficulty with the step and then left his "calling card" in the chancel! Very many thanks to all those who helped make it possible, and to the 100 plus who supported us. The Christmas Day service was well attended (24) but 11.00am does not seem to be a popular time. SNOWDROP SUNDAY On Sunday 18th February we shall be holding our traditional Snowdrop Sunday. Weather permitting there should be a wonderful display throughout the Village, especially in the churchyard and surrounding verges, the Woodland Trust area, and at the Nuttery. There will be a nominal charge for church funds. Teas/coffee and home made cakes will be available in the Village Hall from 2.00pm. FOOD BANK Once again very many thanks to those who continue to leave food in the collecting box at the back of the church, particularly for those items left over the Christmas period. They are regularly taken to Daventry where they are always gratefully received. COFFEE MORNING The next Newnham Coffee Morning will be on 17th. March at Jeff and Pat's NEWNHAM VILLAGE HALL Jumble Sale in the Village Hall (in aid of maintenance) Saturday 10th March from pm. Entrance 20p. As usual there will be many varied stalls including bargains of top quality bric-a-brac, nearly new clothes, children s clothes, books, toys, cakes etc. Also come and enjoy tea with cake. (The hall will be open on the morning from am for delivery of goods). NEWNHAM WI Newnham W I will be meeting in the village hall on February 16th for their usual monthly meeting the speaker on this evening will be Neil McMahon, who will tell us about the wild life of Pitsford Reservoir. This will add another interest when next walking around the reservoir and knowing what to look out for. If this of interest to you and you would like to join us you are very welcome as usual just telephone Carol on or Sue on for further details. 4 Feb 25 Feb 4 Mar 4 Feb 25 Feb February March CHARWELTON Correspondent - David Pound Reader / Sidesman Norman Blenkhorn Gordon & Elizabeth Bird Penny Cory Flowers Annabelle Orr Lent - no flowers Chapel cleaning Pauline Donnelly/ Graham White June Pound 7 8

The APCM elects the PCC for the following year, and receives the various annual reports on the church's activities. Voting at that meeting is restricted to those on the church electoral roll. These meetings offer an opportunity for you to be involved in decisions about the church and everyone is warmly invited to attend. Members of the PCC please note that there will be a short meeting after the service on 25 Feb. to approve the various annual reports. Those reports - from the Churchwarden, Treasurer, Secretary and Deanery Rep. - need to be with Penny Cory in time for them to be circulated before that meeting. It was special to have our retiring Postman Tom Campbell and his wife June as special guests and our star organiser Heather Wilson assisted by PCC members laid on a great buffet supper, good wines and beer, Tim Wilson s quiz, and an attractive raffle and game for the bottle of whisky. Very appropriately our guests the Campbells won both the first prizes! Thank you to all who helped and 409 was made for church funds. THE CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL The Roll was renewed in 2013, but additions can be made. Baptised parishioners over 16 years are eligible. Importantly being on the Roll entitles you to elect to the bodies which govern the Church s affairs. It is also a statement that you support the church here. The Roll numbers 33 parishioners at this time. Would you like to join the Roll? Enrollment forms can be obtained from the Roll Officer Bernard Rapson, or the Churchwardens. Completed forms must be received by the Roll Officer by 1 st March, please. ANNUAL VESTRY AND PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETINGS These will take place on Wednesday 4 th April at 7.00 pm in the Church. It is the meeting when our church officers and PCC are appointed for another year. Everyone is welcome to attend, but only those on the Church Electoral Roll for the parish can vote. See above. PLANNED GIVING The new year is a good time to review our own tithing or personal level of financial support for our church. Please review your giving and whether it should be raised for inflation (suddenly a threat again), or better personal circumstances. This year our parish share (PS) which pays for our portion of the Rector s time has increased by a fierce 11% to With all running costs of the Church account close to per annum, it equates to 195 a year for every house here, or 3.75 per house per week, year after year! Please can everyone do their bit to share this and help ensure we pay PS in full. Our Hon Treasurer, Elizabeth Dearns [contact details on the back page] will be pleased to help anyone with 10 the paperwork for tax efficient giving, so that Gift Aid comes back to the church. The PCC extends a big thank you to all our regular donors. All planned giving is treated in strict confidence. WOMEN S INSTITUTE This month s WI meeting takes place on Tuesday, 27 th February, at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Chris Farmer on the subject of Musicals. Prospective members and guests welcome.
