Okoboji will be at OSLC on February 24 th during worship & Sunday School with more information! Thanksgiving Basket update Thank you for your generous donations in support of providing Thanksgiving Baskets to those in need in our community. As a community, we had $2, donated (OSLC donated $666.00). The Audubon Ministerial Association gifted 35 Thanksgiving Baskets to local families, and donated the remainder of the money to Caring & Sharing, New Opportunities and the Exira Food Pantry. Thank you again for your support! Scout Sunday On February 3 rd, we will celebrate Scout Sunday at Our Saviour s. The following youth from Our Saviour s are involved in the Scouting program and will be greeting before worship on February 3 rd : Boy Scouts Dennis Jackson, Isaac Jackson, Jacob Sauers, Logan Thygesen Girl Scouts Chloe Jackson & Vivian Jackson Thank you! A heartfelt thank you to those who helped with the Christmas Community Dinner by working, providing desserts, making a donation, attending, or remembering the dinner in your prayers. Because of your time and generosity, we were able to share fellowship and a Christmas meal with approximately 255 people from our church and our community. Church Music Sunday Church Music Sunday will be celebrated February 24 th during worship with Behind the Cross Praise Band, Senior Choir, and Kids Choir singing some of their favorite songs. Our guest that Sunday will be Ron Quanbeck, Okoboji Bible Camp Director, who will be sharing a Temple Talk and joining our youth in Sunday School. 1

2 The Power of Five Minutes What is the difference between 5 percent and 70 percent? Only 5 minutes! You can make huge changes in this little bit of time. Maybe not in 5 minutes just one time but definitely in 5 minutes a day. When I arrived at Our Saviour s, I was delighted to see the gymnasium. I have always loved basketball even when it didn t love me back. Back in middle school and early high school, I warmed the bench during basketball games. The coach had us shoot free throws every day, and I did well with that. There was no defender trying to take the ball from me during free throws. After a week or so at Our Saviour s, I walked into the gym and decided I would shoot free throws until I made 10. Shot after shot bounced off the rim or the backboard, or missed both. Eventually I made a free throw. Argh, I thought, how rusty am I? Very rusty! Lots more shots ricocheted off the backboard, the rim and the wall. After a while, a couple shots went in, and I thought, Great! Finally, I m in the groove. Muscle memory is kicking in. But I was wrong. My free throws went everywhere but through the hoop. After several dozen more misses, I was up to 8 made free throws. Curious as to how badly I was shooting, I began to count my attempts. It took me about 40 shots to make the last 2 of my 10 free throws. All told, it took me about 200 attempts to sink 10 shots. That calculates to 5 percent. I thought about walking out of the gym and never going in again. Instead, I go into the gym almost daily, and attempt 25 free throws. It takes 5 minutes. Making 4 of 25 shots meant forward progress. I was excited when I could make 6 of 25. Five minutes a day makes big changes. After a month of shooting, at the end of September, I attempted 100 free throws one day, and I made 54 percent. In October, my best day was 64 percent. In November, I nudged up to 65 percent. In August, I shot only 5 percent. One day in December, I shot 70 percent! The difference between 5 percent and 70 percent is only 5 minutes. If you have relationships that are not working, invest a few minutes a day. If you wish for a higher level of fitness, invest a few minutes a day. Each of us wants to achieve something, and it can look different for each of us. My common recommendation for everyone: Open your heart to God and his Word 5 minutes a day. You can set prayer pauses in your day like the psalm-writer who wrote, Seven times a day I praise you (Psalm 119:164). Pause to thank God when you get up, at breakfast, coffee break, lunch, coffee break, supper, bedtime there you have it, seven times. Jump in with us on reading a chapter a day because 5 minutes will change your life! The Holy Spirit can even shift you from being self-conscious to God-conscious. That is how we feel about all of you. We thank you so much for the prayers and love and financial support you have given this Mission Team. Because of your help YOUR faith in God is being spread through out the world. It is our goal to share the love of Christ. with the people of South Africa as well as those we meet along the way. So you see how much you are a part of this mission. Please keep praying for our work and our safety. In His Service, South Africa Mission Team 2019 South Africa Mission Trip You are invited to pray, along with their prayer partners, for the South Africa Mission Team as they prepare for and embark on their mission trip from January 24 th February 5 th. May God s guidance and protection be with them as they spread the good news of salvation and God s love to the people of South Africa! February Rock News: The Rock Soup-er Bowl and Subs: The Rock is selling soup and subs for everyone to enjoy for Super Bowl Sunday. We will have order forms in the pews and at the back of the church. They are due January 30 th to the church office. We will have your orders ready for pick up after church February 3 rd! The Rock kids that are free will be prepping food February 2 nd at 1:00 p.m. IGNITE youth leadership conference: Where: Grace Church in Des Moines When: March th Cost: $50, the Rock asks you to reserve your spot with a nonrefundable $20 by Feb. 20 th. The Rock will cover the hotel stay and the rest of the conference ticket. We leave after practice Friday night, grab supper, enjoy the conference, then hit the hotel for some sleep. 5 In John 4:1 Jesus tells us Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. Jesus is speaking about our spiritual hearts. We also need to keep our physical heart healthy. One way to do this is to have your cholesterol checked. Your doctor can use your results with other factors to predict your lifetime or 10 year risk for a heart attack or stroke. HDL (good) cholesterol-a high level-above 60 gives some protection against heart disease. Regular exercise, weight loss, and smoking cessation increase HDL levels. LDL (bad) cholesterol-a low level is considered good for heart health. Limit saturated and transfat in your diet as these tend to raise LDL. Triglycerides-This is the chemical form in which most fasts-in foods, as well as in our bodies. Having a low number is good. Total cholesterol score-this is figured by adding your HDL, LDL and 20% of your triglyceride level. Aim for a score of 200 or less. Normal ranges are less important than your overall cardiovascular risk. Talk to your doctor about ways to keep your physical heart healthy. Talking to God helps your spiritual heart (physical one too). 6 Weather Cancellations If worship services, Sunday School, or church activities are cancelled due to bad weather, it will be announced on KSOM 96.5 FM ( or KJAN 1220 AM ( Please use your best judgment for your circumstances regarding attending worship during inclement weather. Worship services will usually only be cancelled if town streets are impassable. If school is cancelled or let out early on a Wednesday due to bad weather, neither Confirmation nor Kids Choir will not be held. If Wednesday early dismissal is cancelled, Kids Choir will be held after school until 4:30 p.m. and Confirmation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Out of consideration for those who may find it harder to walk during inclement weather, please leave the parking spaces closest to our entrances open for those who need them. Also, please leave the parking spaces to the east of the alley open for our brothers and sisters in Christ at the First Presbyterian Church.
