In today s gospel Jesus offers everyday images that reveal to us the reign of God: a tree that becomes a sheltering home, yeast that penetrates and expands, a treasured pearl, a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches of God s reign, the great surprise is that God s grace finds us first! 13 Adult Forum: Join the adult forum in the library between services where we'll be doing the study from the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ entitled Faith, Sexism, Justice: Conversations toward a Social Statement. During these sessions, we'll have the opportunity to participate in the creation of the social statement about women and justice in church and society that will be presented at the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. This study will engage us in conversations about gender inequality in our culture and traditions and how we might, as a congregation and denomination, strive to more faithfully live into the promises of God. July 30 - Session 6. Why do words and images for God matter? Aug. 6 - Session 7. How do we challenge the misuse of Scripture against women and girls? Common Lectionary Text Study with Pastor Eric and Pastor Katie Suggitt at Mr. Smith s Coffee House, 140 Columbus Ave. in Downtown Sandusky, every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Join together to study the readings for the coming Sunday. Everyone is welcome! Readings for August 5 th 6 th : Isaiah 55:1-5, Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21, Romans 9:1-5, Matthew 14:13-21 Thank you to the many folks who made our time with Paul: Rome and the Underground Church successful. Each day the children spent time with Paul who was chained to his guard while he was under house arrest. They visited Lucia and Marcus in the underground church and heard what it was like to have to worship Christ in secret. And, they visited the shopkeepers where they experienced what life was like for early Christians. As they sang and played games they heard about Jesus love for them. Thank you, leaders! Thank you to all of you who so generously sponsored Zion s VBS through your donations. Through these donations we were able to provide resources, including a family devotional booklet for the children to take home at the end of the week. Thank you also for your prayers, thoughts, and kind words. In memory of Lois Ardner, the hot dogs and buns for VBS were donated by Lester Ardner. 13

Lifetree Café is a casual and welcoming conversation cafe where great discussion is served up every month. At LifeTree Café, you're welcome just as you are. SCAASP 6 th ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL RALLY Saturday AUGUST 5, 2017 Noon to 3 p.m. Sandusky Bay Pavilion (the old Surf s Up) This is such a fun day and we expect over 600 in attendance and EACH STUDENT gets a filled book bag. We are beginning to collect school supplies in the gathering room (glue sticks, scissors, spiral notebooks, and yellow pencils). There is a list of everything we need posted on the table above the collection box. We are also in need of a total of six cases of water to be used at this event. If you are able to help with the purchase of a case, please bring the water to the office and it will be set aside for this event. We are in need of volunteers to help with the rally. If you are available to help, please contact Linda Kerst, Church Picnic - Join us on Sunday, August 20 th, from 12:30 to 4:00 at Shoreline Park for a great time of fun and fellowship. Bring your tableware and a covered dish to share. Don t forget your white elephant! Beverages will be provided. We will gather at 7pm on their lawn. BEACH East Harbor State Park August 20 th from 2-6 p.m. (You can join us after the church picnic) Keep an eye on the bulletin for more details! Jennifer Parkison, our Shared Ministry Youth Coordinator, is hosting a book study on Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris. They will be meeting again on Tuesday, September 19 th, at 6:00 p.m. at Panera Bread in Sandusky. This is open to High School age (15 and up) and young adults. 16 Children s Announcements: Welcome to worship. Paul lived long ago. He wrote many letters, telling people about Jesus and about God s love. One of these letters is called Romans. In Romans, Paul wrote that God loves us all the time, no matter what! He wrote that nothing anywhere can separate us from the love of God. That is very good news! In Matthew 13:31-33, Paul told about God s love in letters. Jesus didn t write letters, but he told about God s love in parables stories about everyday things. He described the treasures in God s kingdom of love. I sing, you sing, we all sing for ice cream! We are looking for all children who want to sing and have fun!
