Special points of interest: April 2018 District 141 Division 5 Crab Fest Awards Council Accomplishments This Year Council Participation in School Solidarity Event Upcoming Officers Election New Carpet for Knight s Room St. Michael s Knights of Columbus Council Poway, California stmichaelsknightsofcolumbus.com Crab Fest Proceeds Given to Parish Youth Organizations The Crab Fest in February was a HUGE success. Net proceeds of the event totaled over $6,500. Almost $5,000 went to support various youth activities and organizations here at St. Michael s to include the High School Confirmation Class / Youth Ministry, the Holy Family Center Servers, Boy Scout Troop 654, and Cub Scout Pack 654. Each organization received proceeds proportional to the number of volunteer -hours provided to support the event. Inside this issue: Grand Knight s Message Program Director s Message Membership Chairman s Message 1-2 Schedule of Events 9 Officers and Committee Chairmen Before the March General Meeting, a special check presentation was made to Terri Cudmore, HS Confirmation/Youth Ministry (left), and Deann Zellman, HFC Servers (right), for their organizations help in supporting the Council s Crab Fest. Unfortunately, representatives for Boy Scout Troop 654 and Cub Scout Pack 654 were not available to receive their checks. Arrangements were made to have them delivered via other means. Grand Knight s Message: Winning Battles and Making Knights Over the past several weeks, I have found myself thinking about our Council and all the great events we have created, supported, or endorsed through the donation of individual and collective time, talent, and treasure. I am truly awestruck by the men we have in our Council and what we can accomplish locally, and worldwide as an Order. With the Council always on my mind, it seems I cannot watch a movie or read a newspaper without being reminded what it means to me to be a Knight. (continued on page 2)
Page 2 Grand Knight s Message: (continued) The one thing that I find myself wrestling with most, though, is that while we are great men doing great things, what is our purpose? Why do we do what we do? This reminded me of General Charles C. Krulak, the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps ( ). His tenure was after the Gulf War which as a large albeit short land war. The Marine Corps purpose to that point had rested firmly on the idea of being an amphibious/from the sea force. As such, the Commandant needed to re-evaluate the Corps purpose. Ultimately, he boiled the purpose of the Marine Corps to two basic components: winning battles and making Marines. When I think of the Knights of Columbus, I see strong similarities. In previous editions of this newsletter, I have extolled the principles of the Order, or the direction of its future, usually referring to how our St. Michael s Council and its Knights impact our environments of family, work, and social circles. Every day though, in these environments, we are challenged to win the battles that society throws at us. Whether it be the culture of death that minimizes the individual to a utilitarian calculus, the assault on the family, or a relativistic culture that puts happiness and pleasure ahead of sacrificial love; we are forced to fight battles daily. While these are but a few of the challenges we are asked to face, as Catholic men we have an obligation to not just stand ideally by. How fortunate we can face these as a brotherhood of Knights! I believe it was the also General Krulak who introduced the Marines Corps to the poetry of Rudyard Kipling, specifically from his Second Jungle Book, For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack. How apt a metaphor to explain the relationship between an individual Knight to his Council (and the Order-at-large) and conversely, the dependency of the organization on the Knight. The only way the Knights of Columbus can succeed in meeting the demands of our environments is through the individual Knight. Similarly, without a strong Order/Council, a Knight cannot succeed. This brings me to the second purpose of our Order: to make Knights. We have many strong wolves in our pack but some are growing weary. For our pack to succeed, it needs to grow. We need new blood, new energy, and new ideas. This is not to say what we are doing now is bad or wrong, but as the saying goes, If we are not growing, we are dying. The weekend of April 14/15 is our Membership Drive. I ask ALL Knights in the Council to represent the Knights of Columbus proudly at the recruitment drive with name badges and/or Council Shirt, and family if possible, after the Mass you normally attend. This is not so much about numbers as it is about preparing our pack for the next battle. Let s make our pack strong! Vivat Jesus, Mike Ercolano Grand Knight
Page 3 Deputy Grand Knight and Program Director s Message My fellow Knights, We completed the write-ups for the State Awards with a steadfast commitment to our six core activities our council focuses on: 1. Supporting our Church activities 2. Supporting Community activities 3. Supporting our own Council activities 4. Supporting our Culture of Life activities 5. Supporting Family activities The table below shows all the activities we have completed: Pretty impressive list! My thanks to all of you who supported us thru your time or treasure. Our Church, our Community, our Council, our Catholic Culture of Life, our Parish families, and our Youth are better off today because of your contributions. Thank you! Shaugn Reynolds Deputy Grand Knight and Programs Director
Page 4 A Minute with the Membership Chairman We have a major membership drive scheduled April 14 and 15. Please give 10 minutes of your time after the Mass you usually attend. Let us give every Catholic gentleman an opportunity to enrich their lives. We will try something different this year. We need Knights to cover all doors of the parish. Since you will only have less than a minute to talk to an interested parishioner we will have contact information cards and a single pamphlet available. Just get a name and phone number (Please bring a pen) and either you or I will follow up. Be sure to put your name on the card so you can get credit if you do the follow up. If you have time to talk with the parishioner, start by telling him why you joined the Knights and what impact in joining had on you. If the man seems interested, please send him to the table on the patio. I will cover all Sunday morning Masses, but need additional help at the Saturday and Sunday evening Masses. For the evening Masses the recruitment material will be in the flower room. With this new approach we will need more members to participate. I hope you will support the Council. Also, be sure to wear your badge. Thank you for your continued support for the council. Fraternally, John Giltner, PGK, PCP, FDD Council Membership Chairman Advancing through the Degrees For those of you who are looking to advance in your goal of becoming a full Knight by becoming a Third Degree Knight, please consider attending a Formation (2nd) Degree and/or Knighthood (3rd) Degree on the following dates and locations. 5 Page 5 Knights Support St. Michael s School Learn about Solidarity Solidarity binds all men together as members of a common family [and] makes it impossible for wealthy nations to look with indifference upon the hunger, misery, and poverty of other nations whose citizens are unable to enjoy even elementary human rights. St. John XXIII, On Christianity and Social Progress, no. 157 The St. Michael s School has centered this year's service/catholic Identity/awareness theme around the Catholic Social Teaching concept of Solidarity during the month of March. In keeping with that topic, the school wanted the students to experience a very simple soup meal, which might be all that many people in the world get in a day. Our council was asked to provide a simple broth and serve it to the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who participated in this educational evolution. Many thanks to Brothers Bryan Dolejs, Mike Ercolano, Bob Ramsey, and Bill Uberti for answering the call to support this worthy effort. For those keeping track, Solidarity is one of seven Catholic Social teachings. The other six are: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community, and Participation; (Human) Rights and Responsibilities; Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Care for God's Creation. For more information on Catholic Social Teaching, refer to the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website, to get a brief introduction to each of these principals and links to additional resources to learn more.
Page 6 Nomination of New Council Officers It is hard to believe we are wrapping up the Columbian Year this June. 7 Page 7 Fourth Degree Report Joseph T. O Callahan Assembly along with other local Assemblies had its Fourth Degree Ceremony on Saturday, February 17th at the Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley. The Local San Diego Assemblies pick up approx. 95 new members, including two new members from this Council, from this ceremony, which happens annually locally. In a small ceremony during monthly meeting, Joseph T. O Callahan Assembly received the Patriotism Star Assembly Award for Columbian Year This Award was only given two Assemblies in the entire Southern California District along with Civic Award for the same Columbian Year. This is the first time Assembly has won this Star Assembly award, which is very similar to the Council Star Award with the similar requirements. Looking ahead to April, the Assembly in its on going effort to bring forward informative and open meeting to the general public. The Assembly is presenting a speaker from the USS Midway Museum, who will give an hour presentation on the interesting facts about USS Midway and its present role as a museum. F.N. Vince Perez presents the Star Assembly Award Past F.N. Bob Ippolito In March, the Assembly hosted a presentation on Shroud of Turin given by John and Rebecca Jackson of the Turin Shroud Center of Colorado. This Seminar was held March 14th at San Rafael Parish Hall located at Bernardo Center Drive in Ranch Bernardo. With several hundred attendees, this presentation was open to the general public for a good will donation from attendees to offset expenses.
Page 8 A New Look It took some doing but thanks to the efforts of Brothers Bob Pratt, John Aguigam, Chuck Visk, and the Officers of the Council, the Knight s Room carpeting has finally been replaced. Overall, it took just over 13 hours over two days to remove the old 20 to 30 year old carpet, scrape-up the old glue, put down the new glue, and lay the carpet tiles. Come to the meeting on Wednesday April 6th to see the new carpet first hand. In the meantime, take a look at the job in progress. The old adhesive being hand scraped and vacuumed up. The new adhesive going down. It took about and hour for this white glue to dry to a tacky paste to which the tiles (seen on the right by the broom) could be secured. Job complete! A fresh new look for all to enjoy.
