I would like to thank all my fellow officers and this entire Assembly for your support. To the best Faithful Comptroller in our district George Smrtka, for his tireless effort by keeping this Assembly afloat. To our Faithful Purser Bill Travnik for making his financial reports so easy for me to read and understand. To our Faithful Trustee s, Daryl Schwartz, Bob Jasinski, Chester Majocha, for keeping the bills to be paid straight. To our Faithful Scribe, Jack Hretz, who has done a great job in recording the minutes of every Assembly meeting. To Our Faithful Admiral John Hundiak, who has been doing a outstanding job filling in for the Friar at every meeting, and also doing what I think is the best and understandable Color Corp duty assignment list in the District. To our Faithful Pilot, Mike Mc Dermott for the energy and the enthusiasm he shows at every Assembly meeting set-up and take down, also bringing Continued on page 3 Sir Knights of Divine Mercy Assembly, We just concluded a very busy weekend and one of the last as FN for Dave Koss: June 7 th at Selfridge Air National Guard Base for a fallen police officer who was killed in an accident on the base. June 8 th we had Color Corps 101 training as a refresher for some and instruction for new color corps members. We had several members from our assembly present at SS Cyril Methodius. June 9 th we had a Blue Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary in Detroit to Honor our Police, Firefighters, and EMTs. Continued on page 3

2 Page 2 The Stars & Stripes Patriotism : Color Corps Perhaps this is obvious to some people. March 2012, Lake County, Florida. A flag depicting the President's face in the blue field in place of the stars was removed from Democratic headquarters in response to complaints from local veterans. The flag is very similar to the one we commented on three years ago (see January 19, 2009 below). Section 8g of the Flag Code reads, "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." Our Vets : Did You Know The Knights donated $1.1 million and provided an additional $3.4 million in loans to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, U.S.A. for its purchase of a new chancery building (headquarters) in Washington, D.C. Two Flags at once. "When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace." David Koss, Former Faithful Navigator Navigator : Duane Creviston Continued from page 1 Our Assembly has been very active since it s inception, six years ago, and especially so the past two. FN Dave Koss has done an outstanding job leading our Divine Mercy Assembly and further enhancing our image in all areas. We continue to have a great slate of officers, and I am proud to have been selected to steer this ship as Navigator. The Navigator is responsible for selecting the Color Corps Commander, and I ask PFN, PGK, Jim Bruewer to be our Commander, and he has accepted. Going forward we have: Officers Installation on September 5 th at Bishop Gallagher Assembly at 6:00 PM. John Iannotti is preparing dinner. What a treat. There is a Flag Retirement on September 17 th at SS Cyril Methodius, on Ryan & 18 mile at 6:00 PM. Bring any flag (s) you may have. This is a special ceremony, you will never forget it. Our fall Fourth Degree Exemplification is on September 21 st at De Carlos Banquet Center on 10 mile East of Mound Rd. We have several candidates signed up already, but please try to recruit more third degree members. Please try to attend as many of our functions as you can. 4 Page 4 Same Sex Marriage : Supreme Court Rules The federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, defining marriage as between one man and one woman, is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause, the Supreme Court ruled June 26 in a 5-4 opinion. In a separate case, the court sent back to lower courts a challenge to California's Proposition 8, the voter-approved initiative barring same-sex marriage. The apparent result is that same-sex marriage will again be legal in California as soon as the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals formally dismisses the case, as the high court instructed it. In this second 5-4 ruling, with a different lineup of justices, the court remanded the case on the grounds that the individuals who defended the law in court lacked legal standing to do so. In 32 states, constitutional amendments ban same-sex marriage, while 12 states and the District of Columbia recognize such marriages. Another eight states recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships, with some having overlapping bans on same-sex marriage. US Bishops : Tragic day for marriage and our Nation WASHINGTON The U.S. Supreme Court decisions June 26 striking down part of the Defense of Marriage Act and refusing to rule on the merits of a challenge to California s Proposition 8 mark a tragic day for marriage and our nation, said Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, chair of the U.S. bishops Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. The statement follows. Today is a tragic day for marriage and our nation. The Supreme Court has dealt a profound injustice to the American people by striking down in part the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The Court got it wrong. The federal government ought to respect the truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, even where states fail to do so. The preservation of liberty and justice requires that all laws, federal and state, respect the truth, including the truth about marriage. It is also unfortunate that the Court did not take the opportunity to uphold California s Proposition 8 but instead decided not to rule on the matter. The common good of all, especially our children, depends upon a society that strives to uphold the truth of marriage. Now is the time to redouble our efforts in witness to this truth. These decisions are part of a public debate of great consequence. The future of marriage and the well-being of our society hang in the balance. Marriage is the only institution that brings together a man and a woman for life, providing any child who comes from their union with the secure foundation of a mother and a father. Our culture has taken for granted for far too long what human nature, experience, common sense, and God s wise design all confirm: the difference between a man and a woman matters, and the difference between a mom and a dad matters. While the culture has failed in many ways to be marriage-strengthening, this is no reason to give up. Now is the time to strengthen marriage, not redefine it. When Jesus taught about the meaning of marriage the lifelong, exclusive union of husband and wife he pointed back to the beginning of God s creation of the human person as male and female (see Matthew 19). In the face of the customs and laws of his time, Jesus taught an unpopular truth that everyone could understand. The truth of marriage endures, and we will continue to boldly proclaim it with confidence and charity. Now that the Supreme Court has issued its decisions, with renewed purpose we call upon all of our leaders and the people of this good nation to stand steadfastly together in promoting and defending the unique meaning of marriage: one man, one woman, for life. We also ask for prayers as the Court s decisions are reviewed and their implications further clarified. Supreme : Constitution and American People are losers
