2 Greetings from Pastor Doug Joseph Mohr, a young priest in Mariapfarr, Austria, wrote a poem he called Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! (Silent Night) in In 1817 Mohr came to the St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, Austria as assistant pastor. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr visited his friend Franz Gruber, a schoolmaster and St. Nicholas choir director. Mohr asked Gruber to compose a melody for his poem in time for the Midnight Mass. That night the congregation of St. Nicholas heard the Christmas carol we know as Silent Night for the first time. Mohr and Gruber sang each of the original stanzas to the accompaniment of Mohr s guitar. This coming Christmas Eve we conclude our Candlelight Worship Services by singing Silent Night, Holy Night in a darkened sanctuary while we hold lit candles. It is a touching experience which reminds us of the significance of birth of the baby Jesus, the light of the World, the One who came as a ransom for our sins, the Only Son of God who saves us by grace through faith, the most magnificent gift any of us can or will ever know this side of eternity. I invite you to read, hum, or sing Silent Night, Holy Night throughout the coming days which include the remainder of Thanksgiving, all of Advent and Christmas. It will help you to keep focused on the real reason for Christmas. It will draw you closer to the Lord Jesus as a follower of the One True God during the busyness and distractions of the secular driven upcoming Holidays, or Holy Days? Christmas Blessings, Pastor Doug Silent night, Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing, Alleluia! Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born! Silent night, Holy night! Son of God, love s pure light Radiant beams from your holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at thy birth, Jesus, Lord at thy birth. 2

5 Wellness Tip A monthly feature from the OSLC Wellness Ministry Team Dressing for Winter Weather As cold weather approached, it is important to take precautions to prevent becoming too cold when outdoors. The Mayo Clinic provides these tips for dressing to help prevent hypothermia or frostbite when outdoors. 1. Dress in several layers of loose warm clothing. Air trapped between layers of clothing acts as insulation against the cold. Wear windproof and waterproof outer garments to protect against wind, snow, and rain. 2. Wear a hat or headband that fully covers your ears. 3. Wear mittens rather than gloves. Mittens provide the better protection. Try a thin pair of glove liners made of a wicking material under a pair of heavier gloves or mittens. 4. Wear socks and sock liners that fit well, wick moisture and provide insulation. 5. Wear boots to help keep your feet warm and dry. Just as we prepare physically for the weather, we need to dress for the day spiritually. In 2 Thessalonians 5:8 Paul writes, But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. Stay warm and stay strong with God! December is Caring & Sharing month at OSLC. Items needed are: Kleenex, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Laundry Soap, Dish Soap, Toilet Paper, Spaghetti Noodles, Spaghetti Sauce, Tuna, Canned Fruit, Canned Soup, Peanut Butter, Macaroni & Cheese, Cereal Additional needs are children s clothing for ages 3 and up and casual/work clothes for men. There will be baskets at the church for your donations! Monetary donations are also appreciated, please make checks payable to Caring & Sharing. 5
