Bodenstab Third Sunday in Lent Carolyn Steinfeldt, ELCA Deacon March 4, :00 & 10:30 a.m. Worship Introduction to the Day The third covenant in this year s Lenten readings is the central one of Israel s history: the gift of the law to those God freed from slavery. The ten commandments are one of the chief parts of Luther s catechism, a core piece of baptismal instruction. They begin with the statement that because God alone has freed us from the powers that oppressed us, we are to let nothing else claim first place in our lives. When Jesus throws the merchants out of the temple, he is defending the worship of God alone and rejecting the ways commerce and profit-making can become our gods. Please stand. GATHERING Welcome and Announcements Prelude: Shall We Gather By the River Michael Helman Bell Choir Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Keep us steadfast in your covenant of grace, and teach us the wisdom that comes only through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD (10:30) Choir Anthem: If You Love Me John Ness Beck Children s Message First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 (Pg. 65 in NRSV pew Bible) After escaping from slavery, the Israelites come to Mount Sinai, where God teaches them how to live in community. The ten commandments proclaim that God alone is worthy of worship. Flowing from God, the life of the community flourishes when based on honesty, trust, fidelity, and respect for life, family, and property. A reading from Exodus: 1 God spoke all these words: 2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3 you shall have no other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a 4

5 jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. 8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor s house; you shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. R Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (Pg in NRSV pew Bible) The word of the cross is pure foolishness and nonsense to the world because it claims that God is mostly revealed in weakness, humiliation, and death. But through such divine foolishness and weakness, God is working to save us. The center of Paul s preaching is Christ crucified. A reading from 1 Corinthians: 18 The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. 7 Gospel Acclamation (ELW p. 103) Gospel: John 2:13-22 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. (Pg. 919 in the NRSV pew Bible) Jesus attacks the commercialization of religion by driving merchants out of the temple. When challenged, he responds mysteriously, with the first prediction of his own death and resurrection. In the midst of a seemingly stable religious center, Jesus suggests that the center itself has changed. A reading from John: 13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s house a marketplace! 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. 18 The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? 19 Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for fortysix years, and will you raise it up in three days? 21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Preface Holy, Holy, Holy Thanksgiving at the Table God of our weary years, God of our silent tears For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death. Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world. Communion Distribution The belief of this congregation is that participation in the Lord s Supper is the reception of the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us to eat and drink (Luther s Small Catechism, ELW p. 1166). We believe that a person who has faith in these words, given for you and shed for you for the forgiveness of sin, is really worthy and well prepared. However, a person who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, because the words for you require truly believing hearts (Luther s Small Catechism, ELW p. 1166). Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m., in the Stellhorn Library, the former Men s Bible study extends an invitation to any and all who would like to join their time of discussion. Readings for March 11: Numbers 21:4-9, Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22, Ephesians 2:1-10, John 3:14-21 Pastor Eric s next Small Group will be starting up on Monday, March 5 th, and will meet every Monday at noon through April 30 th (except the Monday after Easter). This lunchtime small group will be reading and discussing Crossing the Bar: Home by Another Way, by James G. Johnson. James was a pastor in the ELCA, but is now the owner of the Bull n Bear Saloon and Casino in Red Lodge, Montana. This book is full of stories from his experience as a bartender who was a pastor and offers insights into how we as church people might build relationships with those who think of themselves as bar people. The book is available from Pastor Eric. Anyone who can make the time and is interested is invited to attend. Last year over $600 was collected from our congregation to aid in the continuing services. Attention all Ministry Teams and Committees: On Sunday, April 29 th, following the 10:30 a.m. worship service, there will be a church wide clean up! We need all Committees that have items stored here to do an inventory of their items, where it is stored, and when it is used. We will be cleaning out, throwing out, and straightening up. 17 F.L.Y. (Firelands Lutheran Youth) Announcements: As we think about Jesus cleansing the temple, we should also be reminded that there is some other cleaning that needs to be done. The Bible tells us that we are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in us. (1 Cor. 3:16) The season of Lent is a good time for us to look inside ourselves and see if there is anything in us that needs to be cleansed. 18 Children s Announcements: Today is the 3 rd Sunday in Lent. The color for Lent is purple. The season of Lent lasts 40 days. During Lent, we ask for forgiveness. Jesus forgives our sins. During Lent, we focus on ways to serve others. Following the Ten Commandments helps us serve others. Jesus taught us to love thy neighbor. Who are our neighbors? Everyone in the whole wide world! All children are welcome. During the month of March we will be learning about Holy Week. Join us for a fun time of learning through cooking, science, art, and Bible skills. If you notice we are trying to make our coloring pages in the worship bags go along with the readings of the day. We believe that a person who has faith in these words, given for you and shed for you for the forgiveness of sin, is really worthy and well prepared. However, a person who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, because the words for you require truly believing hearts (Luther s Small Catechism, ELW p. 1166).
