1 ZIONEWS Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church November 2018 The Spirit empowers you to work together for the sake of the gospel and our neighbor! When Christians came to America before the United States was founded, they created a way of being church that hadn t existed since the early days of the Church, if ever. A unique gift of America to the Church is the idea of congregations. This idea impacts both the existence of individual congregations and also how congregations relate to each other. This month we ll be looking at how congregations work together right here in Sandusky and Erie County. In addition to our participation in the Northwestern Ohio Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Zion reaches out in many ways to work with other congregations in the area. Here is a sample of some of that work. Zion is a member of Sandusky Area Ministerial Alliance (SAMA). This group is made up of many of the area congregations including the other Lutheran congregations, the Roman Catholic congregations, other protestant congregations, and quite a few from the Baptist and Pentecostal traditions. This group also includes representatives from the city, Firelands Hospital, and the chaplain from Ohio Veterans Home. SAMA supports various projects and activities around the area and provides a central meeting for sharing information and planning. Zion also participates in Care & Share. We collect food and plastic bags, contribute financially through the Zion Foundation, and provide some of the volunteer staff. Housed in First Presbyterian Church and managed by a member from St. John s Lutheran on Scheid Road, Care & Share reaches across many of congregations in the area. And of course, the service provided by Care & Share is indispensable for those in our community in need. Zion participates in the Sandusky Churches Adopt A School Program (SCAASP) through our support for the students, teachers, and staff of Osbourne Elementary. Throughout the year, our members work with people from other congregations and across the community to support our students. Given what month it is, I would be remiss if I didn t mention how Zion works with Holy Angels to provide the Thanksgiving Day Community Meal. This annual event, open to whoever shows up, feeds hundreds of people a meal on Thanksgiving, many of whom would have no other way to recognize the holiday. Months of planning, hundreds of volunteer hours, and significant support from local businesses make a tremendous impact in Sandusky. Of course, we participate in Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission (FLAMe), which provides many opportunities for supporting Erie and Huron Counties. The Giving Garden, Joy Time!, and the LifeTree Café are all regular and ongoing ministries supported through our involvement in FLAMe. In addition, the occasional

2 class or meeting like the Tri-County Sheriffs Meetings that have looked at safety and security in our places of worship were organized by FLAMe. Zion, St. Paul, and St. John s have also had ongoing Shared Ministry conversations about how the three congregations could use our combined resources for the sake of the gospel. These conversations led to the creation of our Shared Youth Ministry Coordinator position and have started a larger conversation among the Lutheran congregations in Erie County about how we might together share the gifts God gives us to make a greater impact in the county. These ongoing parish conversations are not about merging the congregation, but thinking about how we could have a greater impact by working together. The conversation is still in the brainstorming phase, but as we think about what we can do together, it could be something as simple as creating a centralized newsletter to something as big as a county-wide gathering of Lutherans to focus on improving some aspect of our county. Nothing will formally happen without congregational discussion and approval, but please keep the idea of a parish in your prayers as we think about how we can grow into being church for the sake of Erie County. Congregations are a gift of the Holy Spirit that show how diverse the church is and how that diversity provides opportunity for us to work together to reach out to more people with the good news of God in Christ. While we may not always live up to the potential of the idea of congregations, I hope this series has helped you see how returning to the idea of what a congregation can be might open us to what the Spirit is up to here in Zion, in Sandusky, in Erie County, in Ohio, in the U.S., and across the world. As we give thanks for God s gifts this month, remember to give thanks for Zion and all congregations. Peace, PE Nickels and Noses from September In this new section of the newsletter, you will be able to see our attendance and general offering. Please note that these will always be two months behind due to the newsletter publication schedule. Lipp (date of service 9/28/18) Children of Zion Come and join the Children of Zion as we learn about the Battle of Jericho when Joshua, with God s help made the walls tumble down! Each Sunday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. the children gather in the basement and learn together, using a variety of opportunities to reinforce the stories from the Bible we know and love. Through music, art, food, drama even science, we explore the world that God gives us, what this gift includes and why we should care. Following the opening, 6 th through eighth graders convene in room 204 for conversation and study. Parents, grandparents and other interested adults are welcome to join us at any time!

4 Carolyn's Corner Beth Lewis, President and CEO of Augsburg Fortress Publishing tells a story about her first Bible. It was a gift from her grandparents that she received when she was six or seven. It had a black cover and a gold metal zipper with gold cross dangling from it. Its onion skin pages would rip it she wasn t careful. I have one just like Beth s that I received when I was about 8. I treasured that Bible. I proudly and carefully carried it to Sunday School and Catechism classes. But, I didn t want to mess it up after all, it was my most precious gift so I didn t want to open it too often and ruin the pages. It still has a place on the shelf in my study, still in pretty good shape because I treasured it by being very gentle with it and still zipped shut. Contrast that to the Bible I used in seminary with pages falling out, highlighter and ink marks throughout still my favorite Bible! The gift of the Bible being placed in the hands of children is one way parents/grandparents can pass down the faith. However, that little book with the zipper and delicate pages sends an unspoken message to children to be very careful with their Bible. We want children to hear and read the Bible stories from their earliest days. This is why we here at Zion encourage parents to read Bible stories to their children, pray with them and have special rituals from the beginning. This is why we give our youngest children the Spark Story Bible, then as third graders the Spark Bible that is bright orange with a cheery cover. There are coded stickers in the back for the reader to use to mark a variety of things as they read their Bible. And we encourage the reader to underline and make notes in the margins. However, the important message you can share with your children is to let them see and hear you read your Bible. Since children learn from what they observe, this is a great way to model passing on your faith. Blessings, Carolyn Congregational Meeting Sunday, November 4, 2018 following the 10:30 a.m. service. The purpose of this meeting is to elect members to serve on Church Council. We will also celebrate the 120 th Anniversary of the building with the kick-off of the Capital Campaign. Thank you for all the well wishes, cards, calls, s, visits, and support during the past months of my illness. The support I received from the Zion congregation has been very much appreciated. Blessings to all. Joyce Leimbach

7 Suggestions for Observing Veterans Day (November 11) in Worship by Dean McIntyre, Dan Benedict, and Taylor Burton-Edwards In most years and most times, Veterans' Day passes in our churches with little or no mention. Historically and traditionally, Veterans' Day has been more a civic than a sacred observance. As with New Year s Day, Mother's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and others, Veterans' Day is not a part of the liturgical calendar although sometimes local congregations will observe these days in some manner in Sunday congregational worship. History World War I ended on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the Armistice by the Allies and Germany. In the first Armistice Day proclamation in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson called for the nation to remember those who had died in their country s service and to make the day an opportunity for America to "show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation." In 1927 Congress called for the display of the U.S. flag on government buildings, and in 1938 Congress called for the observance of Armistice Day in churches and schools again dedicating the day to the cause of world peace. Note the order here: the nation was telling the churches to celebrate this day. This was not an initiative arising from the churches, but from Congress. The timing was significant. The strong stirrings of World War II had already begun in earnest in Europe. The United States was still reeling from the effects of World War I and the Great Depression, and the political climate overall was against any sort of engagement in wars. Of course, within just three years, the United States became involved in the War "over there" in Europe and "way out there" in the Pacific. Since the end of World War II, observances of Armistice Day have been held all over the nation, but especially in our national cemeteries and monuments and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. The president and many state governors have issued proclamations. Countless communities, veterans groups, and civic clubs and organizations have held local observances. Armistice Day became Veterans' Day by an act of Congress in 1954, changing its purpose and scope. President Eisenhower called on the nation to remember the sacrifices of those who fought in all our nation's wars, to celebrate the contributions of all veterans of military service, and to rededicate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace. It is Eisenhower's call that remains the three-fold purpose of Veterans' Day: remembering those who fought and died, celebrating all veterans, and promoting an enduring peace. From
