The Christmas season didn t end on December 25th, it continues until January 9, 2017 on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord and we need to be mindful of all the celebrations that have occurred since Christmas day and all that we will celebrate until January 9th. We celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family on December 30th and we need to look to the Holy Family as a model for us all. That is why I chose the Holy Family as part of my logo. As husbands and fathers we need to emulate our own lives after the Holy Family. We need to be faithful to God and steadfast in support of our families. The Knights of Columbus encourage these traits by helping us be more spiritual and family centered. With the New Year upon us, we generally make resolutions to try and make ourselves better in one way or another. We usually say we are going to lose some weight or exercise more or be a better person in general. How about we make a resolution this year to live our Faith more fully by becoming more involved in the charitable works of the Order and spending more prayerful time with our family, brother Knights and those in need. Remember that the family that Prays Together - Stays Together and this goes for both our immediate family and our council family. There are many members of our council and parish communities that are struggling with their faith journey and it is up to us to help them. We can all help our councils become more faith filled by bringing more of a spiritual component to them. We have the luxury of having our own daily mediation book based on the principles of the Order called Knights to Christ. This book can be used in a multitude of ways beginning with (1) the individual Knight doing the daily reading in the morning to set the tone for the day, (2) the council using it to open and close the meeting and reading it as part of The Good of the Order., (3) encouraging several members to utilize it in small prayer groups and (4) using the format to hold one day retreats for your members and other men in the parish. All these activities will help your members and councils focus on the mission of the Order to be better Catholic men, husbands and fathers. When you accomplish this, you will also be evangelizing to others. Another way to help your council be even more connected to our Catholic Faith is by getting your Chaplains and Deacons more involved in what you are doing. Communication with your Chaplain (Pastor) is key to your members growing in their faith. I routinely see councils having little or no communication or input from their Chaplain. How can your Chaplain find out how to help your council and its members grow in the faith if you don t speak with him on a regular basis and how can your council know what your Pastor / Chaplain needs from your council by the same token. Our unwritten mission is to support our Bishops and Priests in their needs and to help Build the Domestic Church - While Strengthening our Parishes. In order to accomplish this mission we need to be in regular contact with our Chaplains and Deacons. Invite the Deacons of your parish to become active members of the council. They can have a great role as Spiritual Advisors during the meeting when your Chaplain is unavailable. He can also be a conduit to service programs in your community because that is their function at the parish they are assigned to. He can also be a liaison between the council and the Pastor. All these suggestions will help your council and Brother Knights become more engaged in our wonderful Faith. Contact your Chaplains and Deacons today to start a new Faith journey and partnership for Also with the New Year arriving, it means that we have only six months left in the fraternal year to reach our goals. We need to focus on offering every Catholic man in your parish the opportunity to join this wonderful Order. Don t keep this great experience to yourself, offer it to all Catholic men who are in the pew next to you so they too can make a difference. Remember, No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; Instead, it is put on a lamp stand, Where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, show the good works of the Order so others will want to join and serve God. Let s make it a great year by continuing the great mission of the Order in service to God. Vivat Jesus Jim Caffrey James D. Jim Caffrey Colorado State Deputy FOR THE GLORY OF GOD VUNITED IN FAITH, FAMILY, & SER ICE

2 State Secretary Odds and Ends Charity is patient, charity is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Charity does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Cor 13:4-7). Happy and Blessed New Year! Hard to believe another year has come and gone and with God s grace we ve entered another. Many of us begin the New Year by reflecting on the old year and resolving to do things a bit differently. We resolve to lose a few extra pounds, to quit smoking, to be more patient, to exercise more, to pray more. For many of us, our New Year s resolutions quickly fade away; overcome by the stresses of our day-to-day lives, particularly job and family commitments. This year I resolve to be a better Knight of Columbus. It dawned on me that by committing to being a better Knight; by committing myself better to the principles of our Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism (especially Charity) that I will be a better Catholic, a better husband, a better father, a better leader and a better citizen. Through Father McGivney s vision and foresight, we have before us each and every day, month and year the roadmap to becoming the best we can be. By dedicating ourselves to the principles of our Order, especially the principle of charity as outlined in St Paul s letter to the Corinthians, we will be more patient and kind, less jealous, boastful, and angry; we ll think less evil and be more loving, hopeful and perseverant. It is Father McGivney s hope and prayer for each of us individually and all of us collectively to live our Order s principles more fully. It is the legacy he left to us. January 2017 Per Capita: The per capita assessments were mailed to each council financial secretary in early January. To those that have already sent payment, thank you. 3 DM Roger and Margaret Muller Master s Knightly News Hopefully you got through the holidays and enjoyed time with family and friends while celebrating the birth of Jesus. Our State mid-year was completed and now we can move forward for the last half of the fraternal year. The mid-year meeting saw our new 4th degree web page come up and is running. So far it is basic but it contains a lot of information. You have access to information on the laws and rules of the 4th degree, Color Guard Drill Manual, protocol, etc. The 4th degree exemplifications that are coming up with their contact information have also been added. Also added is the information on our Jim Brom 4th Degree Exemplification Team. Later there will be information with regard to Marshals and the 4th Degree Master s Administrative Team and the power point of our breakout session from the mid-year meeting will be added. I would encourage feedback from my Brother Sir Knights as to what we can do better or what we can add to make your jobs easier. On December 1st, the State Deputy and I had the privilege of attending the 4th Degree and Council meetings for the Leadville Assembly 92 and Council 681. We presented awards to both for the work they accomplished during the past fraternal year. Leadville Assembly 92 was the only assembly in the John H. Reddin Province to attain the Star Assembly award. This involves approximately 150 assemblies covering 4 states, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. What a great tribute to the work done by this assembly that included submitting the paperwork on time. I am hoping that their example of hard work will be passed on to other assemblies in our District and they too will reach Star Assembly. With Sir Knight John Alfeld having stepped up to head the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program, he has had another Sir Knight step up to assist him, Sir Knight George Jackson. Both these men are looking to recruit more men from both assemblies and councils to step up and support this program throughout the state. Any Sir Knight who may be interested should contact either of these men who would welcome your support and assistance. Their information will appear on our 4th degree web page. In our breakout session and wrap up, I spoke of having each of our assemblies identify a person who would be responsible as a contact person for membership, basically a membership director for the Assembly. This contact person could also be utilized as the contact person for exemplifications where an assembly has candidates to be exemplified. This serves a twofold purpose. One, assemblies can coordinate membership drives in conjunction with councils so that there is a 4th degree presence at any membership drive in councils and assemblies and two, one person is the point of contact for new applicants. In the coming months, I will be providing an open letter to assemblies to provide me with the person identified as their membership director. I would again remind all assemblies and councils, Supreme has extended the deadline of receiving funds for the Military Chaplain Seminarian program. Remember, even small donations of $25 would raise an additional $5000 from Colorado. Remember this fund is to help us aid our service men and women by making available to them a priest for their spiritual needs while serving our country. Checks should be mailed to the State Charities Secretary, Claude Trujillo and noting that it is for the Chaplain Seminarian Fund. Finally, I am working to help our district become more effective and efficient as a whole and am striving to have councils better utilized in Assemblies or on their own as an Assembly. It is my intention to visit with councils and assemblies who have an opportunity to better serve their parish and church community as Brother Knights and Sir Knights. Nobody says that success comes easy. We have to work for it and that includes seeking improvement which in veritably includes, at times, some change. Respectfully submitted Roger Muller Roger Muller, PSD ColoradoDistrict Master Council 681 receives Star Council Award Assembly 92 recieves Star Assembly Award Happy New Year!

4 Council Activities Brothers, I sincerely hope that you and yours had a Blessed Christmas. Happy New Year 2017! This is an exciting time in our history as we welcome a new President, and potentially new members of the Supreme Court that might be more Pro Life than in the past, we shall see what the future holds. The begining of a new calendar year is a very exciting event. It is a time of reflection on the prior year s activities and optimism for the coming year s activities. It seems that each year we are optimistic that the New Year will be better than the past year. I would like to thank those Councils that sent representatives to the Mid Year meetings in December, those Councils will have a definite advantage in submitting their activity reports to the state. Some of the information covered pertained to preparing activity reports for In past years it was very evident based upon submitted reports which Councils had attended the Mid Year meeting, because of the format and content of those reports. In reviewing your various Council activities for the past year, please evaluate those programs and their success in order to determine which activities will be repeated, or which new activities your Council might pursue in 2017, or what changes if any should be made to that particular program. One of the most important year end or year beginning activities is preparing and submitting your Survey of Fraternal Activities (#1728) report. These reports are totaled up by Supreme for the entire organization to justify our tax exempt status and to calculate the totals for the entire order of donations and volunteer hours worked. Every year we receive Knight of the Year nominations from Councils where the nominee had not been submitted for Knight of the Month during the year. The main requirement for Knight of the Year is that the Brother had to have been submitted for Knight of the Month at least once during the prior year. If there was no submission then your entry will be rejected. I have noted that during 2016 there were fewer K of M entries than in past years. Please take the time to insure that I am being sent your Council newsletters. Please insure that your Council is familiar with the current Building the Domestic Church programs as outlined by the Supreme Council, and how they will effect your SP-7 this year. Have a great 2017! Vivat Jesus Frank Humpherys Frank Humpherys, PGK, PFN, FDD Council Activities Director Community Highlights Have you ever wondered, How can I make my community better and definitely healthier? Well, donating blood is one of the easiest ways to volunteer and give back to your community and hosting a blood drive might just be the most lasting community activity your council could do. The first step, as with all parish based events, is to contact your Pastor and get his endorsement. Once the drive has been approved, announcements from the pulpit and a pre-registration list should be generated. Then you will need to contact your local blood bank to set a day. If you are not sure of a blood bank near you, that will come to your parish, the American Red Cross can be contacted a 800 RED CROSS ( ) or Bonfils Blood Center at Once your first blood drive is completed, both the American Red Cross and Bonfils will keep a list of donors and contact them for future blood drives. So thereafter, all your council needs to do is make the announcement, roll up their sleeves and sleep well at night knowing they helped save lives. Because it sure feels good to be part of helping to save lives. John 3:17 states, If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him. We all possess blood and there should be little or no hesitation about donating a portion. John 13:34 further sates: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Jesus of Nazareth Vivat Jesus George Stragand George Stragand, PGK, FDD Community Director COLORADO Family OF THE MONTH November, 2016 Congratulations to Brother Robert C. Luckner,Jr. and his family of Council for being named as the Colorado State Family of the Month for November. Bob has spearheaded the Thanksgiving Baskets for the Poor for the last 4 years and this year he made his biggest contribution yet. He and his family organized the effort to raise over $20,000 which was spent to build and distribute 520 Thanksgiving dinners for the poor and needy in our community. This project saw over 200 parishioners come together to volunteer time as well as funds toward this event. They spent almost every Sunday fund raising and were selfless with thier time. For his outstandin efforts and the support of his family we are proud to award sthe Luckners the Family of the Month.

5 Family Programs Is your Council participating in the Building the Domestic Church A Family Full Alive Program? This counts towards 1 of your 4 required programs for Star Council From A Family Full Alive January The Christian family needs to put first things first by cultivating a relationship with God together through prayer. Prayer is essential for families to develop Christian joy, faith, hope and love. Meditation From Pope John Paul II s Familiaris Consortio Family prayer has its own characteristic qualities. It is prayer offered in common, husband and wife together, parents and children together. Communion in prayer is both a consequence of and a requirement for the communion bestowed by the sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony. The words with which the Lord Jesus promises His presence can be applied to the members of the Christian family in a special way: Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Family prayer has for its very own object family life itself, which in all its varying circumstances is seen as a call from God and lived as a filial response to His call. Joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments, births and birthday celebrations, wedding anniversaries of the parents, departures, separations and homecomings, important and far-reaching decisions, the death of those who are dear, etc. all of these mark God s loving intervention in the family s history. They should be seen as suitable moments for thanksgiving, for petition, for trusting abandonment of the family into the hands of their common Father in heaven. The dignity and responsibility of the Christian family as the domestic Church can be achieved only with God s unceasing aid, which will surely be granted if it is humbly and trustingly petitioned in prayer. 1. Is prayer at the center of our family life? If not, why? 2. How can we better build a rhythm of prayer into our family s life? In what way can we mark significant family moments throughout the year with prayer? 3. What are our family members preferred ways of praying vocal, meditative or contemplative? Is there a way to incorporate each family member s preferred way of praying into family prayer? Scripture Reading - Psalm 65:6-14 A prayer of gratitude for God s blessings You answer us with awesome deeds of justice, O God our savior, The hope of all the ends of the earth and of those far off across the sea. You are robed in power, you set up the mountains by your might. You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples. Distant peoples stand in awe of your marvels; the places of morning and evening you make resound with joy. You visit the earth and water it, make it abundantly fertile. God s stream is filled with water; you supply their grain. Thus do you prepare it: you drench its plowed furrows, and level its ridges. With showers you keep it soft, blessing its young sprouts. You adorn the year with your bounty; your paths drip with fruitful rain. The meadows of the wilderness also drip; the hills are robed with joy. The pastures are clothed with flocks, the valleys blanketed with grain; they cheer and sing for joy. Family Project The Catechism recommends that we find places favorable for prayer. One of the places it suggests is a prayer corner in the home. If you do not already have one, make a prayer corner in the home in order to facilitate prayer. This sacred space could be a simple table with a nice cloth over it, a Bible, religious images and statues, rosaries, candles, prayer cards, a family prayer intention book, a vase for flowers, etc. Make the corner unique to your family and have each family member contribute one religious item to the prayer corner. When we remember our soldiers missing in action we say You are not forgotten. With the Solidarity Cross we are telling the persecuted Christians of the Middle East, you maybe persecuted, but you re not forgotten. As ISIS tears down the crosses atop Christian churches, we want to raise this cross in the home of every Knight and every other Christian we can find. And this cross is more than a symbol, because proceeds from the sale of these crosses go directly to the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund. This fund provides food, medicine and shelter for Christian refugees. They are living in shipping containers, trailers and overcrowded rented houses. Jobs are scare and pay is low In June of 2014, approximately 120,000 Christians fled the towns and villages of Nineveh Plain and Mosul, taking refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan rather than convert to Islam at gunpoint. Four dioceses disappeared overnight. For the first time in nearly 2,000 years, no Mass has been offered in Mosul. The refugees live in shipping containers, trailers and overcrowded rented houses. Jobs are scare and pay is low. Even if ISIS is defeated, there is enormous work yet to be done. For example churches have been vandalized, desecrated, pillaged, burned and some blown to pieces. Homes and infrastructure have been destroyed. And under the Iraqi Constitution, Christians are second-class citizens. Brothers, let s step up in solidarity with the persecuted Christians of the Middle East by purchasing and selling, at your councils and in every creative way you can think of, the Solidarity Crosses. See on how to order, sell and remit the proceeds. Let s send a real life and tangible message to our Christian brothers and sisters in the Middle East that they may be persecuted, but never forgotten. It also calls for financial support during their years of Seminary training or religious formation. RSVP assistance also involves prayer and moral support. Has your Council taken action Steps to define how the relationship will be managed? Consider the following: Make at least one personal visit to each Seminarian; send four letters, Birthday, Christmas, Easter and welcome back to school greetings each Fraternal Year. Invite a Seminarian or Postulant to all council activities and include him in your mailing of newsletter or other communications. Invite your Seminarian or Postulant to make a presentation to the Council, parish and/or parish youth groups on what it means to prepare for priesthood or religious life. Council 4732 Had 73 people show up for their Annual Christmas Party and Santa even arrived. Council District 35 and parishioners of Our Lady of the Plains visiting the Saint Mother Cabrini s Shrine on November 13. Circle 1042 The Columbian Squires prepare to participate in the Annual Brighton Parade of Lights. Council Knights and Ladies assisted at Empty Bowls as part of our volunteering to help others. Knights provided parking assistance for all those attending and the Ladies provided a clean bowl for the diners to fill up with many different soups. Council 4699 Supplies us with a little laughter: A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible - Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter. Little Ricky was excited about the task - but he just couldn t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation. Ricky was very nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, The Lord is my Shepherd, and that s all I need to know.

14 Kni g h t s of Co l u m b u s PO Box Littleton, CO Return Service Requested Knights to Christ Spiritual Enrichment Initiative JANUARY 17 FRATERNITY is few words but many deeds God will reward each of us according to what we have done Jan Giles and his wife Miep were members of the Dutch underground. They achieved fame through 14 year old Ann Frank s Diary. It described in moving detail what it was like for the Frank family and four other Jews to be hiding in a warehouse from the Nazis. After two years, the Franks were caught. During that period, Jan risked his life daily, smuggling ration coupons to buy and then smuggling the food to the Franks and the four others in hiding. Someone said of Giles, Jan was not a person to stand in the limelight He was. Throughout his life a man of few words, but many deeds ~Mark Link, S.J. What are your feelings about publishing the good works of your council? The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here ~Abraham Lincoln Join the movement today! Visit to Christ.org.
