2 Greetings from Pastor Doug Your life is a sermon. The question is, what kind of a sermon will you preach? Dear friends in Christ, whether we like it or not, the words we speak do have a significant impact on others, but not as much impact as the life we choose to live. In Ephesians 5:5-8, the Apostle Paul reminds us, For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness and truth discerning what is pleasing to the Lord. As we enter this fall season, we began with the Rally Sunday celebration emphasizing the need for all of us to invest in the process of life-long faith formation, adults especially teaching, example setting and encouraging children/youth in the ways of the Lord as communicated in Holy Scripture. We are to teach Christian education, but equally important is the hope and desire that children, youth and adults catch the faith, not only be taught the faith. So then it only stands to reason that we ask ourselves, what kind of Christ-like examples do we set? Are we a positive Christian role model in a sin drenched world? Are our words and actions based on integrity, fidelity and a deep love for the Lord? If so, then we are individually and corporately not only blessed by God, but we are a powerful force for God s good in a world that desperately needs Christ-centered positive influences. We live in a dangerous, temptation-filled world. We encounter opportunities to dishonor God every hour of every day. When we walk in the ways of the Lord, not only are our lives transformed, so are those around us. That of course includes children, youth and adults. Bible scholar, Phillips Brooks has advised when he wrote, Be such a man or woman, and live such a life, if every person were such as you, this earth would be God s Paradise. Every early October, we at OSLC focus directly on our need to be faithful stewards of all God has first graciously provided each of us, our time, our talents and our treasures. October 12 th we celebrate Consecration Sunday. One week later, Sunday, October 19 th, we emphasize the need for each of us to be mission minded disciples of Christ. This year our guests speakers will be Jim and Beth Blessman from Blessman Ministries. Whether it is Christian education, stewardship, mission or ministry the same is true for all, our lives are a sermon communicating a strong message of a heart for Christ or a heart for this fallen world. Which will it be? 1 st Timothy 4:12 states, Be an example to others in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. May we each continue to grow in the fear and knowledge of the Lord! Pastor Doug Thank you to everyone who helped with cleaning the stage area in the downstairs social room, for painting, installing the lights and sealing the floor. The stage will soon be used as a youth room, along with a gathering area for Kids Night Out activities! Congratulations to Brent & Sarah (Mathisen) Derby who were married at OSLC on Sept. 20 rd, May God bless you both on a lifetime of happiness together! Congratulations to Eric & Michaela (Lauritsen) Bratt who were married on August 30 th, May God bless you both on a lifetime of happiness together! 2

Consecration Sunday Consecration Sunday is October 12 th. Every year, the second Sunday of October, the faith family of OSLC sets aside a special Sunday to thank God for his daily provision and to publically bring to the altar of our Lord our next year s offering pledge. We do not make this commitment because the church needs to pay its bills, for we know full well that God will take care of our need. Instead, we deliberately set aside a portion of our income so that we can be intentional givers rather than accidental givers. You and I are baptized children of God, saved by His grace, freed to serve Him in daily life and called to a commitment in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. Consecration Sunday is a Stewardship Sunday. Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God, and God s family the church, in managing all of life and life s blessings/resources, for God s purposes. The October newsletter will include a commitment card and additional information to help you prayerfully consider making an offering pledge for the year If you have questions please contact Pam, our office manager, Pastor Doug or any of our stewardship committee members who are Ron Christensen, Dan Jorgensen, Dan Madsen, Dan Smith, Frank Olsen, Nancy Olsen and Nate Vorm. 5 Wellness Tip A monthly feature from the OSLC Wellness Ministry Team Proverbs 17:22 "A cheerful heart is good medicine but a broken spirit saps a person's strength." (New Living Translation) Laughter creates that cheerful heart and leads to better health. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Laughter is good for your health because it : Relaxes the whole body - A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed up to 45 minutes after. Boosts the immune system - Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Triggers the release of endorphins - Endorphins are the body's natural feel good chemicals. They promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. Protects the heart - Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Dissolves distressing emotions - You can't feel anxious, angry or sad when you're laughing. Healthy laughter is a wonderful gift from God. He grants us the ability to laugh out loud at ourselves in the safety of family and friends. His graciousness is demonstrated through us by the peace and presence of the Holy Spirit. Next time you laugh out loud, send up a silent "thank you" to our Father in heaven for this blessing and remember what E.E. Cummings says, "The most wasted day of all days is the one without laughter." Projection System The projection system has been installed. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. We have $2, remaining until paid in full. Many unclaimed items have been left at the church. Kitchen items are marked and on the counter in the downstairs kitchen. Coats and misc. items are marked and on the south wall coat rack. Please check to see if any items belong to you as unclaimed items will be put on the Oct. 4 th garage sale. Quilting is an important ministry at OSLC which reaches out to those in our country and around the world who are in need of a warm blanket. During worship on October 12 th, there will be a special blessing for those involved in the Quilting Ministry and for the quilts they have made. Quilters meet the 2 nd & 4 th Mondays at 1:15 p.m. in the downstairs social room. New helpers are always welcome - you do not need quilting experience - just a desire to help someone in need. Meals on Wheels One of the outreach services OSLC has provided for many years in Audubon is delivering Meals On Wheels. OSLC is responsible for the months of April & October. In the past, our circles have arranged this service but it is getting harder each year for them to fill this need so we are asking for volunteers. It works best if there is a driver and another person to take the meal to the door. They ask that we be at the Memorial building by 10:45 a.m. to pack up and start the route. It usually takes about 1 1/2 hours to deliver the meals. Please help us fill the calendar by offering to reach out to those who depend on this service for a hot meal & a friendly face each day. You can sign up for an entire week or just a couple of days by signing up on the bulletin board or calling the church office. Prayerfully consider helping with this outreach. Thank you Women of the Word 9
