CATHOLIC CITIZEN / CATHOLIC LEADER With only a few days left before the election, we need to examine our Catholic conscience and make educated votes for the candidates and/or platforms that support true Catholic teachings that allow us to practice our faith in public without fear of being ostracized. Religious freedom is an essential Right of this country that must be protected. We have all heard about and seen the rapid encroachment of secularism in our society that continues to make it uncomfortable for us to live our faith in public. We must guard against this whenever possible and the best way to do this is at the ballot box. Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila recently stated the following concerning the election. So my advice to Catholics in voting in this presidential election is to first look at who forms you and your conscience. Is it your personal encounter with Jesus Christ and the Church, the voice of God which cannot contradict the truth or revelation, or is it the ideology of some political party? Secondly, look at how you have been a leaven in society. How have you sought the common good and the values of the Gospel, especially by serving the poor, the needy, the unborn and the dying? If you truly live your Catholic faith, you will not find complete alignment with any political party, and that is okay. Thirdly, look at how each party platform supports human life from conception through natural death, the freedom of religion and the freedom of conscience, the family, and the poor. Finally, do vote, as every Catholic has an obligation to participate in the political process. So as the Archbishop stated, and as Catholic gentleman and Brother Knights we need to be leaders in our communities when it comes to standing up for life issues, religious freedom and helping those in need. It is what is meant when our Order is referred to as the STRONG RIGHT ARM OF THE CHURCH ; we are a Band of Brothers who are the protectors of the faith for our families and for the future of our country. Be vigilant, stay firm in the faith, be brave and strong. ~ 1 Corinthians 16:13 VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE It is your obligation as a Catholic American Citizen. Also, join us at the State Capitol on November 5th at 10:00 am for the rally and Rosary in support of all life issues and religious freedom. Vivat Jesus Jim Caffrey James D. 2 State Secretary Odds and Ends Create a clean heart in me, O God and renew in me a steadfast spirit. (Psalm 51) This month will bring to a close the extraordinary Jubilee year of Mercy initiated by Pope Francis last December. Not only has it been an eventful year for the Catholic faithful, but hopefully for us as knights individually and collectively. We ve encountered many historic milestones this year, chief among them was the canonization of St. Mother Theresa in September. St. Mother Theresa was, and is, a great apostle of love and mercy and an exceptional model for us, especially as Knights of Columbus. Hopefully, during this year of mercy, we ve made a deliberate effort to be more charitable and merciful to our neighbor within our councils and our parishes. As this year of Mercy comes to a close, our challenge as Catholic families and Knights is to continue to be apostles of charity and mercy in our daily lives in the model of St. Mother Theresa and our beloved founder Father McGivney, and like them, to move forward with a clean heart and a renewed steadfast spirit. Let our renewed spirt motivate us to continue to implement meaningful charitable programs and motivate us to offer the gift of membership to catholic men and their families. Cindy and I wish you and your families a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving. STATE DIRECTORY : The State Directory is now available on the state council web site Printed copies of the directory (one per council) will be distributed through the district deputies. COUNCIL/DISTRICT TRAINING: We encourage your districts/councils host a training session. The process is simple, just give me a call or shoot me an with a couple of dates/times you d like to host the training. The training covers the history/legacy of our order, programs and membership ideas and the duties and responsibilities of council officers and directors; but can be adapted to meet specific council/district needs. The greatest value of the training is the questions and shared ideas of our officers and members. The training would be of value to all council members, not just officers and directors CCYMHSIC and Vivat Jesus, Jay Doherty Jay Doherty Colorado State Secretary Essay Contest The Importance of Religious Freedom By now everyone should have their Essay contest kits ordered and be gearing up for the local competitions. A good rule of thumb would be to begin your competitions by the first or second week of November. This gives the youth plenty of time to work on their essays. You should then plan to have your local judging no later than the second week in January allowing plenty of time for a District competition if needed. (Please let your District Deputy know that you plan to hold a Council wide competition.) Once your Council contest has completed and all essays have been judged, you will need to submit only your 1st place winners to your District Deputy for the District competition. If a District competition is not needed, then the next competition will be at the State level. Again, only the 1st place essays will need to be delivered no later than midnight Monday, April 3rd, The following options are available: 1 - They may be dropped off during the State Free Throw competition on March 4, 2017 at Mullen High School (time TBD and communicated later) 2 - Submitted electronically (via ): If sent electronically, they should be in a word.doc format or scanned. 3 - Sent via U.S. Mail - post marked no later than April 3rd, 2017 ( me for mailing address) Please remember to include the official cover sheet with your entries. I also need the contact information of the submitting Council including the Council number and name, the Grand Knight and the Essay Chairman s name, mailing address and an address or phone number. If you have any questions, please let me know via dd22sditch@gmail.com Vivat Jesus Scott Ditch Scott Ditch Colorado State Essay Chairman

3 DM Roger and Margaret Muller Master s Knightly News This first month as District Master has been busy. Trying to familiarize myself with the tasks associated with the position while evaluating and identifying needs and concerns then attending meetings is at times intimidating. As busy as I was in the State chairs, there is a lot more manpower resources available to handle day to day operations that are not in place at the 4th degree level. I experienced my first exemplification and I want to thank my Administrative team for all their hard work as they put together the registration process and associate paperwork. The Jim Brom 4th Degree Team was, as usual, at its best and exemplified the principle of patriotism in very dignified and professional manner. The marshals in attendance, led by Lead Marshall Gerry Dreher, were able to maneuver the candidates and present the flag ceremony with dignity and pride. October 7 through the 9, I was attended the Provincial meeting in Phoenix, Arizona with our State Deputy. Together with the District Masters and State Deputies from Arizona, New Mexico and Utah along with other Sir Knights from around Arizona, we listened and learned from our Vice Supreme Master, Michael Kingman, our agenda and goals for the fraternal year. Also present were three Former District Masters from Arizona and our Former Supreme Master, Larry Costanza. Our charge, as the 4th Degree, is to stand firm and support our Order, our Country, our Faith and the Legacy of Knighthood. To be successful and achieve our end goals, we must have active and thriving assemblies working in conjunction with councils and promote both membership and programs. Our members must insure they know how to recruit, employ the use of membership committees, communicate with Grand Knights and members by attending council and assembly meetings to institute major programs or activities. Look to adopt a military family for the holidays as an activity. Activities involving participation in a Veterans Day parade, working with local VA s assisting veterans, promoting flag programs, sponsoring public safety appreciation dinners, participation in the Military Scholarship Fund for seminarians are a few activities assemblies can do. I would encourage Faithful Navigators to review the criteria and actively pursue attainment of being a Star Assembly. This relatively new program started last year, mirrors that of the Star Council award. The criterion involves completing paperwork but an active assembly in membership and programs can be successful. Active means vibrant assemblies. If assemblies and councils work hand in hand on recruitment and programs, the Order will grow, our State will grow, our councils and assemblies will grow. Growth will only enhance the ability for families to grow in our faith while leading a good Christian life in the teachings of our faith. Finally, the old 4th Degree website is now defunct. The 4th Degree web information is now part of our State website. The tab is in place but the site itself is still under construction. Sir Knight Harry O Brien will be keeping the page current. It will contain the Master s monthly letter along with important 4th degree dates and information received from Supreme and the Vice Supreme Master. It will have Marshal information and any notable information from assemblies. Please bear with us as we get the page started and current. For 2017, we have scheduled 4th Degree Exemplifications February through June. The exemplifications will be held in Northglenn in February, Greeley in March, Arvada in April, Colorado Springs in May and Littleton in June. Let us help grow our Order, State and District this year and for the years to come. Be active, be vibrant. Respectfully submitted Roger Muller Roger Muller, PSD ColoradoDistrict Master Substance Abuse Poster Contest 2016 The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest is open to all young people between the ages of 8 and 14. Entries can be in either the Alcohol Awareness and Abuse competition or the Drug Awareness and Abuse competition. Each poster must include a slogan reflecting either of the topics and an original visual image. Posters may only be entered under one topic. Councils should order the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest kits, which contain all the materials needed to participate in the contest, by calling the Department of Fraternal Services at (203) The kits should be ordered in December and the Council should be ready to present the contest in January. Posters should be completed by the end of January, and the council judging should take place in February. District, Regional and State judging will follow. Winning entries at the state level will be submitted to the Supreme Council where they will be entered in the international competition with winners from contests in other jurisdictions. Each Council is encouraged to participate in this worthwhile youth event. Columbian Squires circles should work with their sponsoring councils in conducting contests. Councils can reach out to the children of Brother Knights as well as local parochial and public school teachers and administrators. Larry Herold Larry Herold Substance Abuse Poster Chairman

4 Council Activities Brothers As I get older I find that I greet November with mixed feelings. I do not like the colder weather, but I do like the fact that November is a time for family activities like Thanksgiving and allows us time to anticipate and reflect on the upcoming joyous Advent and Christmas seasons, also a great time for family activities. Your Councils should strive to have many family related activities, and what better opportunity than at this time of the year. Most Councils have probably ended their participation in the Intellectually Disabled drive; hopefully you were successful in involving as many Council members and their families as possible. I would encourage all Councils to have their members invite their families, including wives, children, and grand children, to participate in the future. It is a great opportunity to experience the principle of Charity. Hope fully everyone participated. November is also a time to honor our Veterans, remember those who have served our country, if nothing else ask then to stand up during your meeting and receive recognition from their Brothers. Patriotism may be the lesson of the Fourth Degree but all Knights should be patriots. REMEMBER TO VOTE, and encourage your parish members to vote. For Fourth degree Knights and Assemblies you might want to look up information on the Wreaths Across America project that honors deceased veterans in December prior to Christmas by placing wreaths on their graves. November is also a time to anticipate your year end reports that will be submitted to the State Council. Decide which activities you would like to report on. Think ahead and avoid the last minute rush right after the Holy Days. Also plan on attending the December Mid-Year meeting. I wish everyone a Happy Veterans Day and a very Happy Thanksgiving. I have noticed a slight increase in the number of newsletters received, please insure that I am included on your distribution list. Also now is a good time to update your Council list and insure that all of your members receive the Knights Call as well as the blast s from Supreme. While seeing an increase in the Newsletters. I noticed we have a decrease in the number of submittals for Knight of the Month. Brothers it only takes a few minutes to honor one of your Brothers that contributes to your Council. Remember recognition is the heart of volunteering. Dont forget to attend the Mid year meeting on December 9th 11th. Vivat Jesus Frank Humpherys Frank Humpherys, PGK, PFN, FDD Council Activities Director Community Highlights Have you ever wondered, How can I make my parish community better? Well, the Knights of Columbus have a program called Fathers Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows. Father s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for fathers to celebrate and honor their marriage vows. Annually sponsoring this event on the third Sunday of June will serve to make your council visible to the parish community and show your member s support for all fathers and husbands. During these events, Knights and their wives along with all the married couples of the parish have an opportunity to affirm their commitment to their wedding vows. Remember the 5th commandment of Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue, is, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD, your God is giving you. The Service and action steps are available right now in a separate attachment. Please consider doing this to honor fathers. And please remember this counts as a fulfillment of one of the requirements of the Building the Domestic Church program. And it is so easy to accomplish!! Vivat Jesus George Stragand George Stragand, PGK, FDD Community Director Prayer in the Square All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. We are faced with multiple attacks upon our church. Knights have taken an oath to support our Faith, our Parishes, our Priests, those in need or unable to protect themselves. The Knights change lives and save lives. We are being called upon to do that now. Proposition 106 is a direct attack on our beliefs as Catholics and a poorly written ambiguous law. All three Colorado Bishops have come out strongly against this as have both the State Deputy and the Supreme Knight. We invite all Knights and there families to join us in prayer. November the 5th on the west steps of the State Capitol at 10:00am. Newly ordained Auxiliary Bishop Jorge Rodriguez will lead a bilingual rosary and Devine Mercy Chaplet. This is our chance to lead our family s and our Parishes as we have sworn to do. Mass is at 9:00am at the Basiclla with an 8:15 show time for 4th Degree. 5 Family Programs Have you started your Family Fully Alive - Building the Domestic Church program? In a time when marriage is under attack with same sex marriages. When respect for life is under attack with mandated contraception in Obama Care and a proposal on the State Ballot to approve Physician Assisted Suicide. When society places value on material wealth and power and we are so distracted with activities, work, children s events/sports Now is the time to celebrate the gift of our faith, to realize the value of the family in our society, and to make time for prayer and to grow in our faith. Building the Domestic Church The Family Fully Alive is an initiative by Supreme to stress the importance of Family in the New Evangelization of the faith. The Second Vatican Council teaches that each man, woman and child is called to holiness through proclaiming the Gospel and communicating the divine gift of love through the activities of their daily lives. This means living our lives as an example of God s love in the world. But living our lives as God s example is not easy and requires effort, prayer, and loving support from your family. The program outlined in the booklet Building the Domestic Church A Family Fully Alive (Supply Catalog item 10162) provides the structure to do just that. The program can be adopted to fit the needs of the family using all or parts of the program outline. We also encourage this to be used at Council meetings and events and whenever people gather as Family to add an element of prayer and faith sharing. We are all being challenged by the program to place God at the center of our lives, to grow in faith and prayer, to show ourselves as examples of God s love in this world. It is through the family that we will strengthen our society building back the foundation that makes this nation great. So work as a family work as a council work as a parish to recognized, appreciate, encourage, and promote faithful family life. Because through that people will be brought to a deeper appreciation of our faith. I have also seen a falling off of the number of councils submitting your family of the month forms each month to recognize those families within your council. It is easy to complete and the form each month. The form can be found at this URL: Upon completion of the on-line form it can be saved as a PDF on your computer and ed to: Supreme fraternalservices@kofc.org State Family Director: iluvtheavs@gmail.com Your District Deputy: please contact your DD for their address Vivat Jesus Jesse Taitano Jesse Taitano State Family Director COLORADO Family OF THE MONTH September, 2016 Mike and Jessica Landers and their four wonderful children are an exemplary Catholic family that inspires faith and hope. Mike and Jessica met when they were serving as campus missionaries for the Fellowship Of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), and they support FOCUS missionaries today. Jessica is a former Catholic school teacher, she is a leader with Mothers Uplifting Mothers Spiritually (MUMS), and she is becoming a lector. Mike is an active Knight, helping with homeless outreach, our breakfasts, our golf tournament, and Mass ushering. Mike and Jessica are both active in right to life activities, and they were RCIA sponsors for a married couple last year. The four children are very polite and engaging, and Rebekah, age 6, is already active in the children s choir and the Little Flowers Girls Club. Congratulations on being September s Family of the Month. COLORADO KNIGHT OF THE MONTH September, 2016 September Knight of the Month for Sir Knight Dan Knievel who is a 4th degree Knight in John the Baptist, Council No in Longmont, CO. In conversation with his GK, I have been made aware that at some point Dan was also the Knight of the Year. Sir Knight Dan Knievel is a veteran Knight (55 years!) who serves our parish and council in too many ways to count. He serves as a Mass coordinator, a member of the parish Respect Life council, a lector, a sacristan, a homeless outreach volunteer, a food bank volunteer, a consistent volunteer at our breakfasts, our tent sale chairman, and our golf classic chairman. He is also our Financial Secretary, and he is undoubtedly one of the finest gentlemen who I have ever had the privilege to know. Dan and his lovely wife Beth have been married for 51 years, and they often serve the parish together. We wish you a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!

Most councils take pictures of the events we host or programs we put on. Then we put them in our newsletters, that our brother Knights read. Let s take those photos and post them on the Colorado State Knights of Columbus facebook page where men who are not Knights might see it and notice what we do and want to join. Together we can spread the word of the great works we as Knights do in our Parish and communities. Let s work together and publicize ourselves to others. By doing this your council can create buzz and help recruit new members for your council. Let s grow or order by showing what we do and what we stand for. With Veterans Day and the Christmas season coming there are many examples of events that we can publicize to help your council. No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people, in the experience of fraternal love. Did not Jesus say: By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (Jn 13:35)? The St. John Vianney Seminary is a traditional Seminary, Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Denver, however, is one of 51 Redemptoris Mater Seminaries around the world. These Seminaries are dedicated to the New Evangelization and are associated with the Neocathechumenal Way, which stress Adult Faith formation through Small Faith Communities. The Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Denver is truly International; Seminarians come from fifteen to twenty countries during any given year. These Seminarians, once ordained, will report to the Archbishop of Denver or the Bishops of Pueblo or Dallas. Redemptoris Mater Seminarians take the standard seven year course of formation with the Saint John Vianney Seminary Students. In addition each Redemptoris Mater Seminarian spends two or three years on Mission. Finally each if the seminarian is associated with a Colorado Parish that has Neocathechemunal groups within the parish. Most of these young men truly leave their homes and families behind when they come to study at Redemptoris Mater. Often when they show up, all of their worldly possessions are packed in one suitcase. Currently we have Twenty-One Unsupported Seminarians in the State of Colorado. We have fifteen in Denver Diocese, to Include Capuchins, Colorado Springs has Four, Pueblo has Two. You can go to futurepriest.com, click on Unsupported. If your council decides to support, please let me know as soon as possible, so that I can update web site. Finally, much of the conversation that we have is around financial support of Vocations, since the holiday season is rapidly approaching, this would be a good time to reach out to the seminarian that you support and invite them to a Council Function. I know that a number of Councils invite their Seminarians, and their families, to Council Christmas Parties and take this opportunity to introduce them to Council members and Families. This is especially appreciated by the Seminarians at Redemptoris Mater since they are from all over the world so having a chance to Celebrate Christmas in family atmosphere helps to ease the loneliness of being away from their families. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all Councils, Assembly s, Squire Circles, Ladies Auxiliary s in supporting our religious family in the State of Colorado. 15 Kni g h t s of Co l u m b u s PO Box Littleton, CO Return Service Requested Knights to Christ Spiritual Enrichment Initiative November 8 Whatever you did for one of the least of these followers of mine, you did it for me! ~ Matthew 25:40 An editorial began: A priest we know recently described his experience of being confronted by a beggar while eating at a fast- food restaurant. The beggar said he was hungry, and the priest, intimidated and nervous, could only say, I m sorry, and look the other way. Later, as the priest recounted the story, he was praying Psalm 80, Lord, let me see your face, when the image of the beggar came to mind. How many times have you seen the LORD and not recognized him? Christ simply appears before us: hungry, cold and ill. Once He was a condemned prisoner, led to the slaughter for the sins of others. Now he approaches us in McDonalds s smelling badly do we see His face? ~ Our Sunday Visitor What keeps us from seeing Jesus face in the people around us? 16 Working together with your pastor, provide the opportunity for married couples to recall and affirm their wedding vows together with a special blessing during or after the Sunday liturgy. In the Support Materials section we provide two suggested programs you might consider ACTION STEPS When planning the event, be sure to: Ask your pastor s permission to conduct the event, and discuss what time the Masses will be held. If possible, multiple ceremonies should be planned, with a renewal ceremony held at each and every Sunday Mass offered at the parish that weekend. Promote the event several weeks before it occurs. Prepare flyers for distribution at Masses and council meetings. Be sure to post the details on council and parish bulletin websites, as well as on social media. Discuss with your pastor how your council might offer catechesis to the parish on the Catholic understanding of marriage and the strength of the sacramental bond. If possible, arrange a lecture series to take place several weeks before the renewal ceremony. Make a pulpit announcement on the day of event just before Mass begins. Be sure to specifically invite all married couples not simply Knights of Columbus members and their wives to participate. Plan a reception to follow the event. Some councils may wish to hold a brunch or supply simple light refreshments, while others may wish to supply wedding cake in honor of the ceremony. Congratulate each couple and thank them for their witness. Affirmation of Wedding Vows Father s Day is an important time to celebrate and promote the role of fatherhood within the Christian family. Fathers, by their word and example, pass on the faith and reflect the image of God the Father within their homes. Christian marriages reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church and have the Holy Family as their primary model. As devoted Catholics, members of the Knights of Columbus nourish, support and strengthen Catholic family life through parish-based programs and charitable works. Today, our parish s Knights of Columbus council invites each couple present to affirm their wedding vows. We hope that by doing so you and your spouse will again experience the grace received on your wedding day, when you gave witness to the union of Christ and the Church. We pray that your marriage continues to be strengthened through the example of the Holy Family and the love that comes from Christ. Celebrating our Catholic Marriages and Families AFFIRMATION OF WEDDING VOWS During or immediately following the liturgy all couples will be invited to affirm their wedding vows in a simple and solemn ceremony. The celebrant will invite couples to stand together in their pews or to gather at an appropriate place in front of the sanctuary.

17 V / Dear brothers and sisters, on your wedding day you joined your lives in an unbreakable bond through the Sacrament of Matrimony. I invite you now to join your right hands as we pray together for God s continued grace and blessing upon your marriage. Prayer to the Holy Family Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer. Amen. Prayer composed by Pope Francis and off ered on the feast of the Holy Family, Dec. 29, V / Lord God and Creator, we bless and praise your name. In the beginning you made man and woman, so that they might enter a communion of life and love. You likewise blessed the union of these married couples, so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church. Look withkindness on them today. Amid the joys and struggles of their life you have preserved the union between them. Renew their marriage covenant. Increase your love in them and strengthen their bond of peace, so that surrounded by their children they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R / Amen. BLESSING OF MARRIED COUPLES V / Husbands and wives, please bow your heads for the blessing. May God the eternal Father keep you of one heart in love for one another that the peace of Christ may dwell in you and abide always in your home. R / Amen. V / May you be blessed in your children, have solace in your friends and enjoytrue peace with everyone. R / Amen. V / May you be witnesses in the world to God s charity, so that the afflicted and needy who have known your kindness may one day receive you thankfully into the eternal dwelling of God. R / Amen. V / And may almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. R / Amen. Blessing adapted from the Roman Missal, Third Edition. Prayers modified from the Prayer of Blessing of a Married Couple, Book of Blessings (1989).
