ZIONEWS Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church June 2018 May the light of Christ and the warmth of the Spirit be with you! Summer is here, but don t go anywhere just yet. There will be all kinds of events happening in the life of Zion over the next three months. In addition to our regular weekly and monthly activities, there s quite a list! June 8 th and 9 th is the 2018 Northwestern Ohio Synod Assembly at Bowling Green State University. Please keep the all those at the assembly in your prayers, especially the voting members from Zion: Pastor Eric, Deacon Carolyn, Andy Castello, Richard Long, and Carla Mitchell. Several events will be happening around the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas. At worship on June 24 th, there will be a sending litany for the youths and adults who are going on the trip so we can surround them with our prayers. On June 26 th, we ll gather at St. Paul s parking lot at 4pm for prayer before travel. And the Gathering itself will be from June 27 th through July 1 st. The 4 th of July Stars & Stripes Celebration downtown will include a table presenting a brief visual history of the FLAMe congregations and a game booth. Please plan on either volunteering to be part of the booths or stopping by to visit them. July 20 th is Zion s 166 th anniversary as a congregation, but we re holding off the big celebration for two days because July 22 nd is the Block Party with Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and First Congregational United Church of Christ. As part of the Sandusky 2018 Bicentennial celebrations, congregations in Sandusky are participating in Heritage Sundays. The three congregations on the corner of Columbus and Jefferson will hold our Heritage Sunday together, even closing off part of Jefferson for food and activities. Please plan on being around for this celebration. July 23 rd through 27 th will be our Vacation Bible School God s Good Creation. We ll gather each morning from 9am-noon to learn about God s gift of creation. August 18 th, as I hope you know, is the Sandusky Bicentennial Founders Day. As part of that celebration, there will be a parade, and Zion will have a float in the parade. And August 19 th will be our annual congregational picnic down at Shoreline Park. Read through this and the forthcoming newsletters and announcements, check our website and Facebook page, or ask Deacon Carolyn or me for more information about any of these special summer events coming up. We don t really take much of a break over the summer! Peace, PE

Carolyn's Corner... When I was five years old my great grandmother died. I remember being at her farmhouse with all our relatives she had 11 living children and I had lots of cousins. And I remember eating my last Grandmother-made cookie. These sugar cookies were probably about 4 inches across and always had either a raisin or hickory nut half in the middle. Every time we went to visit Grandmother, she would bring out her cut glass bowl and my brother Bob and I were allowed to have one cookie. Years later, when Bob and I were reminiscing and this story came up, Mom laughed at us. She said these were probably the worst and stalest cookies she had ever tasted! Memories are important. Sure, we interpret our memories and maybe we remember the same incident differently than another might. But memories help us to know those who lived before us; they help us form into the persons we are. My brother and I have shared this story with our children, so that they might also know just a little bit about this woman who shaped our grandparents, our parents and who was important to us. We hope they pass the story along to their children. As the Sandusky community celebrates its Bicentennial and we at Zion begin to look forward a few years to celebrating our 125 th anniversary, this is a time to reminisce. Those of us who have come from other places have the opportunity to hear your stories and to celebrate this place. This is the importance of the theme, Generation to Generation; not only to pass the stories on, but also to interact and care about those who are older and younger than we are; to pray for each other; to serve each other. In Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible, God promises Abraham that he will become a great nation and that all people on earth will be blessed through (Abraham). In the New Testament, Matthew traces Jesus genealogy from Mary to Abraham to connect Jesus to this promise from God. Through all generations, to us living today and those in all future generations, God s promise continues. We here in Sandusky, Ohio are part of the promise; the promise that God provides forgiveness through Jesus our Lord and Savior. As we celebrate this time and place, may we continue to reflect on our role as we share our faith story from Generation to Generation. Blessings, Carolyn As our high schools and colleges celebrate graduations, please remember all students in your prayers. We especially pray for those from Zion that we know about: High school graduates are Jacqueline Butler from Edison High School, Jenna Hofer, Heather Leedy, Jaret Ohlemacher and Dawson Varuola from Sandusky High School, Sara Schultz from Margaretta High School, Hali Lyn Stull from St. Mary s Catholic School, and Brianna Armstrong, Emilio Calderon, Annabelle Gross, Madeline Kaseman, and Alexis Yontz from Perkins High School. College graduates are Elisha Hofer from Ashland College and Jeremy Meyers from Owens Community Technical College. If there is someone in your life who is graduating, please let the office know so that we can stay in touch.

Stars and Stripes Community Days Zion will again join with other FLAMe congregations to have a presence at the July 4 th celebration in downtown Sandusky. If you would like to volunteer to assist with activities (mostly hang out and greet your neighbors!) call This is a fun day and opportunity to share Zion s story in our community.

As we were... With the ending of another school year, did you know there was once a Lutheran elementary school in Sandusky? The Lutheran Parochial School The Lutheran Parochial School existed for almost 35 years. After holding classes in the old Lutheran church in Washington Park since 1891, Zion Lutheran Church dedicated a new parochial elementary school at the southeast corner of Decatur and Madison Streets on September 24, The builder of the school was George Feick a member of our congregation. He also was the architect and builder of Zion Lutheran Church s new building (the current church) which was under construction at the time the school opened. The land for the school was purchased for $1000 and it was built for $6000. Classes were held in the school until 1923 or 1925 according to the source. The Lutheran Parochial School, in both locations, played a significant role in the education of Lutheran German immigrants and descendants in Erie County. The school building was sold to Sandusky City Schools in 1927 and became part of the (Jackson) Junior High School. The Sandusky Library had this list of teachers who taught at the school: Emil Meyer, F. Wiechert, C.F. Knauer, G. Al Allwardt, Carl Schaub, Walter Wietzke, Frank Ruprecht, Otto Woelke, Katherine Dornbirer, Minnie Dornbirer, Lena Lehman, Ella Brehmer, Laura Bing, Elise Gerlach, Bertha Jahraus, Fannie Kahler, Clara Arheit, Katherine Feddersen and Louise Neubiser Below are pictures of the school building today. SMCC High School is the building to the left of the school and Jackson Jr. High is the brick building behind it.

St. Peter, Norwalk Trinity, Sandusky Zion, Sandusky Zion, Huron Your FLAMe Board met on May 21, 2018 at St. John s. Does your church have a medical team? Do they have a security team? Do you know that only one person should call 911 in an emergency? Who is that person in your congregation? What key information does 911 need? Our local sheriffs want every congregation to have answers to these questions. The April 24 th Church Safety Seminar sponsored by FLAMe was so successful another will be hosted September 25th. Make plans to send a contingent from your congregation. This information is essential. Also, the ELCA Christian Youth Network is presenting a Congregational Safety Training Workshop September 22 nd in Perrysburg at Zoar Lutheran. Every congregation is encouraged to send a representative. Did you see FLAMe in the Sandusky Register? There was a great article on the front page featuring the Giving Garden s planting day. FLAMe thanks Sharon Barnes from Barnes Nursery for donating twenty yards of compost and Dan Wright from Dan Wright s Plumbing for using his truck to haul three loads of the compost to the garden. We need more helpers to weed and water. Feeding the hungry in our community is God s will and we can do it together by supporting the Giving Garden. Lifetree Café will meet the second Monday of each summer month. The meetings will now be hosted at the Christian Center at the Prayer Labyrinth behind Zion, Huron. The meetings consist of a short film and discussion of our thoughts, questions, and ideas. The topic for June is Make the Most of Your Life.
