BROTHERS - GUARD AGAINST APATHY One of the most common complaints I receive in my travels to councils around the state is that the Grand Knight can t get brother Knights involved in the numerous projects and charities the council is involved in. As Knights of Columbus it is our moral obligation to put the effort forth to make a difference in the lives of the needy, helpless or homeless in our communities. We all join the Order for different reasons, but the common underlying motivation is that we feel the need and obligation to help those less fortunate than us as we are live our Catholic faith. Council Officers need to communicate effectively with their members when laying out their vision and plan for the year. This is done by making sure there is personal contact with their members. Calling a member and asking him personally for his help with a project goes a long way in getting his help. Relying on s and newsletters alone will not get the job done. People receive dozens of s a day and routinely disregard them in the interest of time. When you talk with a Brother Knight and explain how his help is essential to the success of a program he will be more likely to assist. He then realizes his time, talent and effort is truly appreciated. We all know that when you just rely on the help of the Brothers who show up at the meeting, you will run out of help quickly due to burnout. Reach out to the brothers who are either unable to make a meeting or are just uninterested in going to meetings. They are your hidden talent pool that generally goes untapped because there is no real effort made to reach out to them. These are also the brothers that are eventually lost from the council because they feel unconnected to the group. Ask your Chaplain to write a note to the membership asking for their help on a specific parish project. When they see that the Chaplain / Pastor requires their help for the project s success, they will be motivated. We as Brother Knights also need to guard against apathy on our part. We all need to re-examine ourselves and say, how can I help the council and in turn help those less fortunate than me. We need to live our faith more fully and the Knights of Columbus provide the tools and programs to help us accomplish that mission. With the Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish program, the Order has provided a pathway for us to lead our families into a more spiritual life while demonstrating to them what it means to help those in need in our parish and communities. It also demonstrates to others how a Catholic gentleman should engage in the pressing issues and needs of our time. We need to visibly demonstrate in both our public and private lives what the Lord has instructed us to do. Don t sit on the sidelines and be apathetic or indifferent to the needs of society and to the Evil One who is waging war against us. Stand Up and be a force to be reckoned with by using your Catholic faith as a shield and your good works as your sword. Then you will truly be a KNIGHT in shining armor. STAND UP, VOLUNTEER, DEFEND THE FAITH, AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE Vivat Jesus Jim Caffrey James D. Jim Caffrey Colorado State Deputy FOR THE GLORY OF GOD VUNITED IN FAITH, FAMILY, & SER ICE

2 State Secretary Odds and Ends Be merciful like the Father means following Jesus on the path of service. (Pope Francis) In the exchange between Jesus and Peter, which happens three times, Jesus asks Peter the same question and provides a clear calling to Peter and the apostles. It is thought that Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him to atone for the three times that Peter denied him before the crucifixion. Perhaps that is true. Another reflection that I heard recently, and one that we should be able to relate to as Catholic Christians and in a particular way as knights, is that Jesus was calling Peter and the disciples back to Him in the aftermath of His death and resurrection. He is calling Peter to a life of service to His Church and to all of humanity. In askthis extraordinary Jubilee Year of mercy is quickly coming to an end. As he has done throughout most of his pontificate, Pope Francis reminds us that to be merciful like our Heavenly Father means following Jesus on the path of service to others. This is innate and intuitive to us as Knights of Columbus. Our Worthy Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, in his state of the Order address at the 134th Supreme Convention underscored this mission of the knights of Columbus as he stressed the theme: A Light to all Nations. Through our programs, support and presence in our parishes we provide light to those less fortunate, we provide light to families that may be experiencing stress and struggles and we provide light to those on the peripheries of society that are looking for God s mercy and love. As fraternal leaders in our Order, let s continue to develop and grow programs that best serve our parishes and communities. More importantly, let us, as our Supreme Knight said at this year s Supreme convention, bring new men into the order and provide them the opportunity to become better Catholics and multiply the good works we can do. STATE DIRECTORY : My team and I are finalizing the state directory. We hope to have it published to the state website by mid-september JULY 2016 PER CAPITA ASSESSMENTS: For the many councils that have already sent in your July 2016 per capita, thank you. If your council has not yet paid the current and past per capita assessments, we respectfully request your payment of those assessments as soon as possible. COUNCIL/DISTRICT TRAINING: We encourage that your districts/councils host a training session. The process is simple, just give me a call or shoot me an with a couple of dates/times you d like to host the training. The training covers the history/legacy of our order, programs and membership ideas and the duties and responsibilities of council officers and directors; but can be adapted to meet specific council/district needs. The greatest value of the training is the questions and shared ideas of our officers and members. The training would be of value to all council members, not just officers and directors. CCYMHSIC and Vivat Jesus, Jay Doherty Jay Doherty Colorado State Secretary 4th Degree Ramblings Sir Knights and my Brother Knights, I want to thank all of the Sir Knights and Brother Knights in the State of Colorado for your support, help and encouragement that you have given me the past two years as I have had the privilege and pleasure to serve you as the District Master of the Colorado District of the 4th Degree. I ask your support for the new District Master, Roger Muller. There are 6 Exemplifications set for the 201/2017 Fraternal Year: Sunday September 18th, Denver. This will be a morning Exemplification! Sunday May 21st, Colorado Springs at St. Patrick s. Saturday June 24th, Littleton. The special Priest/Deacon Exemplification will be held in Denver in January The location and exact date is still to be determined. There are some important changes that are being made over the next couple of months. The 4th Degree website, www. coloradofourth.org will be closed due cost and lack of use. The 4th Degree will have a page on the Colorado KofC website, so you will be able to find all of the information about the 4th Degree starting in about a month or so. We are excited to announce online registration for 4th Degree Exemplification Candidates will be available starting for the September 18th Exemplification. We are looking at several options for on-line payment plans and have a tentative roll-out of on-line payment for the February 25th, 2017 Exemplification. This will be similar to what the 3rd Degree uses for the State meetings. We have a number of items to work through before it is implemented. If you have any comments about the on-line pay system, please feel free to send them to Master or to the Marshal for your district. Patriotism is serving one s country as we are called to serve by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Vivat Jesus! Thank you and may God abundantly bless you and your families! 4 Council Activities Brothers As I have mentioned in past years, I have mixed feelings about September. It marks the end of Summer (my favorite season) and the beginning of Autumn. It is a time of harvest, and of Fall Knights activities. The end of September marks the end of the first quarter of the fraternal year and should be a time to assess your progress to meeting your Council s goals With the emphasis on Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Parish this year it is time to review the following programs and to incorporate them into your activity schedule if you have not already done so. Journey to the Inn Fathers Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Consecration of the Holy Family Family Fully Alive Devotional Program Food for Families Keep Christ in Christmas Spiritual Formation Groups 5th Sunday Rosary Family Week Celebrations I know that many Councils already participate in many or most of these activities, if your Council does, please add them to your schedule. Newsletters: Unfortunately I have seen a drop off in the number of newsletters being received. Please insure that I am included in your newsletter distribution list, shumpherys@aol.com. If you would like to know if your Council has been receiving credit for your newsletter, please feel free to send me an inquiry and I will let you know. You might also want to insure that your Council list is up to date and that you have provided a copy to the State Council so that your members receive the Knights Call as well as various State notices. Enjoy the balance of your Summer. Vivat Jesus Frank Humpherys Frank Humpherys, PGK, PFN, FDD Council Activities Director Community Highlights Have you ever wondered, How can I make my global community better? Given all the persecution of Christians throughout the world and especially in the Middle East, the Knights of Columbus have organized the Solidarity Cross Program. The need for such a program arose from the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson expressing the need to help the Christians at numerous conventions, through his speeches to Congress, his speeches to the UN and his disbelief that any government agency will do very little to help. In the latest issues of Columbia, the plight of these Christians is addressed time and time again. The Bishop of Syria tells of Christians fleeing their homes and having to leave their dead lying on the ground with no chance to bury them. The Solidarity Cross program allows us Knights, safe and secure, in this land we love, an opportunity to financially contribute to the persecuted Christians financially while getting our councils, parishes and our community involved in the process. Please peruse the flyer in this issue of Knights Call for all the details. Basically, fill out the form, enclose $5.00 for each cross ordered, sell the crosses within your council, parish and community for at least $10.00 and then forward the proceeds to Knights of Columbus Charities, who will forward the monies to Christian Refugee Relief Fund. And please remember the Christian community can be viewed biblically. The Bible s original word for church is ekklesia, Greek for assembly or gathering. This word took on the theological meaning of all Christians. Acts 2:42-47 reveals that the original Christian community was known primarily for its devotion to Christ s teachings and its love for one another. Viewed this way, the Christian community is simply those who love Jesus and live in fellowship with each other. When the world sees this in action, they will see the true love of Jesus and perhaps find themselves attracted to Christ, too. Vivat Jesus George Stragand George Stragand, PGK, FDD Community Director COLORADO KNIGHT OF THE MONTH July, 2016 Father Ken Koelher is our Worthy Chaplain and an ardent supporter of the Knights. In late June, he hosted a dinner for the Knights specifically for brainstorming new events that would begin in August and later. He cooked the food for the Knights himself, and cultivated great discussion that resulted in the seeds for at least four new programs that we have not yet attempted at our parish. Beyond this, Father Ken helps us to understand what he feels the parish needs from the Knights so we can best orient our work towards our local community. This is just the most recent of the dozens of reasons that Father Ken is well deserving of the Knight of the Month honor.

5 Family Programs Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2: 1-11) September is the month to start to prepare and promote the Supreme program: Building the Domestic Church The Family Fully Alive. In the pages of the booklet you will find monthly themes, meditations, projects and Scripture verses which help you place God and the faith at the center of your lives. The booklet can be ordered from the supply catalog, item 10162, at no charge to the council (limit 300). An excellent companion to the booklet is the prayer card, A Family Prayer, written by Supreme Chaplin, Archbishop William Lori. This too can be ordered from the supply catalog, item 10086, at the charge of $3.00 per 100 cards. Place your orders and encourage families within your council, in your parishes, and even at your council meetings, to take advantage of this resource and bring our faith more fully alive through building our domestic church. As always I encourage you to submit your family of the month forms each month to recognize those families within your council that do so much to support our order and our parishes and communities. Monthly submissions of the Family of the Month award results in the council earning 10 points for each monthly submission for a potential total of 120 administrative points for the State Programs awards. Go to the Supreme website to complete the on-line PDF form for submission. The form can be found at this URL: Upon completion of the on-line form it can be saved as a PDF on your computer and ed to: Supreme fraternalservices@kofc.org State Family Director: iluvtheavs@gmail.com Your District Deputy: please contact your DD for their address Vivat Jesus Jesse Taitano Jesse Taitano State Family Director Supreme FAMILIES OF THE MONTH June, 2016 THE FAMILies OF stephen & Julie Sweeney Co u n c i l539 De n v e r, CO Timothy & Rosalyn Klasinski Co u n c i l12336 Au r o r a, CO congratulations to these families representing Colorado! They always attend Mass together and both serve as Ministers of the Word and the Holy Eucharist. Brother Jere is the Council Lecturer and Church Director. In his capacity of Church Director he has revitalized the Council monthly Family Mass and Dinner. Our chaplain says Mass followed by a dinner out at a local restaurant with Council members, family and friends. His initiative and imagination have resulted in an average of 20 individuals attending the event which has fostered the growth of fellowship in the Council. He is ably assisted in this effort my Connie whose help has contributed to the overall success of the program. For this effort I am proud to submit the Joiners as the Councils Family of the Month for July 2016.

6 From the Desk of the Ceremonials Director We continue to move forward. Many of you are in contact with me to ensure that your council or district is moving their respective brothers through the degrees as there have been a number of councils who have stepped forward to host a standalone Formation or Knighthood degree or councils may choose to host a combined Formation and Knighthood degree on the same day and make it a little more formal with a mass and banquet. The guidelines continue to be available on the website and I know that a number of the councils utilize this resource. Some have really taken to heart the suggested dress code and have incorporated it in their invitation letter. It is hoped that this will remind Grand Knights, Membership Directors and sponsors to encourage their candidates to respect the ceremonial for what it is and give it the due respect that it deserves. This will be my final article as your ceremonials director for the Knights Call as I have been blessed with another opportunity in being appointed the District Master. So I will still be completing an article each month for the Knights Call, just with a different hat. I would have liked to continue doing ceremonials as they are near and dear to my heart but Supreme does not wish for District Masters to wear more than the hat of the District Master. I would hope that whoever our State Deputy appoints to the position you will provide him the support that you all have graciously given to me during my tenure in this position. I will still be available for your support and anything I can do to assist you with ceremonials I will be available as my schedule will allow so do not hesitate to make that call or send an . I would like also at this time to thank all of you for your prayers during my health issues. Everything turned out well and I am as good as almost new. I appreciate all the kind words, phone calls and s and look forward to serving you in my new capacity as District Master. Thank you for your support. Respectfully submitted Vivat Jesus. 7 Coats for Kids My Brother Knights, Did you know many children throughout the United States and Canada go without a coat each winter? Many lowincome families use their scarce resources to meet the most basic essentials and they need help to provide this vital winter necessity. That s why the Knights of Columbus developed the Coats for Kids program, which allows councils across North America the opportunity to purchase new winter coats for children at a discount and to distribute them to children in need in their local communities. Through our Coats for Kids program, 1,625 local councils distributed 79,320 coats to children in need throughout the United States and Canada in Since the program began in 2009, more than 306,000 coats have been distributed. How It Works Every Knights of Columbus council is eligible to participate in Coats for Kids. Coats can be purchased at a cost of $220 per case of 12 (including shipping) for orders shipped to addresses in the continental United States, and $245 (including shipping) for orders shipped to Canada and other addresses outside the continental United States. Coats should be ordered on Knights Gear. Pope Francis put it in perspective when he said true charity requires courage: let us overcome the fear of getting our hands dirty so as to help those in need. With the help of Knights of Columbus councils, you can use this program to make a difference for children in need. To learn more contact the Fraternal Mission department at (203) or fraternalmission@kofc.org. ACTION STEPS To organize a successful Coats for Kids distribution: 1. Consider appointing a Coats for Kids chairman or assigning the task to the community activities chairman for the council. 2. Contact the state council to learn if there is a state chairman who is responsible for coordinating a statewide coat drive, and determine how your council, assembly or circle can support the drive. 3. Councils hosting their own coat drive should decide on a location and time to host the event. Consider inviting local veterans, athletes, TV personnel, local fire and police department, and parish priest. 4. Make sure that you order enough coats by contacting your local human services agencies, parishes and schools to get a list of children in need of a coat. 5. Order Coats through Knights Gear. For assistance, contact (203) Publicize the event through local media and through the same human services agencies, parishes and schools you are serving. Brothers, please remember that our call is to put a Coat on a Kid. If your Council does not have the financial ability to purchase from Supreme, that s OK!! We want to provide a Coat for a Kid by any means. Talk to your Pastor. Go to your retailers. Have a coat donation drive. Whatever it takes to make our children warm. Anything your Council can do to help this worthy project is appreciated!! The mission of the Angel Beds Project is to provide a way for families who do not have the financial means to afford a burial. The Archdiocese of Denver provides the services for stillbirths and miscarriages once per month and typically multiple burials are done at the same time. This works well. However, there is one glaring need-the casket. Currently, the casket is a container which is similar in appearance to a cooler. (Information copied from the Angel Beds Project Brochure.) 15 NEW SP-7 REQUIREMENTS To achieve Star Council you must act upon the following article. Remember at the Organizational Meeting when we rolled out the new initiative BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH WHILE STRENGTHENING OUR PARISH. Our State Deputy and I both mentioned that this was not an optional program. That is was mandatory. Supreme has now enhanced that mandatory emphasis. You will now need to have 4 of these programs on your SP-7 to qualify for the Columbian Award and have it count towards your Star Council Award. So it is time to regroup your council s planning committee and be sure you have at least four of the following scheduled this year: JOURNEY TO THE INN FATHER S DAY AFFIRMATION OF WEDDING VOWS CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FAMILY FAMILY FULLY ALIVE DEVITIONAL PROGRAM FOOD FOR FAMILIES KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS SPIRITUAL FORMATION GROUPS 5 TH SUNDAY ROSARY FAMILY WEEK CELEBRATIONS You will now need to have 4 of these programs on your SP-7 to qualify for the Columbian Award and have it count towards your Star Council Award. Some of these are new programs in which you may not be aware of in detail or may need assistance in developing them. We understand that. Our state program team is willing to walk you through the steps so you can have successful activities in these areas. Call us and we will get you on the right road to success. Please don t miss out on the opportunity to become a Star Council by not scheduling these activities for your council. You will now need to have 4 of these programs on your SP-7 to qualify for the Columbian Award and have it count towards your Star Council Award.

16 Kni g h t s of Co l u m b u s PO Box Littleton, CO Return Service Requested Knights to Christ Spiritual Enrichment Initiative OUT INTO THE DEEP When the disciples were not catching any fish close to the shore, Jesus instructed them to put out into the deep waters for a catch; but he was really talking about catching men. But going deep may have a different meaning for us Knights. How often do we go deep within ourselves to check where we are with our faith? Many of us may be too busy to take the time. But surely we can spend 10 minutes each morning with our Creator before we start our day. The Knights to Christ Meditation book offers complete instructions for daily meditations found in the book. But, there may be a better way. It s sometimes a challenge to set and follow a daily meditation Routine. We need commitment; and we can get that by establishing a faith-sharing group with other Knights in our councils. Sharing our innermost thoughts based on our Knights to Christ meditations helps go deeper. And our commitment to the group ensures that we will actually do our meditations routinely. Here s how it works: a) Groups of five Knights b) Pick a group leader c) Meet every two weeks at the same location d) 3 Meditations from Knights to Christ (from the readings of the week prior to the meeting) e) Write down a brief meditation summary f) Each Knight shares his meditation with the group g) Limit the meeting to 1 hour h) Spread the word Join the movement today!
