Brother Knights and families, As November begins, we celebrate All Saints Day followed a day later by all Souls Day. We typically spend this month remembering those who lived life before us and who are either now in the glory of God s presence in heaven or are in purgatory and in need of the prayers of the Saints and our prayers to achieve the victory of heaven. These feast days serve as an opportunity for us to pray for those members of our families, as well as our Knights of Columbus brothers and their families that have preceded us in departing this life. I ask that during this month of November, each council pray, or better yet sponsor a memorial Mass for our departed brother knights and their family members. Additionally, I ask that you reflect on a knight or knights that have touched your life in a particular way. Father McGivney, our Founder; Father Richard Ryan, former State Chaplain, former 4th Degree District Friar and former State Ladies Auxiliary Chaplain and Past State Deputy Jay Nothstine were such Knights. For me there are many knights who have had an impact on my formation as a catholic man, husband, father and knight, but the one I reflect on most often is my father. My father and I had very different personalities and interests. At times this posed some challenges between us. What we had in common, discovered through our membership in the Knights of Columbus, was a love of Christ and a commitment to service of God and neighbor. I ask that each of us reflect upon those knights who influenced us because they, in their time, were the difference for us and likely for many knights. In almost all cases, we are still knights because of these men. These men are our legacy as an Order. As we reflect on these knights and the reasons they had an impact on us, please ask yourself these questions: what will our legacy be when we are called home? What impact are we having on our brothers today? Are we that knight for one or more of our brothers today? I pray that we are. Please also keep in mind that our deceased brothers are memorialized each day during Mass at St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. What a great benefit. This is one great reason we want to retain our brother knights. Eternal rest grant onto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. As the month of November ends, we will celebrate Thanksgiving and then shortly thereafter enter into the Advent Season. Let s be thankful for all of those who have served before us, leaving us a great legacy of love of God and service to our neighbor. Let s be thankful for our families who enable us and support us in our growth in faith and service as knights. Let s be thankful for the wonderful works that our councils, districts and Order have accomplished and continue to accomplish for the good of all. Let s be thankful for the opportunities that the Knights of Columbus provide us to live our baptismal call to serve as missionary disciples. As we begin Advent and build towards the birth of our Savior let s offer the gift of membership in our Order to another Catholic man and his family. Remember the challenge is simple. Just ask him. Cindy and I wish you and your families a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for this tremendous opportunity you have given us to serve the Knights and families of Colorado. We are thankful for your support, service and the sacrifice you make to serve our many councils, parishes and communities. May God bless you and your families always. Your Most Humble Servant in Christ, Jay Doherty Jay Doherty Colorado State Deputy

2 MESSAGE FROM THE STATE CHAPLAIN My Dear Brothers in Christ, This month s article seems a little self-serving as I write it, and maybe it is, but I hope you will see the larger picture. We, as Knights, support and defend the Catholic Church. We are called to pray for priests and religious and, I suspect, most councils do this at each meeting. But do we do this every day? Do we stop and contemplate how much we need priests? Without the Priest, there is no Mass and without the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass there is no Real Presence of Jesus Christ. This may be worth taking some time to contemplate. I ask this because early in November (5-11 actually) we will again have a vocation awareness week. We will pray in a particular way for continued vocations to the priesthood and religious life. But we must do more. Not only should we pray for new priest but also for the priests now serving and for those who are retired and for those called to their heavenly reward. As we approach Vocation Awareness week, let us take some time to truly consider men that we know who could have a call to the priesthood. Let us take some time to consider women in our lives who could have a call to religious life. And then, let us ASK THEM! Below, I have included two prayers for your consideration. Perhaps, as we approach Vocation Awareness week, we could take some time for payer in a particular way. PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs. We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood. Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith. We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread. We pray to You, O Lord, through Mary the mother of all priests, for Your priests and for ours. Amen. PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Know of my continued prayers for you and for our order. May you always draw closer to Christ through the help of our Blessed Mother. With trust in our Lord, I remain, Your servant in Christ, Fr. John Stearns Colorado State Chaplain

3 MASTER S KNIGHTLY NEWS On the 14th of October, I held a District meeting for Assemblies. With all the activities going on, we had 68 Sir Knights in attendance at 539 s Council Hall in Denver. Those 68 Sir Knights represented 32 Colorado assemblies and one of our attendees was the District Master of Wyoming who happened to be in Denver. I provided my Brother Sir Knights with information I had obtained at the recently held Provincial meeting in Utah. Information was provided on the new uniform, ceremonials, membership and programs. This information provided on a powerpoint will be posted on the 4th Degree webpage. Anyone wanting a copy of the presentation can obtain it from the webpage or contact me. Of course, the hot topic of the day was the new uniform. Since my last memo that is posted on the 4th Degree webpage, there is very little new. The new uniform has been adopted and the transition continues to replace the old regalia. Old regalia is still authorized to be worn until June 30, 2018 at which time the new uniform will be the official uniform of the 4th degree. The most recent information provided was how the new uniform will designate one s position in the 4th degree. A patch will be worn in the color of your position held that matches with the current colors of the cape in the old regalia. The patch is to be worn on the beret directly behind the pin that attaches to the beret. Masters and former Masters, a gold patch is worn, current Marshals, a green patch, current Color Corps Commanders, a purple patch and Faithful Navigators and past Faithful Navigators, a white patch. The rank and file who currently wear a red cape no patch is worn on the beret. I provided instructions on how to obtain the appropriate patch. Individuals should submit an to the Supreme Master s office at suprememaster@kofc.org and include your name, address, membership number and the color of the patch needed. Only the incumbent Marshals and Color Corps Commanders are authorized to wear the green or purple patch. Former Marshals and former Color Corps Commanders would wear either a white patch as a past Faithful Navigator or no patch if they held no other position designated a patch color. Supreme is in the process of revising the Color Corps Drill Manual. Currently we will have to adapt the current drill manual as to processions or other events where we utilize Honor Guards. At first it may be awkward but we should be able to adapt to the situation. Supreme has already made the necessary changes to the Laws and Rules of the 4th Degree. Sections 38 and 39 included in my previous memos and are currently posted on the 4th Degree webpage. These sections involve the new uniform and the dress for exemplifications. With all the discussion at the District meeting, I would like to thank my Brother Sir Knights for providing good discussion and input as to changes that have been implemented. I encourage all members to keep an open mind to this change and remember that Honor Guards are but a small part of what we should be doing as a 4th Degree member. Honor guards and regalia have been and are voluntary. Joining the 4th Degree does not require purchasing regalia or the new uniform. Old regalia was voluntary and the new uniform is voluntary. The 4th Degree makes up approximately 20% of the total membership of the Order or about 350,000 members. In most assemblies about 30% of its membership participate in Honor Guards and is a small part of assembly s activities. I encourage my Brother Sir Knights that instead of reiterating the same old things about the negatives of the new uniform spend that time to develop the program aspect of your assemblies. I believe that being constructive in patriotic programming will derive rewards for your assembly, church, faith, community and yourself to help our Order grow and continue the mission of our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney. I continue to ask you to pray and consider your role as a 4th Degree member. Everything we do is by choice. We volunteer or not. We participate or not. We believe in the principles of our Order or not. And if not, you have probably lost sight of the principles of our Order and founder. We will get through these trying times now and any in the future by prayer and having faith in our Lord that he will see us through. Vivat Jesus, Vivat Maria Roger G Muller Roger Muller, PSD District Master

Let s get excited about ourselves and shout it out to all! We have a facebook page, twitter handle and a instagram account - lot s of ways to spread the word of your Council/Assembly. pictures/videos to clarkslucky13@msn.com FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM Vivat Jesus, Clark Musser Assistant to the State Deputy Communications Brother Knights, 116th Colorado Knights of Columbus State Convention Staffing Needs I have yet to find two brother knights who are willing to on take the 2018 State Convention Program Booklet development. Specifically, I need a knights for each of the tasks below who is willing to be the graphics & assembly editor of the 2018 Colorado K of C State Convention Program Booklet. Further, the State Council has been providing our previous editor Bob Kreger a $400 compensation for his endeavors on the convention program and we would also offer this to brother knight; and, the coordinator with our Colorado Knights of Columbus Councils, Assemblies, Parishes, Insurance Agencies and other Catholic organizations & businesses to solicit advertisement for the 2018 State Convention Program Booklet. To be frank, I do not have the technical skills to be the graphics & assembly editor of the 2018 Colorado K of C State Convention Program Booklet so I am asking for your help to find someone for that role. Please let me know if you have any candidates that I could approach. Thanks, Craig Martin Special Events & State Convention Coordinator (719) co.kofc.convention@gmail.com

5 FAMILY Brothers, What is our mission as we reach out to families in our parish? When I consider that question, I think about the different stages of family life, and what it means. For the young family, one of the greatest challenges is their demanding schedule, and the energy it takes to get the young children anywhere. We may be able to meet them immediately after Mass for some social time, provide games or activities for the children, or provide them some take-home materials from the Family Fully Alive program to shepherd their domestic church at home. For the family with grown children, are we doing all that we can to cultivate a strong faith life as the kids go off to college, start their careers, and begin their own families? We can model that behavior or provide some resources to help them during this transitional time of their life. We can consider apologetics resources from Lighthouse Catholic Media or Ignatius Press that might fit this phase of life. We also need to keep them in prayer as they leave our home and create their own. We can reach out to those families with fallen away members by holding them first in prayer, but later through small faith-based gifts to give them a touch point to remember God in their life. We need to gently tell them we miss them and would like to have them with us in Mass. We can help them overcome spiritual obstacles by identifying them and helping them grow past the objections in search of the truth (in charity, of course). And we can remember Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney as we assist widows and orphans in our parish community. We can remember their departed family members in memorial Masses, through our State Knights of Columbus Perpetual Memorial Society, and on Thursdays in prayer for those in purgatory. We can visit and comfort during these hard times. Brothers, our mission to the family is one of great love and charity. Let s do what we can in our Councils to live this mission. Vivat Jesus, Josh Dalcher State Family Director dalcher@gmail.com PERPETUAL MEMORIAL SOCIETY Colorado Knights of Columbus Perpetual Memorial Society is a wonderful way to honor our loved ones, Living and Deceased, with this thoughtful act of enrolling them in 100 Memorial Masses per year, each and every year, forever. All the information and enrollment form is on the Colorado Knights of Columbus website. If you have any questions Please call Jim Peterson

6 KNIGHTS TO CHRIST NOVEMBER26 UNITY is thanking by living a better life. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. ~Colossians 3:16-17 We need never to forget to say thank you to God, even on the grayest days. Our attitude can be one of humility and gratitude. Saying thank you to God, even on the grayest days. Our attitude can be one of humility and gratitude. Saying thank you to God is a daily practice that is absolutely necessary. If a day is not one of thankfulness, the practice has to be repeated until it becomes so. Gratitude is a necessity for those who seek to live a better life. ~ Father Pat Umberger. Pray that gratitude will bring humility. Pray that humility will bring us to live a better life. In what ways are letting the word of Christ dwell in us richly? Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done. ~J.
