Brother Knights and families, it was great to see and visit with many of you at last month s organizational meeting. Based on the feedback received, the organizational meeting was a tremendous success and many of you left with a renewed level of energy and commitment to our Order. The implementation of the Order s new Faith in Action program model is an acceptance and acknowledgment of our call as missionary disciples and our mission of encounter with those most in need. This message of encounter has been the cornerstone of our Holy Father s pontificate. Pope Francis has said, being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey. He also said, In the poor and outcast we see Christ s face; by living and helping the poor we love and serve Christ. Faith in Action replaces the nearly 50-year old Surge with Service Program. In the opening lines of Evangelli Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), Pope Francis invites Christians everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ. The Faith in Action program model extends that invitation to Knights of Columbus members and their families to live out the calling of their faith, the call to service of their neighbor. While this new program model brings a new structure to what we do as Knights and families, it is not new to the core of who we are. The Holy Father s clarion call to live our faith through the love of Christ, is little different than that of our Venerable Founder Father Michael McGivney. The first month of the fraternal year is now behind us, and while we are excited about the new on-line membership and Faith in Action programs, our July proved that the summer months can still be a bit challenging for many of our councils, especially if we take the summer months off. I am happy to report that 16 councils recruited 37 new Knights and families. My congratulations and personal thank you to those councils for beginning the year strong. I now ask you as district and council fraternal leaders to motivate your districts and councils to also begin the year strong. Build and deliver great programs for your parishes and communities under our new Faith in Action program model and challenge your councils to recruit at least one new member in August and September. Our on-line membership efforts are going well. On 28 July 2018 we initiated our first on-line member into a Colorado council. Remember, the goal of this initiative is to introduce men to the activities of our Order in a way that will strengthen and benefit councils and members and to recruit young men who could form a membership pool for our state. Additionally, we are providing a new way for men to join the Knights of Columbus online. This allows us to capture and convert prospects instantly, without waiting and without excuses of time. When an eligible man is interested in joining the Knights of Columbus he can join that very moment as a first step, not a final step. The Order, our state and now our councils are having great success with this initiative. I ask each council to continue to promote this option to prospective members as an alternative to the traditional prospect card. The thumb drive that you either received at the Organizational meeting, or should have received from your district deputy, has a great deal of information on the on-line membership initiative, including a bulletin announcement I ask each council to run monthly in your parish bulletins. In the weeks and months ahead, we must continue to explore together, not only Faith in Action, but how, we can Attract, Recruit, Involve and Retain Catholic men and their families ensuring they becomes Knights for a lifetime. It is a mission of encounter to offer to other Catholic men the opportunity to grow in faith, grow as families and encounter Christ through service. There is much work to be done and united together we will move our councils, districts and state forward this fraternal year. Your Most Humble Servant in Christ, Jay Doherty Jay Doherty Colorado State Deputy

2 MASTER S KNIGHTLY NEWS To all, I thank you for ending the fraternal year on a positive note as we completed another successful 4th degree exemplification in Littleton at St. Francis Cabrini. Thirty-five new Sir Knights were exemplified including a priest and deacon. Thank you to Padre Pio Assembly 2813 for hosting this event and especially to their Faithful Navigator, Art Hinkel for his efforts. As usual, the Master s Advisory Committee and the Jim Brom 4th Degree Exemplification team were up to the task of processing the paperwork and exemplifying the candidates. Our most recent celebration of patriotism saw many assemblies involved with parades and other significant patriotic themed events for the 4th of July. With the most recent changes in our regalia, many different opinions and thoughts were expressed about our heading in a direction where we are lacking a visual expression of patriotism, i.e. 4th degree pins versus flag pins, new regalia versus old, etc. As I have attended many events over the term as Master, I would note a few observations as to our efforts. First with regard to the uniform, what has not changed is the use of our social and service baldrics. From the onset of your 4th Degree experience in the ante chamber, you are informed about what they represent and how they are worn. The baldric is lined with our national colors and represents our country. In Canada, their baldric is lined with their national colors, Mexico theirs, etc. etc. We actually show our patriotism and allegiance to our country with the wearing of our baldrics. Second, in viewing many flag displays in parades, posting and retrieval of the colors, we need to be more familiar with flag etiquette. In the U.S., our national flag is always the primary flag. When carried in a procession with other flags, should be either on the marching right, that is, the flag s own right, or, if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line. The U.S. flag should never be on the marching left or have any other flags to its right. The U.S. flag should be the highest point of the group when using other flags. An exception is if there are flags of multiple countries, then all country s flags, including the U.S. are at the same height. The American flag is not dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are dipped as a mark of honor. A flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise. We forget we are carrying not just a flag or piece of cloth, but are carrying the national flag that represents the living country and should be considered a living thing, the union being the honor point. If there is ever a question, order a Knights of Columbus United States Flag Manual from Supreme. It outlines the proper handing and displaying of the flag. Showing our patriotic roots, it is important to do so solemnly and respectfully in a manner that shows pride in who we are and what we stand for..patriotism. Our regalia, new or old, should look more than just presentable but a cut above the rest. If items no longer fit, purchase new or forego the Honor Guard. We jokingly say we need our wives around to ensure we are buttoned, snapped and yes, are our chapeaus on backwards. But it really is important. Old or new, many see us and we set the example for all Knights. Be Proud, Look Proud and Live Proud. Vivat Jesus, Vivat Maria Roger G Muller Roger Muller, PSD District Master

3 STATE MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR Dear Brothers, We are only one month in to the Fraternal year, you may think you have plenty of time to achieve our goals, which you do if you start now. If you have not already done so it is time to start planning your church membership drives for October (or any month). Remember that every Council event is a membership recruitment opportunity. We as an order need to increase our membership in order to grow our Fraternal and Charitable programs that support our Communities and our Parish. The new online membership program, initiated by Supreme, is now in full force in Colorado. I am pleased to say that we currently have 12 Brothers in the state that are online members and at least one online member who has already joined Council in Broomfield. The online membership is a tool that can be used to enhance traditional recruitment methods such as church drives. During the pulpit announcement, be sure to mention joining the Knights can be as easy as going to Here is a checklist to help you plan and be successful with your church membership drive: 1. 6 TOUGH GUY MAKES GOOD SIR KNIGHT FRED W. FLEMING When you talk to Fred Fleming, sometimes you don t know if you are talking to a tough guy with street smarts or your new BFF because Fred has a lot of connections people connections. When you re with him, you are the most important person in the room. He loads up his pipeline of stories, jokes, anecdotes and experiences and delivers them eyeball to eyeball. You leave completely drenched in good humor, straight talk and unabashed opinion. Fred was born 79 years ago into a rough and tough military family in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After a tumultuous childhood, he was tossed out of the house. I was 15 years old. I came home after taking a walk to calm down and found the door locked and my belongings piled up in front of the house. He became a survivor on the streets until he started living in a neighbor s basement and found a job as a Swamper in a Coca Cola delivery truck. He was not known as an affable individual on the streets of Toronto. When he turned 18, he became a driver for the delivery truck. Bulked up after 5 years on the delivery truck, he joined the North York Knights in the Jr. Football league and played Nose Tackle. Fred was following his fate which would lead him to the Canadian Oil fields, the Canadian football league, Sports media and the Denver Broncos; not to mention (?) Super Bowls. When asked how it all happened, he said, For every negative, there is a positive. Sometimes you have to really look for it. He recounts how he met Pat Bowlen, owner of the Denver Broncos. We both used the same running track to jog every day. I had no idea who he was. Pat had the habit of taking the outside, running past everyone, brushing up against them- pushing them off stride, including me. One day my survivor instinct kicked in and I elbowed him, sending him crashing into the boards and to the ground. Everyone ran by him without saying a word. A few weeks later Pat recommended me for a job with his dad s company, Fleetway Trucking. I became Manager and eventually ran the company. Pat Bowlen and I became friends and remain so to this day. When Pat Bowlen bought the Denver Broncos in 1983, Fred Fleming went south to become the Assistant to John Beake, the General Manager. The Bowlen s wanted someone in that position they knew was honest and a straight- shooter. Fred immediately became the go to guy for everything they didn t have someone else to do. I ve done just about everything you can imagine. At first, even unto today, he is part of the advance team for road games, sometimes taking the lead. He is normally the first guy to meet the rookies, draft picks and free agents, since he picks them up at DIA. Of course, by the time they reach Dove Valley, they are in stitches from his stories, but he connects with them immediately and gets to know them. Ostensibly, his favorite job was providing Security for John Elway and Peyton Manning. Peyton hated it when autograph-seekers double- dipped, especially if they stepped in front of a kid. They didn t get away with it when was I was there! But if you listen carefully, Fred s very favorite duty is acting as the Broncos Emissary, when he delivers requested memorabilia to critically injured or sick children and terminally ill adults. I was privileged to travel to Pueblo, Colorado, to give an autographed Bronco football to a father dying with Cancer. When we arrived, the word went out to the neighborhood, The Broncos are here! Family and neighbors crowded into the little house. Fred connected with them and spent an hour regaling the group with Bronco stories and anecdotes. He then walked over to the sick gentleman, made a brief presentation and handed him the prized football. There wasn t a dry eye in the room. According to his family, this was the best day of this father s short remaining life. We are in the people business, said Fred, a true Denver Bronco. In 1962, Fred married Adeline, of Ukrainian descent, in Lamont, Alberta Canada. They had three boys and one girl. One son, Chris, died of a heart attack playing hockey in Alberta. He was 32 years old. I had to tell my wife that he had died after I found her praying the Rosary at church, Fred recalls. There is no easy way to break such terrible bad news, but to just say it. The Fleming kids all live in Calgary, Canada. Together, they have given Fred and Adeline 6 grandchildren.

7 Fred becomes a Knight In 1998, Knights of Columbus Council hit the Motherload when Fred joined the Brotherhood. At this time in my life, it s the best thing that could happen to me! At the time, the Knights worked the smoky Bingo halls, raising money for charity. Fred soon fixed that unhealthy problem by providing bronco tickets to five games that could be raffled off. It s estimated that approximately $200,000 has ben raised for Council charities over the past ten years! Soon after becoming a Knight, Fred joined the 4th Degree, the highest Degree of the Order. He followed suit by becoming a member of the Knight s Honor Guard, serving at important ceremonial functions, including funeral services for deceased Knights. Finally, he joined the Knights men s choir, which sings at Mass once a month as well as other functions sponsored by the State Knights of Columbus. From the streets of Toronto, where he met life on life s terms and won, to a happily married man, father, grandfather, Bronco insider and good friend to so many, Sir Knight, Fred Fleming is a great example of how to win in the game of life, no matter what the odds! Also, he has served the assembly as Scribe, Color Corps Commander, Navigator and two terms as Admiral. He has always taken an active part in council functions to include our monthly breakfasts and Lenten fish fries. He has become a Games Manager and team Leader for his councils Bingo games. He has filled in to help out wherever and whenever he can, for example he has helped council 7502 on their major degree, helped several times with Erie s pig roast and Mass in the park. He helped the Ft. Lupton council at their parish festival and stepped in for Art Samson while he was recouping. He also helps in community like the local Help for Homes projects. On two occasions he hosted the movie about Medugorje called Apparition Hill. He, along with Bob McLaren, set up a Knights pilgrimage, for the Knights to Christ. He, at his own expense, has given out many copies of the Knights to Christ booklet to: a priest from North Korea, brother Knights in Germany and at the Supreme Conventions to members from Canada, Guam, Japan, Poland and the Philippines. On pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes and Medugorje he has also given away copies of the book. Further, his drive is to help bring newer brother knights along by mentoring them through their formation to full Knighthood. He goes out of this way to take first, second, third and even fourth degree candidates to exemplifications.

12 Crossroads Ministry Fourth of July Breakfast 2018 Estes Park Council # Knights; 7*3 = 21 14*7 = prep TOTAL of 139 hours What better way to start a holiday in the middle of summer then to help those who are less fortunate by cooking and serving breakfast? The Crossroads Ministry s Fourth of July Breakfast is an annual event among the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Mountains Church and Crossroads Ministry in Estes Park. Crossroads Ministry began as a Food Pantry in Today beside the food pantry, they offer a wide variety of normal and emergency services such as rent/housing assistance, utility assistance, and help with medical expenses, transportation, and other basic human needs. This is Crossroads Ministry s big fund raising event of the year and they charged $8 for adult and $5 for children. The planning started back in May to reserve the Church and start lining up volunteers to help with the pancake breakfast. The food and supplies was donated by local restaurants in the area and the tables and chairs by the local rental company. The Church provides the location and part of the parking lot. The Knights provide reserved supplies and the man power to cook and serve the meals. Crossroad volunteers help with the decorations, setting up the tables and chairs, the main advertising and providing patriotic background music. The Knights take advantage of this opportunity and setup a table with brochures and information about the organization. The Knights started showing up around 5 am to prepare the beverages and start preparing for the cooking of eggs, pancakes and sausage. By 7 am, all the volunteers lined up to eat breakfast. There were a total of 21 Knights working including the District Deputy and the Insurance Field Agent. The event officially started at 8 am. The Knights were in full force working keeping the serving lines stocked with food, drinks and supplies along with helping customers take food to the tables and cleaning up. Breakfast was served until 10:30 am. This year, Fr. Joseph Cao had a special Fourth of July Mass at 10 am with Deacon George Thierjung. Both joined the breakfast early so that they could get ready for Mass. Even some family members of Fr. Joseph came to visit. It is so important to have the support of the Pastor and have him involved in events like this. The weather was perfect - sunny, warm and a gentle wind. Within two hours after the last breakfast served, the parking lot was cleaned up (tables and chairs removed and returned to the rental company, all the cooking and serving facilities cleaned and put away and all the volunteers went home to spend time with their families to enjoy the rest of the holiday). The official tally was a hair under $5000 raised for the Crossroad Ministries and over 500 meals served (paid and volunteers). The takeaways from the event were the need for Standard Operating Procedures for the coffee and a preparation checklist for the food. Someone turned off the gas on the grill and we had to wait for the official cooks to come in and help us find where the pilot light is located on the grill. Some of the Knights posing together before the serving breakfast.
