HOLY BAPTISM at Preston Capes on 11 th February Richard John Mansfield Shine as a light in the world, to the Glory of God the Father FROM THE REGISTERS IN MEMORIAM at Newnham on 23rd. January Emily Lilian Payne (from Badby) at Fawsley on 28th January John McVittie [Interment of Ashes] at Charwelton on 8th. February Christine Olive Russell [Interment of Ashes] at Newnham on 15th. February Kenneth Malcolm Thomas Whitmore LETTER FROM BISHOP JOHN Following Jesus in the steps of St David and St Patrick I was recently invited to speak at a special event to celebrate St David s Day, which is kept at the start of this month. Seeking inspiration, I listened to a recording of the crowd at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium singing the Welsh National Anthem Land of my Fathers before a rugby international! Reading the various accounts of David s life was fascinating, inspiring and challenging. He would pray for hours whilst standing in the river with the water up to his neck. His community worked long hours in the fields and then remained at their devotions until the stars were seen in heaven. When he died on March 1 st his final words to the great crowd who had come to mourn were; Brothers and sisters, be cheerful. Keep the faith and do the little things you have seen and heard from me. Lots of groups claim him as one of their own a poetic David, a nationalist David, a green David - but he always seems bigger than these and resists all attempts to define him in any one way. When I asked a wise Welsh vicar about this, he replied; The key to David, and this is why he doesn t belong to any one group, is that he only really ever belonged to Jesus. He was always Christ s man. What a wonderful description. This reminded me of the prayer attributed to the other great Celtic patron saint we celebrate this month, St Patrick (March 17 th ), which rigorously focusses our attention upon Jesus. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. With my prayers and best wishes Grant them peace, and let light perpetual shine upon them 3 4

3 EVENING SERVICE OF THE WORD Not able to come to church on Sunday? Why not try the Evening Service of The Word? Held once a month on Tuesday evening (following the third Sunday of the month) at 6.30pm at St. Mary s Badby, this friendly, peaceful service lasts no longer than 25 minutes. Led in turn by some of those who attend, there is always a brief talk about somebody inspirational such as Thomas Cranmer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Caroline Chisholm. All welcome! Forward ESOW dates are March 20 and April 17. During the alterations to St. Mary s, this service will be held in the chancel as usual but entrance will be by the Priest s Door. MID-WEEK COMMUNION Following the postponement of Revd. Sue s operation, the 9.30am Mid-week Communion at Badby Church on Thursday 1 st March - previously cancelled - has been reinstated. As building work continues, please enter via the small priest s door. LENT FILMS As 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, in lieu of a Lent course this year, we will be showing a series of four films on the theme of the Great War. Enclosed with last month's copy of the Link was a flyer with details of the films and the screening dates, times and venue. These are repeated below. After each screening there will be refreshments and an opportunity for discussion (optional!). Entrance is free, although we would appreciate donations to help cover costs. It would assist our planning if you would let Frances know in advance if you intend to come - on tel or williamsf333@aol.com 6 March - Testament of Youth 13 March - Gallipoli 20 March - Private Peaceful SING-ALONG-A'-REVD SUE Wednesdays at Newnham February 21st February 28th March 14th BENEFICE PAGE March 21st May 30th June 20th July 4th SPATS LANGHAM COMING TO BADBY VILLAGE HALL, SATURDAY 2nd JUNE Spats Langham, one of the country s leading guitar, banjo and 20s style vocal exponents, brings his Quartet to Badby in June. EASTER FLOWERS With the Knightley Parishes Easter Sunday service being at Newnham led by the Bishop of Brixworth, our flower arrangers will not be in decorating mode. The full show of flowers will be postponed until July 15 when the Bishop blesses the major works. BADBY CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL We will be revising the electoral roll on April 2-4. As well as Parish, District and County Councillors, village organisations will be attending, each with a table where they can display and talk about what they have been doing.
