3 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 5 PAGE 3 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 5 MAY 2018 PASTOR S PEN During the Easter season we use the word Paschal often in our liturgy. It is a Greek word that means to pass over. It is obvious that there is a connection with the Jewish Passover feast, which Jesus was celebrating with his disciples as we remembered on Maundy Thursday. When we look at the Paschal Mystery in general terms, without any religious lingo, the Paschal Mystery is basically the process of dying and rising, death and new life. Indeed, life and death have a symbiotic relationship. The Paschal Mystery in the context of our religious beliefs and the life of Jesus Christ, we come to a deeper meaning of dying and rising. Jesus Christ s passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension are the ultimate event of dying and rising, of death and new life. We learn from Jesus that new life can come from death, that we can find meaning in tough times, that there really is light in the darkness. We learn that all life has this rhythm of dying and rising and that God is with us in good times and in bad. Christ s experience of suffering, death, and new life has forever changed us and given us a different way of living. Death no longer has the last word. Plus, when we encounter tough times, we have the comfort of knowing that God has been there, done that and the power of hope that new life will come from death. Becoming conscious of our own dying and rising helps us have a greater sense of compassion for others and a greater willingness to reach out. Think about your own life. What is a dying or rising that you have experienced today, this week, this year? Reflect on that experience in light of the event of Jesus Christ s passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Warner LUTHERAN NIGHT AT THE PHILLIES Help support Synod youth programs and enjoy a Friday night at the ballpark when the Phillies take on the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:05 p.m. on June 8, for the annual Lutheran Night at the Phillies. Tickets make a great gift for that sports fan in your life, and proceeds will benefit SEPA youth programs. April is here and we are all patiently waiting for the blooming of the flowers and trees, patiently waiting to enjoy the outdoors beauty. We wish to thank everyone who placed a candy order this year. This continues to be one of Immanuel s money makers to keep us going. A special thank you to Amy Graham and Jeanie Warner for their extra help in creating these delicious candies. We look forward to celebrating all our wonderful mothers after service on May 13 th. Let us hope Spring has sprung by then. May everyone stay healthy, happy and safe. 5 PAGE 5 RESOURCE It is the committee's privilege and responsibility to manage the finances of the church. As Christians it is the privilege and responsibility of all members to support the work of Immanuel Lutheran, our church home. God gives us the opportunity to serve our community, and to demonstrate that we are a congregation that is transformed by the grace, faith and love that we experience through Christ our Lord. As stated at the Annual Meeting, based on our estimated income for this year vs our estimated expenses for the coming year we will have a $14,000 deficit which will have to come from our investments. As you know from your home finances, it is not good financial management to use our emergency savings fund to pay day to day expenses. If 50 givers increased their offering by $5/week then we would make up $13,000 of that deficit just $5.00/week. Can you? Have You? Our Income consists of Offerings (the largest single source of funds) Cell Tower Rent Acme/Giant/ShopRite Certificates Xmas Bazaar Building Rental Oil/Insurance Board Thrivent Choice Amazon Smile Simply Giving (a way to have your offering come directly from your bank account on a scheduled day) allows the church to have a consistent giving when you are away on vacation or if weather prevents you from coming to church. See Jeanne Warner if you have questions or want to see the withdrawal form. Supporting Social Ministry with the Christmas Bazaar and other events helps us raise money. Giving of your time and talents complements the monetary gifts and demonstrates your commitment to this congregation of believers. 6 PAGE 6 RESOURCE (CONTINUED) Last year our members supported the LED Light Replacement and the purchase of our Chair Lift This was Great! We want to keep moving forward at Immanuel, but in order to do that we need to be able to keep current on our monthly bills. In March we didn't have sufficient operating income so we did use money from our investment account to cover the quarterly insurance bill. We did ask for your help and we did get a response instead of being $ short we ll be about $700. So that is progress and shows how close we are? 7 PAGE 7 ACOLYTE: Lights the candles prior to service, hand the offering plates to the ushers and collects the plates, and assist with Communion when needed; minimum age 10 years old (but no age limit adults may also apply). Worship & Music. ALTAR GUILD MEMBER: Well suited for someone who likes to work alone and would enjoy preparing the Altar for worship, and be spiritually rewarded by having oneon-one time in our Lord s House. Set-up on Saturday (about minutes) and putaway on Sunday. Training and an instructional binder provided. Altar Guild LITURGIST: Worship assistant aiding the Pastor in the Liturgical section of the service; assist with Communion. Liturgy can be spoken if you don t want to sing. Brief training required high school age or above. Worship & Music. LECTOR: An individual who stands at the lectern and reads the first and second lesson and the Psalm during service requirement ability to read aloud. Worship & Music. USHER: Someone who passes the offering plates and brings the Communion accoutrements to Pastor (when needed). Worship & Music. 7

8 PAGE 8 Heating Oil - End Of Season Update First: Your Resource Committee wants to say Thank You to Immanuel for your support of our Thank You Board program has helped us raise money toward paying our Heating Oil bills through the 11 month budget process. Second: By the time you are reading this we all hope and pray it has finally stopped snowing and it is warming up!! Third: As we all know we did have quite a bit of cold weather this season. This means we have used more oil than what we budgeted for so at the end of the 11 month budget we have to make up the deficit. As of this time we are sending more per month to close the gap but we predict we ll still be between $ and $ short. Forth: We ask everyone to prayerfully consider what you may be able to do to help us with this. Every little bit helps! Please do whatever you can! Thank You! Please take an envelope off the Thank you board which will be located in the Hospitality Area. There is a new envelope there each month. It involves coming in once a week, on a Thursday or Friday morning before noon to fold the Sunday bulletins. It only takes about an hour a week.
