Brother Knights and families, After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone. (Mt 14:23) It is hard to believe we are now entering the Lenten Season, so soon after Christmas. As Catholics, and more importantly as Knights, we have come to realize that Lent is a great opportunity to re-focus our lives and to recommit ourselves to a Christ-centered, charitable life. We remember from our catechesis, that Lent is a penitential season where we spend 40-days preparing ourselves for Easter through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We have already likely figured out what we will give-up for Lent. Throughout most of our lives, we typically focus on the fasting part of Lent with perhaps a little less emphasis on the other important aspects of the season: almsgiving and prayer. Perhaps this Lenten Season we can add to our Lenten practices opportunities for charity and, more importantly, prayer. No doubt, our lives are hectic between work, family and even our Knightly commitments. We invariably find ourselves moving with great speed but perhaps very little direction. Our daily lives, at times, can be filled with failure or frustration and may cause us to be discouraged. At other times, our lives are filled with successes and it s easy for us to become prideful. In either case, we can do damage to our charitable-hearts. The practice of solitude allows God to help us find perspective. It is important, no matter how busy we are, to find time to be alone with God, even if it s only for a few minutes. We need to seek out the opportunity for solitude. Perhaps a few minutes in the morning before our family gets up, or in the shower, or on the drive to and from work; even a few minutes alone at our desk or perhaps for a brief period before we fall asleep at night. Solitude is not always easy to find, but it is necessary for our spiritual, physical and mental health. Jesus himself taught us the importance of solitude. In the scripture extract above from Matthew, after feeding the masses, Jesus goes off to be alone with the Father. It not the only time Jesus did so before or after many major events. Jesus ensured he spent time alone with the Father (Mt 4;1-11; Lk 6:12-13; Mt 14:13; Mt 21:17). Lent is a great time for us to practice solitude. Additionally, reading Scripture on a daily basis is another great way for us to recalibrate ourselves as servants of God striving to imitate Jesus. There is no greater source of God s revelation than the Holy Scripture and reading and reflecting on it on a regular basis will not only help us grow in the knowledge of our faith, but also help us live better lives as Catholic men, knights and fraternal-leaders. There are a multitude of resources available to help us read and reflect on the scriptures both on the Internet and within our parishes. Of course our own Knights to Christ Book is a great resource as well. It is my prayerful hope that if we aren t already, we add this practice of reading scripture as a new habit beginning this Lenten season. I also ask you as fraternal leaders, to ensure our council programs during Lent are geared towards helping our members, their families and our fellow parishioners grow in charity and faith. If your council already helps with fish fry s or other Lenten meals on Friday s during Lent that is great. If your councils sponsor and attend on a regular basis the Stations of the Cross or lead the Rosary before or after Mass, even better. If your council is searching for other Lenten program ideas, please go to the Supreme Council Building the Domestic Church Web Site at As Catholic men and their families attend events hosted by the council or parish, they may be seeking an opportunity to serve in a greater way. Please offer them an opportunity to join us as Knights of our great Order. An opportunity that will allow them to grow in faith and charity. On a personal note. My family and I are very grateful for the prayers, words of encouragement, s, texts and cards in the aftermath of the death of our grandson John-Edrick Joseph Doherty-Garces during childbirth. They are making a difference and I ask your continued prayers Your Most Humble Servant in Christ, Jay Doherty Jay Doherty Colorado State Deputy

MASTER S KNIGHTLY NEWS The New Year is in full swing and time to move forward. I would ask that each Faithful Navigator review with their assembly officers how their assembly moving forward. Does your assembly have in place a membership and a program director in place? If not, why not? Is your assembly involved in any programs that exemplify the principle of Patriotism new or old? This past December, my assembly was involved for the very first time with the Wreaths Across America program. It is an easy program to do and participating is quite touching and significant to lay a wreath at the headstone of a veteran especially if it is also a Brother Knight or family member. Our members present handed out prayer cards to the volunteers, a Knight or Catholic or not, and it added meaning as they placed the wreath and said a few words over the site culminating with a salute to the veteran for their service. This is a simple program and one that can be significant by providing Sir Knights visibility and interaction in their community. This year the new Veterans Hospital is to open and they always are looking for volunteers to assist veterans. Assemblies or individuals who have some time to spend assisting those men and women who have served our country, it is a small price to pay to thank our veterans. Two individuals intimately involved with the veteran s hospital and the VAVS program are: John Alfeld= johna70@ cpines.net and George Jackson= gljacks@msn.com. Let s reach out and contact these Sir Knights to volunteer our time. I want to remind my Brother Sir Knights, that before we know it, the State Convention will be upon us. This is a time to renew old friendships while making new and exchange ideas of the successes and failures in our councils and assemblies over the past year. Hopefully we become energized to do the work of our Order emphasizing our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Next our biennial meeting will be held this year in April. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21, The location will be Council 2160 s hall in Greeley, th Ave. There will be a review of what transpired since the last meeting in 2016, discussion of old business, new business and any resolutions that may be presented. It will be the time to submit the names for Master of the District for the new term beginning September 1, In the coming weeks a letter will go out with the pertinent information and request of the names of your Assembly s delegates. Each assembly s Faithful Navigator is a delegate with each assembly entitled to one additional delegate for each 100 members or major fraction thereof. Finally, we have scheduled 4th degree exemplifications each month from March through June. Check the listing in our Knights Call as to the contact person, time, and location for each of these Patriotic degrees. Let us move forward and have a banner rest of the year for the 4th Degree, our state and the Order. Vivat Jesus, Vivat Maria Roger G Muller Roger Muller, PSD District Master

IMMEDIATE PAST STATE DEPUTY Brothers, We have a busy degree schedule the next 5 months of the fraternal year with Major Degrees, No Frills, Stand Alones and Fourth Degrees so that everyone will be able to advance to the higher degrees. Contact your 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree members and encourage them to sign up for their next step in the wonderful Knights of Columbus Journey. But, there is one area where we are falling behind and we need your help! We have many Spanish speaking 1st degree members who need to advance in their degrees, but no one to help give the Formation (2nd) and Knighthood (3rd) degrees in Spanish. These men deserve the opportunity to go through the degrees thoroughly understanding the message because every word is important. If you or some brother Knight you know is fluent in both English and Spanish and interested in helping with the degree work, please contact me at jimcaf@comcast.net or so we can put Spanish speaking degree teams together. Ceremonials are extremely important in the life of a Knight so please consider helping your fellow brothers. 4 2018 COLORADO STATE CONVENTION Online Registration is now open. If you know you are coming to the convention, I highly encourage you to register as soon as possible. All registration forms are available online by clicking the State Convention link on the State website homepage ( The 2018 Colorado Knights of Columbus State Convention will be held from 26 to 29 April 2018 at the Hyatt Regency-DTC, 7800 East Tufts Avenue, Denver CO This hotel is the same one where we held our 2017 Organization & Mid-Year Meetings. Their guest rooms offer breathtaking views of Downtown Denver and the Rocky Mountains. The rooms all feature upscale beds and bedding along with spacious sitting areas. The facility is compact making it extremely easy to get from rooms to meetings, meals, and Masses. I ask all Grand Knights to put Delegate selection on their February meeting agendas, then submit them timely using the online Delegate Registration form. This will help avoid any last minute issues that may arise. Encourage your delegates to complete their convention registration timely also. District Deputies - please reinforce this at your District meetings. Through our State District Deputy Coordinator (Jake Jakubowski), we will be sending weekly updates to your District Deputy to allow him to help with any registration needs. The State Convention is an exciting and fun time for all brother Knights. The 2018 convention is shaping up to be better than ever. Your participation is what makes this annual event a success. Support the priests across the state by attending the Clergy Appreciation Dinner. Share the joy and enrichment of bringing your family to the State Banquet. Child care & dinner is available for this event on Friday evening. Remember this is your convention. Join in making 2018 the best year ever!! See You in April at the Hyatt Regency-DTC. Craig Martin 2018 State Convention Coordinator co.kofc.convention@gmail.com (719) FAMILY Brothers, As we enter the new year, we often start by reflecting on the past year and setting new goals.. Some may want to lose weight, others to be better with money, but how many of us attempt to set a new spiritual goal for the year? At our recent Tri-District meeting, a question was raised that really resonated with me: How comfortable are you in leading in devotionals or prayers in your family? The answer to that question may present an opportunity for growth in your own Domestic Church. As an example, in my family we pray our nighttime prayers with the kids, followed by the Guardian Angel prayer and then the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. The latter two were added as certain members of the family expressed a particular devotion or need. Hopefully you can find an opportunity to add some new way to let Christ live more in the midst of your family life. Vivat Jesus, Josh Dalcher State Family Director dalcher@gmail.com

KNIGHTS TO CHRIST February 12- Abram Lincoln s Birthday PATRIOTISM is a national restoration If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14 We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious Hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly self-sufficiently imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness. ~ Abraham Lincoln What might God say if he appeared to our nation s leader tonight as He did to Solomon (2Chronicles7:12)? What is our Assembly planning this Fraternal Year in service to God and country? Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed by no better than we deserve. ~George Bernard Shaw To order Knights to Christ books, visit: now on Amazon.com for Kindle PERPETUAL MEMORIAL SOCIETY Colorado Knights of Columbus Perpetual Memorial Society is a wonderful way to honor our loved ones, Living and Deceased, with this thoughtful act of enrolling them in 100 Memorial Masses per year, each and every year, forever. 8 Knights of Columbus Family of the Month Council Winner List DECEMBER 2017 Council Family Of 4732 Miguel Rico Surpreme Families of the Month Council Family Of 1062 Jim Yankovich Patrick Walters Romuald Barteczka STATE KNIGHT OF THE MONTH The December 2017 Colorado State Knight of the Month is Brother Knight Michael Reilly of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Council No , Littleton, CO. As in December of 2016, Michael chaired the Giving Tree Program this month, spending many hours organizing, promoting, and executing the event. Due to his efforts and the generosity of our parishioners and members of KofC Council #13205, we were able to help five families of the parish with at least 30 children with gifts and monetary support totaling over $1500! In addition, he collected and purchased donations for the Marisol House of Hope (Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver) totaling over $500, delivered in time for Christmas. This included delivering proceeds from our November Family Breakfast to the designated families. Michael set up a Christmas Tree in the Parish Hall, adorned with candy canes containing tags naming items from the families wish lists, which were solicited anonymously. Published wish lists from Marisol House were also posted. An article was published in the Council s Newsletter and the Parish Bulletin for four weeks, while donations were accepted. Afterwards, Michael collected, organized, wrapped, and distributed gifts, supplementing them with gift cards and additional items purchased with proceeds from our November Parish Family Breakfast. Michael and his wife Ann Marie live in Thornton with their four school age children. Their oldest daughter Maureen is now Sister Mary Judith, in her third year of discernment/formation in Nashville with the St Cecelia Congregation of Dominicans, and daughter Megan is a college student at the University of Mary in Bismarck. He has been a parishioner at OLMC for five years and a member of Council for almost as long. Michael also serves as our Financial Secretary and Culture of Life Director.

Knights in olorado Action NOTE To be included in Knights in Action, send your council newsletters to: Kevin Caffrey The Durango, Colorado Knights of Columbus Council #1408 were approached this Fall to assist a parish family in preparing their recently purchased home for the upcoming winter. The husband had recently dealt with a heart condition and his wife was confined to a wheelchair. The home would require a great deal of patchwork and remodeling to be ready for a Colorado winter. A total of a dozen Knights responded to the call and made three different trips to the home site twenty miles from Durango. They insulated to keep heat in, build walls for showers, and redid a bathroom. A number of outside leaks were closed and the roof was also patched. Knights contributed over 150 man-hours to fulfil our goal of being Catholic men of faith and men of charitable action. Fred Fleming, member of Council and Assembly 2294, is a member of the Assembly Honor Guard and Knights Choir. He is a long time member of the Denver Broncos staff and a former player for the Calgary Stampeders, where he met Pat Bowlen and started working for his dad. His story begins when he was let out on the streets as an early teenager. He is a fervent Catholic and a favorite in the Broncos locker room. He was a boy who started with nothing and ending up as Peyton Manning s personal security guy. Let s all congratulate Fred on all of his accomplishments! The Pro-Life March in Denver took place on January 13, What a great way to start off 2018! Council

On January 20th, the assembly gathered for the annual after Christmas party and gift exchange at Orleans Hall at St. Joan of Arc church. The group numbered 80 with 6 councils represented. It is heartwarming to see so many knights coming together to break bread and share the joy of being a part of this great organization. Council
