2 Greetings from Pastor Doug, Lent is almost here! It may be hard to believe that the Epiphany season has begun and before we know it Lent will arrive. Wednesday, February 18 th, we begin the 2015 Lenten journey. We are invited and strongly encouraged to gather on Ash Wednesday for worship, which includes the celebration of Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes, as well as the following Wednesday evenings during Lent. This Lenten season we plan to offer a new approach to the five Lenten services that follow Ash Wednesday. We are including a short message from well-known Bible teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan followed by additional teaching from Pastor Doug. It will be another way for us to use the new projection system as part of our mid-week worship experience. The title of the Lenten series is appropriately named, The Path To The Cross. Filmed on site in Israel, you will see and hear Ray Vander Laan weave together the Bible s historical, cultural, religious and geographical contexts, providing insight into Holy Scripture s significance for present day believers. Each complete DVD faith lesson will be available during the Sunday morning S/S hour following the previous Wednesday Lenten service, or you can check it out for your personal viewing from the church office. The 2015 Lenten schedule includes the following: Wednesday, February 18 Ash Wednesday Worship 7pm Wednesday, February 25 Lesson 1 The Way of the Essenes filmed in Qumran 5-6:45pm OSLC Aebleskiver Supper, 7pm Worship Wednesday, March 4 Lesson 2 The Way of John the Baptist filmed in Machaerus 6pm Soup Supper, 7pm Worship Wednesday, March 11 Lesson 3 Into the Desert to Be Tested filmed in En Gedi 6pm Soup Supper, 7pm Worship Wednesday, March 18 Lesson 4 The Last Passover filmed in Jerusalem 6pm Soup Supper, 7pm Worship Wednesday, March 25 Lesson 5 The Fifth Cup: Our Way of Hope filmed at Gethsemane 6pm Soup Supper, 7pm Worship Our Sunday bulletin covers always include the reminder that, Worship Will Never Rise Higher Than Our View of God. Come and worship, grow in the fear and knowledge of the Lord of heaven and earth. The seasons of Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Advent and Christmas all provide wonderful opportunities for you and your family members to draw closer to God, to grow in appreciation of His amazing love and to continue in faith formation. God bless and guide you, Pastor Doug 2

4 CHURCH WEBSITE oslcauduboniowa.org It is updated on a regular basis and is a great source for information on dates and times of worship services, events, activities, Bible studies, etc. Also, OSLC now has facebook, search Our Saviour s Lutheran Church on your facebook account. Check it out!! Current and past monthly Shepherd Staff newsletters are available on the church website. SCOUT SUNDAY On Sunday, February 15 th, we will be celebrating Scout Sunday at OSLC. Our Scouts will be greeting before worship and Scouts, past & present will be recognized during Worship. The following youth from OSLC are involved with the Scouting Program: Cub Scouts: Gavin Steckler, Isaac Jackson, Mason Steckler, Sawyer McClain, Sully McClain & Logan Thygesen. Boys Scouts: Dennis Jackson, Jacob Sauers & Logan Nielsen. Girl Scouts: Chloe Jackson, Morgan Smith, Amalie Lansman I have decided that it is time for me to retire as an organist for Our Saviour s Lutheran Church. I began playing in 1961 for St. John s Lutheran, my home church in Sumner, Iowa. The departing organist showed me the settings she normally used and asked me if I thought I could play next Sunday. I now understand why my mother was nervous. Over the years, I have played for services officiated by over 20 Pastors and shared duties with 9 other organists. Many people have helped along the way to enable me to continue playing. I would like to thank Dan for getting to church early and getting our family ready on Sunday mornings, especially during the years we had two services. One incident that stands out was a Sunday morning that I had left early for the service and he was in charge of getting two granddaughters ready. When they settled in the pew, a parishioner tapped Dan on the shoulder and quietly mentioned she really looks nice in that cute dress, but I think it is on inside out. As I leave the organ bench, I am glad we have capable musicians that will continue to serve. Many congregations are not so fortunate. Thank you all and God bless! Elaine Jorgensen Out of consideration for those who may find it harder to walk during inclement weather, please leave the parking spaces closest to our entrances open for those who need them. Also, please leave the parking spaces to the east of the alley open for our brothers and sisters in Christ at the First Presbyterian Church. Volunteers are needed to run the sanctuary projection system for worship services. The whole service is prepared and ready to go for those who volunteer to run it. It is a relatively easy system to operate. Come to the balcony any Sunday to observe the system and to check it out. Please contact the church office, Jane Weber or Pastor Doug for more information. 4

5 Wellness Tip A monthly feature from the OSLC Wellness Ministry Team Basic Winter Skin Care 1. Use humidifiers to counter the drying effects that heating systems and space heaters can have on your skin. 2. Use mild soap. Avoid scented, antibacterial and deodorant soaps, as they can strip your skin of its natural oil. 3. Take shorter, warm showers and baths, rather then long, hot showers and baths. 4. Gently exfoliate dry skin and apply an oil based (creams, ointments) moisturizer to your skin after bathing. Reapply your moisturizer as needed during the day. 5. Avoid moisturizers that are water based (lotions), scented or have alcohol listed as an ingredient on the container. 6. Wear warm gloves and socks when going outside. Hands and feet are most vulnerable in cold weather and can become dry, cracked, red and painful. Using a Vaseline or petroleum jelly based moisturizer (ointment), may be helpful. Liberally apply the moisturizer to your hands or feet, then cover them with cotton gloves or socks before bed. 7. Continue to use sunscreen on exposed skin during the winter months. 8. Eating food that is high in omega 3 and drinking water can help to restore natural oils to your skin. Inexpensive products can work as well as high end products. Always check the ingredients on the back of the package. Sunday Prayer for LCMC Congregations We have begun offering prayer during worship each Sunday morning for five of the now over 840 different Lutheran faith communities which are included in the association of LCMC churches throughout the world. A one page flyer will be posted on the entryway bulletin board each Sunday listing the five congregations with their addresses, s and congregational statistics. You are invited to partner in prayer on behalf of each of the faith families. If you would like a copy of which five churches we pray for prior to Sunday morning, please contact Pastor Doug. Audubon Ecumenical Lenten Prayer Breakfasts (men & women) Tuesdays at 6:30 a.m. February 24 th Our Saviour s Lutheran Church March 3 rd, March 10 th, March 17 th & March 24 th (locations to be announced) Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve. Contact the church office if you can volunteer for this ministry.
