2 Page 2 ZIONEWS Carolyn s Corner... Do you have a vision for the future? How do you picture yourself tomorrow? Next week? Next month? Will you be where you are now, or will you be someplace else? We know we can t know exactly what the future holds for us, but, one thing we do know for sure is that if we don t know what we re looking for, we won t recognize it when we see it! It takes a plan... a vision. And, that s the way our ministry here at Zion works. We continue to do ministry as we have always done it; maybe we worship on Saturday or Sunday, attend Sunday School, participate in a Bible study, quilt, or bring items for Care & Share. We teach, serve and pray. These are all good things to do as we share in Christ s ministry to each other and to the world. But, have you ever had an idea for something different? If there is something you would like to do, please share it with me. This could be an opportunity for a new ministry one that others might also enjoy. This is how visions begin. As we share our vision, others get excited with us and a new ministry takes root. How exciting is that?! Blessings, Carolyn

In the past two weeks we received canned and boxed food from both the Post Office food drive and also from the Wightman Weiber Kids Fest. The great thing about both was that we receive food that we normally do not buy! And with Zion; we continue to ask for catsup, mustard, salad dressings and condiments as well as baby food. These items are things which we normally do not buy. We continue to work with Second Harvest to get better pricing so we can buy based on quantity. We invite you to stop in and see how your donations are distributed. I am there Tuesday and Friday morning. And, we are always looking for volunteers! Submitted by Richard Long

Matthew 10:8 April April Budget YTD YTD Budget Income 37,126 34, , ,088 Expense 24,907 34, , ,236 Profit (Loss) 12,219 (37) (4,916) (148) Giving is more than just a word. It s a way of life. Share your time, talent and treasure. April had a profit of $12,219 which is fabulous news. The monthly offerings were $35,597 above the monthly budget by 3,180. Attendance for Palm Sunday and Easter worship services helped contribute to these offerings. May s Confirmation Sunday attendance was also awesome and reflected in the collection plate. The April expenses were lower than normal. Unfortunately, a big reason for the expenses being so low was due to Pastor John being on disability pay for his heart issues for the first part of April. The financial news for April at Zion was good, and we need to continue to grow our ministries. Go In Peace! Remember the Poor! Daniel L. I think Spring is finally here, for real. The flowering trees and spring flowers lasted longer this year and they were sure beautiful! I want to thank all those who came to our Spring Fling Potluck. Pastor Ken put on a most enjoyable program. It was amazing how he brought that piece of canvas to life. The icing on the cake was when he turned on the black light. He had nice music and a wonderful message to accompany his art. I want to give a huge thank you, to Connie Costello who chaired the committee and arranged for the program. Also, thank you, to her family for helping to set up, organize the food, and clean up. Great job, Connie and family! Zion women, were well represented at this year s Women of Excellence Banquet. Congratulations, to Christine Antel, Linda Kerst, Judy Mears, and Cindy Schwab, who were honored and received awards! Well done, ladies! We are in the process of making plans for our annual joint Bible study, to take place in August. Please, look for more information on date, place, and time in next month s newsletter. It is a great time for all the women from the various groups to get together for Bible study, fellowship, and a good time! All women are welcome, whether or not you are in a particular study group. This could prove to be a good way to get started with a group! The Northwestern Ohio Synodical Women s Convention, will be held on June 20, This will take place at St. Mark s Lutheran Church, in Bowling Green. The theme is Celebration of Generations. There will also be a Women s Fall Retreat for our district on September 26, at St. Paul s Lutheran Church in Norwalk. The program will be Healing Oils and Herbs of the Bible. May God bless everyone over the summer months with good health, joy, fun, relaxation, and safe travels. Remember, God does not take a vacation away from us, so be sure to take Him, on vacation with you! In His Service, Carla Mitchell (ZELCW President)

7 Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Page 7 For the past eight month I have lived in Semarang, Indonesia serving as an English Teaching Assistant under the Fulbright Program. While there, I worked at a madrasah, which is the most religious form of an Islamic high school in Indonesia. I want to preface my story by stating that Indonesia is an incredibly diverse archipelago comprised of more than 300 distinct cultures, meaning that my experiences do not represent all of Indonesia. For a myriad of reasons, including modern western influences and a history of being colonized, many people in Semarang, Indonesia revere white skin. Unlike in the United States, skin color is an accepted topic of discussion. Because of this, several times per day, someone would hold his or her arm next to mine and describe the beauty of my skin in comparison with the ugliness of their own. I explained that many people in the United States prefer darker skin to the point that we risk skin cancer to tan it. I explained that skin tones might be geographical and did not mean much beyond this. I explained that I was at a slight disadvantage in some ways; fair skinned people living in the tropics have a higher risk of skin cancer than people of color (see citation below). I explained that I found their skin equally beautiful. They humored me by smiling at my responses, but conversations tended to end with one last admiring look at my skin before walking away. We weren t connecting, and my efforts were not helping them. Obviously, this situation is complicated. Privilege, in its many existing forms, is frequently present in such a way that those with the privilege can ignore situations that otherwise may render the privileged uncomfortable. In this situation, I could not pretend it wasn t happening. I couldn't create an excuse. I couldn t kindly reason my way through it and smile through the rest of my day. For once, I had to address it directly. No, not had to. Got to. I had the opportunity to address something head-on, and frankly, I had no idea how to connect. One day, I came into school and six of my colleagues were huddled around a desk, sharing whispers and laughing. Periodically, they would glance in my direction. Guess what we did last night Clare! one woman exclaims. What? I ask, admittedly a bit nervous given their noticeably extreme excitement. We talked to an American pastor yesterday! Pastor John! He is yours, right? Yes, he is. So what did you talk about? They laugh more and avoid the question. I never did learn what Pastor John and the teacher of MAN2 Semarang spoke about on Facebook Messenger, because their next statement piqued my interest more. Same God. It was not the first time I had heard the sentiment while living in Indonesia. Though most people around me practiced Islam, they were no stranger to other faiths, and with that, many reminded me often that we have the same God. There it was: my connection. The next time my skin was compared to the skin of another, I said, I don't think God makes mistakes. God makes us perfect. They agreed. I do have to add as a disclaimer that this didn t solve the overreaching problem. But it did give us one moment where we were able to connect, one moment where, despite major language and cultural barriers, we could think about the same concept:: GOD. Submitted by Clare Volz

10 Page 10 ZIONEWS Synod Assembly Report May 15 & 16, 2015 Hearing the news about all the wonderful programs that have been started and/or continued in our Synod we want to let you know the church is ALIVE and the Holy Spirit is at work in our midst. BUT... the funds to keep these programs going are diminishing. Mission giving is down. The Bishop is asking that each congregation give $100 more each month toward Mission Support. That means outdoor camps could remain open, the food banks in Toledo can continue to operate to help the poor. (One church, with 40 members, feed thousands each year). There are church startups the five mission churches in our Synod (one helping with Spanish speaking) began a church in the Fremont area along with the United Methodist Church. And we help our two companion churches in Slovakia and Tanzania. With Mission Support giving down our Synod office has cut its staff down to bare bones. The Bishop only has one assistant now and the deans of each conference help out with duties. Remembering what sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us, can we do the same and each one of us sacrifice one dollar each month (let s say the 3rd Sunday of each month) for a special collection to meet this obligation to the Synod? The Holy Spirit was given to us by God to help us, guide us, and to support us. Can we open our hearts to help others? Our Synod Treasurer last year reported that giving was down, this year it was down an additional 5%; thus challenging us to accomplish the mission and ministry to which we are called. We have been richly blessed, 2 Corinthians 8-9 encourages us to be generous, can we pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit to accompany us in this conversation? We thank you for the opportunity to attend the Synod Assembly. We wish more of you would take the time to see and hear what is happening in the Synod. Next year we will be choosing a Bishop as Bishop Marcus Lohrmann is stepping down after 20 years. He has done a wonderful job. And this too will be an exciting part of the process. Respectfully submitted, John & Judy Mears

12 Page 12 ZIONEWS Sandusky Churches Adopt a School Partnership Thank you to all who participated in any way during the school year. Zion congregation is well represented at Osborne Elementary School in the front lines tutoring as well as behind the scenes. The staff and students are grateful for everything we have accomplished. Here is the short list: Classroom mentors, The Back to school Rally, birthday cards for students, recognition letters to students, dinner for staff during parent conference night, Classroom Angels, staff gift bags, crayon and pencils for each student for Christmas, Zion Choir Carroll Day, Science & Reading fair volunteers, SHS Parent Summit and much more. The short list is amazing but truly the most important representation that Zion Congregation has shown is weekly and daily prayer! The staff and students recognize that someone really DOES care about them. That is the true mission of S.C.A.A.S.P. During the SCAASP annual banquet Rosalyn Shepherd, founder, dedicated a moment and a book called WONDER to our late Zion Soldier, Anna Hoehne who passed away in April. Her humble loyalty as an Osborne Classroom Angel will always be remembered. This book is now on the shelves at Osborne Elementary School for all to enjoy. ***Mark your calendars August 8, 2015 from 12-3 pm for the 4th Annual Back to School Rally. This is a resource fair for parents, students, & teachers. Zion will have a game booth and handouts. We need volunteers for that day as well as collecting school supplies beginning now until August 5th. Glue sticks, yellow pencils and 24 pack crayons are greatly needed. Also added this year due to severe need in our community, School Uniform Collection. Walmart usually has navy blue or white polos, and Khaki slacks in any size for $6 to $10. More to be announced! Women of Excellence Congratulations to the Following "Women of Excellence" honored on April 26th for outstanding service to the community: Cindy Schwab, Judy Mears, Chris Antel and Linda Kerst. All of these women volunteered countless hours in non-profit agencies in Erie County. Zion Lutheran Church was well represented! Submitted by Linda Kerst
