It takes much work to follow up on collecting the dues for the Council. In 2006 I had to sign 89 letters to Knights who didn t pay their $30. I do not want to do that again plus it takes time and money to send out letters to people who haven t paid. I don't think you want Sam calling you. Also we are very busy already this year. Just to touch on how busy things have been, we have had the Wine Tasting and Social already by the time you get this letter. The first week of February goes like this. There is a 24 hour Adoration by the Knights on February 1-2, followed by our Rosary at 4:30 PM on Saturday. The Chicken Super Bowl BBQ takes place over the weekend with prep on Friday, cooking on Saturday, and sales on Sunday the 3 rd. Don t forget our Basketball Free Throw on Tuesday, February 5. There is Ash Wednesday on Wednesday. Our Membership Meeting is on February 7 followed by our new Fish n Chips dinners on Friday, February 8. Oh yes, St. Valentines Day Dance on Saturday. There is something for every Knight to participate in that week. We are looking for some brothers to step up and give Cleveland a rest and take over the spring Golf Tournament. Cleveland would like to have a tournament in the Fall. What do you think? Also, we will have the parish Habitat home starting up in the Spring (planning is in progress). I would like every Knight to start thinking on how you can serve the Council this coming fraternal year. Look at taking an officer position or a directors position. A good way to start is doing the FISH FRY during lent. Brothers we need your help. Some of the benefits of this new event will go towards the Wheel Chair program. 1 February 2008 I realize that many brothers are spread thin and can not attend the meetings at times. However, if you ever find the time, come to the Hall and check us out. We have over 450+ members and we only get 60 brothers to show up. This last New Years Eve we only had MAYBE 25 couples. There was plenty of food and drinks. What do we have to do to get you to participate? I know some of you have children and other commitments but can you at least spare one Thursday or help out at one event? For the new brothers, I ask you to continue to support the Council. Remember, the most popular answer every new Knight gives when he joins is that he wants to help out. There are many things that we need to discuss at the next General Meeting. So if you can reserve some time, please attend on February 7th with Mass starting at 7pm. This year we will be raffling a flat screen TV with home theater sound system. This was discussed at the Business Meeting and will take place in October at the Columbus Day Dance. Funds will go to our Council Charities. We need to sell 600 tickets. We need your help in making this happen. Can I count on you? I am wondering if I mail a ticket to every brother, we could already have sold more than three quarters of the six hundred. Brothers, St Vincent de Paul Society needs our help with Home Visitors, the Food Pantry, SAAMS dining hall, new members, and other areas. Contact Brother Paul Ellsworth at PDE9541@aol.com As I said earlier, when I joined the Knights of Columbus I said I want to be part of an organization that helps people. Ask yourself this question: If I am not doing at least one event, why am I in the Knights? Please continue to pray for our brothers on the Brother to Brother prayer list. It seems that it grows longer each month. But it is proven that prayer works. I hope to see new faces at our general meeting in the coming months. Our next meeting is February 7 th. There is a lot to discuss and we want to hear from you.
3 MEMORIAL S The Memorial Cross Is On Display When you walk into Christopher Hall, you will see this beautiful cross on the wall right before you enter the Hall. Through the efforts of Leo Forget, Clarke Ehrlich, and Brian Nelson the Memorial Cross of Christopher Hall was hung. Notice the picture that says Your Name Here. There are 7 available spots on the cross. For a $1,000 donation by either a lump sum payment or a pledge of payments over whatever period you feel comfortable, you can have your plate engraved. 6 At our meeting yesterday we decided on two bits of news: USQUIRES NITY 1) We will hold an investiture on 2/9 at 5:30pm, immediately prior to the Valentines dance. We currently have 7 potential new Squires and would love to see more. 2) On 2/22 we will be hosting a Family Fun (K)night! from 6pm to 10pm. We plan to offer both board and card games plus a family friendly movie. This event is open to all the parish and we'd like to see a large crowd come out and join us. Our circle will provide sodas. We are asking Squire attendees to bring a snack to share. 3) December the Squires invested three new Squires for St.Mark and one for St.Anthonys. This weekend the Squires officers went to Mission, Texas for the annual Mid-Year convention. Next convention will be at Brownsville in July. 7 T HE DEACON U NITY SAYS A Few Words About Lent I have had several folks ask me, Why is Lent so early this year? Lo and behold, Ash Wednesday is just about as early as it can possibly be --- by 24 hours! Very simply, Ash Wednesday is 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. So how do we know when Easter is? Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (March 21 st ). This year, the full moon occurs on March 21 st and it is Friday. So the only way that Ash Wednesday could ever be earlier (by one day) would be if the full moon occurs on March 21 st and it was on Saturday. Then Easter would be on March 22d and Ash Wednesday would be on Feb 5 th. This all becomes important because Easter is the primary focus of Christianity. Some think that Christmas is the most important Christian holiday. However, when you think about it, it is easy to see that the purpose for Christ s incarnation was to give us his passion and resurrection as a gift from God. His birth was just a necessary step leading to his life, death, and resurrection. As we focus during this Lenten Season on Christ s sacrifice, we should each make a sacrifice of our own. Remember that the sacrifice need not be the giving up of something (like a favorite TV show or chocolate). The sacrifice can be a positive action. For example, you could pray a rosary daily for some special intention (while giving up a TV show!). Or you could receive Eucharist daily at Mass or a communion service. Or you could help with Mobile Loaves and Fishes ( feed the hungry ). Or you could visit a nursing home twice a week and talk with the residents ( visit the imprisoned ). Get the idea? Lent should be the holiest season of your year. This is your time to focus on giving back to Christ in thanksgiving for his gift to you. Happy Easter. Deacon Steve+ 6

Garcia to the Committee. He will be filling the unexpired term of Matt DeLozier which will run another two and one half years. Mario is one of our newer knights having received his first degree in November and his second and third degrees in December. His varied business background will make him a great contributor to CHOC. He is eager and willing to work and we look forward to his association on the committee. A few things are on the drawing boards and will be happening shortly. We plan to add a spotlight on the outside of the building that will focus on the Christopher Hall sign. This will help folks arriving at night to locate the facility without having to ask directions. Another project in the works is to automate the front door just like those you now see at our main sanctuary. Only the door on the right as you enter the building will be automated. This will be a great addition to our building and a real benefit to the physically challenged. The cost is being shared with the church. CHOC's cost is $650 and a gracious parishioner has pledged a contribution of $1,200. The total cost will be $1,850. Our former chairman, Brian Nelson, is getting this project accomplished. Thanks Brian. In the Spring, probably sometime in March or early April, CHOC will buy 10 yards of top dressing to put on our lawn. As you recall, we installed the grass last year and about the only good soil there came with the sod. The addition of this topsoil will really add to the overall growth and appearance of the lawn. So...when the day comes that the truck unloads the soil we are going to need a bunch of guys to spread it. When the time comes, we'll keep you posted. Last month, in my haste to put out the report, I forgot to mention that CHOC was able to give a $1, contribution to the Coucil to help with the Seminary Support charity. CHOC continues to work for all the Knights making Christopher Hall a great place to meet. For the Committee, Elroy T., Chairman 7

11 MYSTERY We are having a raffle. Be sure to come to the next meeting to find out all the details. This will be a parish wide raffle. Be sure to tell all your friends. Tickets will go on sale soon - Details to follow A S SEEN THROUGH MY EYES As I spent time last weekend on the St. Mark s Men s Acts Retreat, I had some time to reflect on our Church Community. The one major thing that I kept hearing from the Retreatants was their longing to belong to Their Church Community. How many times do you sit next to someone in church, say hello, or whatever, and know absolutely nothing about the person. About two years ago, a person that usually sits behind my wife and I invited us and two other couples out to breakfast. We are continuing to do this on a monthly basis. It was a little awkward at first not knowing anything about the other people, but I can honestly say they are now my friends. The St. Marks Acts Retreats for both men and women generate a lot of desire to belong. Most people would love to help out and belong to a ministry, but they are waiting to be asked. Why not take the first step and invite a stranger into your inner circle. I ll bet you will make a new friend and so will they. Gary J. Adams Council Director 10

14 Good Men: Super Bowl BBQ and Woodcutting I do not know if you will receive this in time for our biggest, baddest, and most famous barbecue of the year. Regardless, if you just get this by February 1 st, be sure to hustle on over to the big prep with Lloyd Anders and crew, and make time for the many other events which go into this major fraternal and fund-raising event. Remember, this is the one where we do 1600 halves, so get ready to work hard, have a great time, and buy several chickens to get you through the next few months. If you get this afterward, many thanks to all who participated and bought these wonderful chickens. The plan is even sell chickens at the Sunday evening mass if any are left. Many thanks to those of you who gave or are giving of your time Sunday afternoon. A man who deserves special appreciation for all our barbecues is Johnny Klar and the crews he pulls together to have plenty of firewood for that wonderful smoked flavor everyone loves. On January 19 th, Johnny and a few brothers went out to cut, load and stack enough wood to get us through Super Bowl weekend. The plan is to get a group together soon before it gets hot to return and cut and stack more wood. At least six chain saws will be needed. This should be a great time with guys like Zappie, George and George, Jr., McQuade, David Winkley, Chris Zapata, Scott Klar, and John R (I couldn t spell his name, either Zappie!!). To make it even more fun, they are looking at having a little barbecue out at the worksite for those who show. Keep your eyes on your . God bless you all, and let s kick off calendar year 2008 with the perfect fraternal event and fund-raising for our very deserving students and scholarship fund. Mike Pattillo
