There are a few activities planned here at church for July, so be sure to keep an eye on the calendar. Take time to enjoy a little family vacation, but don t forget we still meet every Sunday morning to worship our Lord and King. The biggest part of our July plans will be focused on VBS. The week of July 17 will be the week of VBS. We are going to be having Bible School during the evening hours, again, this year. It worked well last year and seemed to be easier on working parents. We will begin with a meal, so there is no need to concern yourselves with cooking. Come and eat, the whole family is invited to supper. The children will be learning in the Maker Fun Factory. Be sure to get VBS on your calendar; it is going to be a fun week for everyone involved. The other big meeting on the calendar is one that I just added. There will be a Hog Roast Planning meeting on July 26 at 7:00pm here at church. If you are interested in helping with the hog roast, or would like to have an opinion on how the hog roast happens this year, come to that meeting. The biennial hog roast will be on September 17 with worship at 4:00pm outside weather permitting and supper served around 5:00pm. The Rev. Justin Eller will be our preacher that day. Pr. Justin and his wife were missionaries for the ELCA in South America his first seven years of ordained ministry, and is now the Associate Pastor of First Lutheran in Lincoln. We will have some supper entertainment, also. Less Talk More Polka will be keeping us entertained and encouraging Melvin to cut a rug! The polka band is made up of former music majors and UNL marching band members who still live in Lincoln. The band leader was a high school classmate of mine, so she is ready and excited to play for us. Be sure to get the date of the Hog Roast on your calendars September 17, The last Sunday of July we are going to worship in a vastly different style from what we normally do. Our typical style of worship is what I like to call formal. The style for July 30 will be very informal. There have been some inquiries and wondering why we don t often change up our style of worship, even though we change up the settings. That is a valid question and the short answer is because

2 Page 2 Pastor s Page Continued we simply don t. July 30 we will. The service on the 30th will be a service without any liturgy or formal order of worship. If you read through the hymnal, you ll notice little red directions written into each service. Those are call rubrics and are really nothing more that hints and helps for the organization and order of worship. You ll notice that the rubrics many times use the word may when describing what comes next...i.e., A Kyrie may be sung... Any time the rubrics use the word may, it typically means that when it comes to following the liturgical order of service that part of the service is optional. You will also notice that we almost always follow the entire service, including the optional sections. The last Sunday of July, we will take out all optional sections of the service and focus the entire service on the two major parts, the Word and the Sacrament. There will be more singing than in typical, there will be fewer liturgical elements than is typical, the focus will be on the readings and sermon and on the meal. I call it informal, many others refer to it as contemporary. Either way, that will be July 30, so come and experience something new with us. Other than a few committee meetings and council, the month of July is pretty much just that. Be sure to enjoy your summer. Confirmation is just around the corner! 7 Page 7 Council Minutes ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Minutes of the meeting of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Council held May 10 th, Council Members Present: Rob Tewes, Karen Brhel, John Borgmann, Julia Johanson, Byron Nelson, LaRita Lang, Pastor Andrew Kitzing Council Members Absent: Randy Strauss Others Present: Craig Stirtz Meeting Called to Order Following opening devotions by Pastor Andrew Kitzing, Rob Tewes called the meeting to order at 7:07 pm. Karen Brhel made a motion to approve the agenda. LaRita Lang seconded the motion. The motion passed. Approval of Minutes Minutes from the April 11 th, 2017 Council meeting were distributed via with additional copies made for review at the meeting. Julia Johanson made a motion to accept the April 11 th, 2017 minutes. Byron Nelson seconded the motion. The motion passed. Pastor s Report Holy Week went well; however, the attendance was down. Confirmation was April 30 th. The Intern Banquet was held May 2 nd. Pastor Andrew will be in Texas May 15 th 20 th. New member classes will be held May 23 rd & May 28 th. June 1 st 3 rd is Synod Assembly in Kearney. June 4 th is Pentecost (3 baptisms since last year). There is a possibility of a polka band at the Hog Roast this year. Treasurer s Report Total regular offering for April 2017 was $9, Total expenses were $9, Net gain of $ The checking account balance is $117, Special operating funds are $73, The year-to-date building fund is $1, This leaves a spendable balance of $42, LaRita Lang made a motion to accept the Treasurer s report. 8 Page 8 Council Minutes Continued Ministry Reports Building Ministry: Did not meet. Education Ministry: VBS will be held July 17 th 20 th from 5:30pm 8pm. Evangelism Ministry: Did not meet. Health Cabinet Ministry: Did not meet. Property Ministry: Spring clean-up was April 22 nd. A lot of work got done. Social Ministry: Cupcakes and cakes where ordered for Confirmation. Stewardship Ministry: Next meeting is June 4 th. Worship Ministry: Met May 3 rd. Old Business A Place of Belonging Logo There was additional logo discussion. Nothing set in stone yet. Bylaws Page 2 was completed without any changes. Page 3 for next month. New Business Nebraska Synod Banner Project Julia has agreed to provide the material for the project. Lutheran Center Internship Banquet Julia attended the banquet. It was a nice send off for Allison and they introduced the new intern (Ashlynn). Memorial Ideas Several new memorial items have been ordered & will be here soon. Craig Stirtz \ Endowment Craig came & talked about endowments the mission, goals, purpose, and funding of an endowment. They are not to supplement the budget. Most endowments are set-up for external funds (going beyond the walls of the church). Estate gifts usually support the endowment. Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for June 14 th, 2017 at 7:00 pm.
