Brian Fischer Chapter Representative: None Pro-Life Chairman: Joe Kickham Brick Chairman: Russ Blevins 4 th Degree: Kevin Hudnut Youth Director: Russ Henke Program Director: Gene Goertz Community Director: James Booth Church Director: Tom Larouere Family Director: Bill Steckel Membership Director: James Booth Council Director: Greg Lippert Field Agent: James Booth Cell # Insurance: The one compelling observation that my mother had about my father was, He knows no stranger. She was spot-on with that observation. It really didn t matter where my dad was or who the stranger was; he would just strike up a conversation with anyone. When I noticed this as a teenager, I admit I thought it was kind of strange, and maybe I was even a little embarrassed by his behavior. But as I ve gotten older, and less introverted, I realize now that I would be grateful to have only half of my dad s gift to gab. I ve come to appreciate that this really is a gift more each day as I try to break free from my comfort zone. As a parish, there is room for improvement in how we welcome people to our church, and council for that matter. It can start right when you get out of your car in the parking lot and can continue all the way to the church pew or at a council meeting. As our pastor (and council chaplain) Fr. Brian has said, It s not really about the numbers, but about the souls of those individuals. The goal is to bring people to the Church and closer to God, and ultimately, to heaven. In a few short days the church will be packed with those people that might rarely come to church the other Sundays throughout the year. The parking lot will be full, too. Not only will it be a challenge to find a place to park, but also to find a seat in church. But what an opportunity, as St. Benedict directed his followers to receive guests and travelers as if they were Christ. The truth is that there are many people in the parish and council who are very welcoming. Who knows, the people you reach out to might be their first time visiting our church. Think about the difference you can make in their faith journey. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. (Matt. 25:35) May you and your family enjoy a very blessed Christmas! Tim Roe, Grand Knight 1

BLOOD DRIVE Tom Kothe has arranged for another blood drive on December 27 from 3:00-7:00 in the social hall. Even if you can t donate, possibly stop by and see if any help is needed. One donation can save up to three lives! ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DINNER You and your families were invited to Council s Christmas Party catered by Stefanina s of Troy. Wayne Stoehner was there taking pictures, and our priests and seminarian tended the bar. And, of course, Santa (aka Carl Boekemier) was there! The social hall was pretty full with about 200 in attendance. Many people won attendance prizes, which were restaurant gift cards. A game where children threw rings on one of two reindeer s antlers for prizes also took place. Our council allocated $43,110 to the following: BackStoppers Birthright of Wentzville Boy Scouts 949 Gifting Committee Our Lady of Perpetual Help St Dominic High School St Patrick Parish (Church, Full-Time School, PSR, Youth Group) St Vincent de Paul (turkeys) Wentzville Knights Inc. Wentzville High School Grad Night (Holt, Liberty, Timberland) Note: Grad night is privately funded (not by state/school district) and meant to keep graduates safe and not out running around that night. 2

SAVE-A-LOT FOOD DRIVE Save-a-Lot food bags for $5.99 include food for a family of four, excluding meat, and the drive lasts from Oct 27 through Dec 23. To help, just go to Wentzville Save-a-Lot checkout and pick up one of the Save-a-Lot pre-packaged bags and pay for it. The council buys a turkey breast for every bag that is purchased and takes the turkeys and bags to St. Vincent de Paul. Our first pick-up of bags totaled at 70, which is highest for the first weekend. The second weekend had 57 bags and the third had 66 bags. The top-selling cashier from Save-a-Lot was invited to our Christmas dinner (along with two managers) and St. Vincent de Paul s Christmas dinner. HELP WANTED/NEEDED James Booth, our Membership Director and Field Agent, would like to form a first degree membership committee to take some of the burden off his plate. Plus, we will be able to meet our quota (29 more) of new Knights for the fraternal year with more people actively recruiting. Tom Larouere has been the Church Director for our council for over 12 years and feels it s time to step down and get some fresh blood into the position. However, he is still willing to help. 8

THE UNITY PRAYER May our feet journey together. May our hands gather in unity. May our hearts beat in unison. May our souls be in harmony. May our thoughts be as one. May our ears listen to the silence together. May our glances profoundly penetrate each other. May our lips pray together to gain mercy from the Eternal Father. Amen Chancellor Bob Pohl printed out the above prayer, and we prayed it out loud at the November council meeting, and plan on praying it at every council meeting in the future during Bob s officer report. 5 TH SUNDAY ROSARY/MASS We had a 5 th Sunday on October 29 th. There were 22 for the rosary that walked in together, along with 66 inside church for rosary. Supreme now wants this program to be called Family Rosary, meaning the parish should be heavily involved, not the Knights, and it doesn t have to be done on a fifth Sunday. We have one more fifth Sunday this year: December 31, however, this will be the last one we do on a fifth Sunday as next year we may do four rosaries, but not necessarily on fifth Sundays. CANNED FOOD DRIVE At the December dinner (and the past few council meetings), you could bring two canned goods or a dollar for a ticket for a chance to win a polo shirt of your color and size. You could also bring in a hat or coat for a chance to win a shirt. The grand total for the drive was 307 food items, 9 coats, 2 hats, and $233 in cash donations. All went to St. Vincent de Paul. 9

FAMILY FALL YARD CLEANUP Report from Bill Steckel: We had around 25 Knights, several with a family member. Also had 4 Knights and a son work a yard a previous week for a fellow Knight. Each event started at 8:00 and was finished at noon. Lunch and libations were had afterwards. Good weather and good help made the job a huge success. Thanks to everyone for everything. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA On December 3 after the 7 and 9 AM Masses, Knights helped with serving breakfast. The youth group worked tables, Wayne Stoehner took pictures, Jerry and Tom Orf ran the kitchen, Tom Luechtefeld was Santa, and Tom Kothe and boy scouts set up the Christmas trees. BLAST FROM THE PAST This was from the December 2006 newsletter: 10

ALZHEIMER S DISEASE THURSDAY, Dec. 7, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- As the baby boomer population ages, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease will double by 2060, researchers report. The study findings, which show cases of Alzheimer's and mild cognitive impairment going from 6 million this year to 15 million in four decades, highlight the need to better identify people with a brain-related disease, and to slow its progression. "There are about 47 million people in the U.S. today who have some evidence of preclinical Alzheimer's," said study author Ron Brookmeyer. He is a professor of biostatistics at the Fielding School of Public Health at University of California, Los Angeles. "Many of them will not progress to Alzheimer's dementia in their lifetimes. We need to have improved methods to identify which persons will progress to clinical symptoms, and develop interventions for them that could slow the progression of the disease, if not stop it altogether," Brookmeyer said in a UCLA news release. The researchers used information from large Alzheimer's studies to create a computer model to estimate the number of future Alzheimer's cases. The investigators determined that by 2060, about 5.7 million Americans will have mild cognitive impairment and another 9.3 million will have full-blown Alzheimer's. Of those with Alzheimer's, about 4 million will require intensive care, such as that provided in nursing homes. "Estimates by disease state and severity are important because the resources needed to care for patients vary so much over the course of the illness," Brookmeyer said. People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have significant short-term memory loss but do not necessarily have problems with daily functioning. While those with MCI are more likely to go on to develop Alzheimer's disease, MCI does not always lead to dementia. In full-blown Alzheimer's, the symptoms are more severe, and include memory loss as well as impaired judgment and thinking, problems with performing normal daily activities and, sometimes, personality changes. The study was published Dec. 7 in Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. 11

SENIOR KNIGHTS OUTREACH PROGRAM Are you, or someone you know, not able to get out much due to physical limitations? We have Knights that would like to support you! It may be as simple as a phone call to chat with you for a few minutes. It could be a visit to see you in person. It also could be a ride to bring you to a council meeting/event or just take you out for lunch. If you would be interested in receiving this kind of support, please contact Tim Roe at or TimRoeToolMan@Yahoo.com. ATTENDANCE PRIZE For each council meeting, a name is drawn to see who might win the attendance prize. If the person drawn is not present, then the amount is rolled over for the next meeting. $250 William Hazelbaker was drawn at the council meeting last month and was not present. The jackpot is now $250.
