We're about to jump that seemingly large but invisible gap that separates the years Happy New Year! We made it. The old year, for better or worse, is gone for good. The new year has begun with fresh promise. Here's our chance to start again, to do it right this time, to have another shot at success...at glory...at just accomplishing what we resolve to. It's time to shed that baggage from the year long gone and celebrate what can be in the 365 untouched days to come. By the time you receive this newsletter many of the gifts and decorations will have been put away and the holiday parties just a faded memory. I hope each of you and your Love Ones had a joyous and meaningful Christmas remembering to keep Christ in Christmas. The Council Year is exactly half over and we still have much to do. Please be generous with your time when you are called upon to help out. December, as always, was a busy month. The Chicken BBQ sold out, the Christmas Party was a total success, the new members coming to our December Membership meeting was astounding, January 2008 the Keep Christ in Christmas Magnet sales were successful along with many other Council activities equals many man-hours of work. There is not enough newsletter space to mention all of your names so I won t attempt to do so. But you and I know who you are and I THANK YOU. And to end the year 2007 is the New Years Eve Party beginning at 7 PM. This is another great way to share friendship with our Council. Looking ahead, our next big event will be Red Rose Sunday on January 20 and the Wine Tasting on January 19. These events go hand in hand since our Wine Tasting supports right to life causes and The Single Rose Sunday (the Knights bring up a single Red Rose on the Alter before each Mass) signifies right to life. There is always something of interest for our new Brothers to be involved with. In closing, I wish to say to all my brothers and their families, have a very Happy and Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Fraternally, Luis Luis Grand Knight When asked, Why is your attitude always so positive, He replied: Because it s not any fun to be negative! 1

2 M ENTORSHIP Mentorship Update Our most recent membership drive proved to be very successful with over twenty new Brothers coming on board. On Thursday Dec. 6, most of them attended the meeting making it one of the largest groups ever to attend a general membership meeting of our council. Welcome to all of our new members!! Part of this success is due to the many Brothers that stepped up and agreed to mentor our new members. Thank you, Brothers for stepping up and helping to make this such a huge success! A list of new members and their mentors is included below. In order to build on this, we need additional Brothers to continue to volunteer as Mentors in the future. Mentoring is a fun and rewarding opportunity for each one of us. Some suggestions of what Mentors can do are as follows: - Contact the new member and welcome them to our Council. - If possible, get to know the new member, what mass they attend, their family etc. - Contact the new member regularly and let them know about upcoming meetings. - Make reminder phone calls as events grow closer. Offer to pick them up for meetings and events. - Encourage involvement in various K/C activities, BBQ, Bingo, parties, business meetings etc. Invite them to join your teams. MENTEE Acosta, Gonzalo Alvarado, Lou Baksic, Mike Bauer, Steven Bednarski, Brent Beaullieu, Stuart Frenmonsky, Eric Felux, Gregory Garcia, Chris Garcia, Mario Gonzales, Chris Goyco, Rafael Guttierrez, Gerard Hanson, Don Huber, Mike Jiminez, Ruben Menchen, Paul Pelton, Bart Poe, Melvin Purcell, Brian Ramos, Ramiro Robles, Daniel Rojas, Salvador Sanchez, Jesse Steinmetz, Chad MENTOR Sam Szalwinski Sam Szalwinski Chuck Barksdale Elroy Tschirhart Brian Nelson Jerry Zapata Larry Zoller Dan Alderete James McRae Felix Hernandez Ed. By then, the new members are well entrenched into our council and activities. Brothers THANK YOU once again for stepping up and helping to bring in our new members. Mentorship plays a very important role in the growth of our Council. I can be reached via , danoa@aol.com or phone, if anyone has any questions or would like to volunteer as to mentor a new brother. Finally, I have heard from some of our Brothers who have volunteered to serve as Mentors but are not listed. I apologize for the confusion, that information did not reach me. Please contact me and I will do my best to make sure this does not happen again. Thank you also to those not named below as Mentors that intended to serve. 2

5 R ELIGIOUS U NITY Texas A&M Council #1!! Do you have a son or a Godson, or just know of a young man attending Texas A&M University? I know that we have some of our own young members who are at school in Aggieland. Did you know that the Texas Aggie Knights of Columbus Council was recognized as the top collegiate council in the United States? (Or, for that matter, did you know that six young Aggies were ordained into the priesthood this past year?) If you know a young man attending A&M, encourage him to join the Texas A&M Knights of Columbus Council at St. Mary s the A&M student parish. What better way to round out an education than to learn how to become an adult Catholic? Congratulations to those young Texas Aggies and brother Knights! Y OUTH St Mark s Knights of Columbus to Sponsor a Free Throw Championship All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are encouraged to participate in the 2008 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. 6 T HE DEACON U NITY SAYS The Memory of a Visit After each mass as I watch God s people leave the church, I look out for the unfamiliar face, the visitor with a pleasant smile. As I waited a few Sundays back a young woman from Chicago walked up and commented on the wonderful celebration and music ministry and commented on the number of people and how close we all were to each other. She stayed to talked and watched as parishioners hugged and knew each other by name. She asked for my address because she wanted a copy of my homily but I thought there was something else she was not telling me. She wanted to bring that closeness that she felt to her parish. She was busting at the seams to tell her congregation about St. Marks. Yes we made a difference to someone and we did it all together. It must have been the joyful usher that stood in the middle isle with the dark mustache. Maybe it was how everyone hovered around our priest who stayed to greet everyone by name. Maybe I should had told her it was because of the name tags that the Knights wore that is how we knew each others names. What she saw was a community that prayed together and supported each other as Jesus had intended. When someone else can see that in us you know they are seeing that glimmer of Jesus in each of us. As Knights of Columbus you are a reflection of the parish community and you are part of what that young lady saw and what every person that visits St. Marks witnesses. As you wonder why do I support the Knights of Columbus just look at all the visitors that pass our way and how they see our community. You stand as Brothers committed to common principles of love for community and each other. That young lady will remember St. Marks and here is some of what she wrote. Hi Deacon Hernandez, I spoke with you after mass last Sunday. I was visiting from Chicago (actually NW Indiana) and was really moved by your homily. I was wondering if I could have you me a copy to share with my Pastor and some others. I was very impressed by the whole Mass and your parish community. The stewardship prayer and handout of suggestions of amount to increase weekly offering was extremely pertinent to our parish/school at this struggling time. I just wanted to let you know how much your parish moved me. Sincerely, K S 6

Well, 2007 was a good year and we look forward to 2008 and the opportunities and challenges it poses. It appears that word is slowly spreading in the SA community that we do have a very worthwhile rental facility for small and median size events be they for wedding receptions, anniversaries or business meetings. Our rentals have been steady and we look for another good year in Recently we were able to show three different football games on our new satellite dish and projector. The first game between UT and T A&M had a very sparse crowd probably attributable to the day after Thanksgiving when everyone was still busy enjoying family and just watching the game at home (That game was on local TV and not exclusive to NFL like the other two games). The second game was between the Green Bay Packers and the Cowboys. It did bring out a very loud and boisterous crowd and because the hall was being rented the next day the showing was in one of the larger rooms upstairs. Needless to say the Cowboys won. At least 50 people attended. And last nights game between the Cowboys and Carolina Panthers drew a crowd of about 25, somewhat less than expected probably because of the closeness to Christmas. We can show the Super Bowl too if there is any interest so me at elroytschirhart@sbcglobal.net and let me know if interested. This would be shown in the hall on the big screen with surround sound. We are short one committee member. The requirements to being a member are attending a meeting once a month and a willingness to work periodically as an event manager. Let either me or the Grand Knight, Luis Luis know if interested. Thanks to all who are involved in any way to make Christopher Hall a great place to meet. Do have a HAPPY, HEALTHY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR! For the committee, Elroy T., Chairman 7

8 HABITAT THIS IS SPECIAL This is special and important because our parish is now preparing to build our 13 th Habitat for Humanity house. It is special because there are 47 people who are living in the 12 houses already built by our parishioners. It is special because these 12 families could not have otherwise realized their dream of home ownership and the pride and dignity that comes with that achievement. And this is special to the yet un-named family who will own and live in the next house that our parish will sponsor and build. Here are the particulars: Construction starts on February 29, Commitment weekend will be on January 5 th and 6 th, Cost of sponsorship is $50,000 of which $11,000 is on Hand. (A $10,000 deposit has been made to secure the date) $39,000 balance needed. Prayers needed asking God s blessing for success. Review your calendars and your checkbook and be prepared To commit on January 5 th and 6 th. Members of our Council have been very generous in all previous builds. Approximately 25% of our construction volunteers are Knights and their families and a significant amount of the funding comes from our members. It is expected that this support will be even stronger when considering membership growth. February 29 th is an earlier start date than any previous build making for a compressed fund drive and other planning. SO PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CALENDARS FOR CONSTRUCTION VOLUN- TEERING. LIKEWISE PLEASE PLAN ON MAKING A GENEROUS FINANCIAL CONTRI- BUTION BEFORE FEBRUARY 29 TH. Advise teenagers of this opportunity to meet volunteer requirements for Confirmation, National Honor Society and other similar requirements. MAY GOD BLESS EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS MINISTRY. The second Prototype has finally arrived after much waiting. This is the badge you can purchase for your special Lady. It can also be purchased with only the Council jewel in place. The cost is about $17 depending on how many get ordered. To make sure that everyone is on the same page, Jan Williams is taking orders now. She had a few names before and received some more at the Christmas Party. If you have indicated in the past you wanted one, PLEASE reconfirm your order and let Jan know. She can be reached at tvteeth@sbcglobal.net or at work at janet.williams@utsa.edu You can also send an to Don Williams at dwilliams@stmarkevangelist.com We would like to place an order by the end of January. You can purchase the badge it with only the Council number on it if you are First, Second, and Third Degree members. Only 4th degree Knights and their wives will be able to order this beautiful badge with the 4th Degree logo. Plans are in the works for a possibility of a ladies auxiliary for our Council/Assembly and the name badges will be an important part of that. Even if that never materializes, the badge is still an important visual sign of the support our wives have for us. GET YOUR ORDER IN NOW. 8

9 THE ROOSTER CROWS December Chicken Burn Huge Success Congratulations to our brother Knights who worked so hard at the December Chicken Barbecue. It was a wonderful success. We prepared about 1200 halves of chickens and sold the last one just as the last parishioners from the last morning mass were leaving the big event at the gym. This was the first time we have attempted the full count of chickens for the reduced Sunday masses. I especially want to thank those who encouraged me as I was feeling my confidence slipping away that we would sell all of them. The members of this council never fail to lift my spirits and bring joy to my heart. I cannot express how exciting it is to see so many good, Catholic men enjoying each others company and working toward making other people s lives better whether it is our youth and scholarships, our several seminarians that we sponsor, or other folks deserving of assistance. You team leaders who hold this together are truly gifts from heaven! God bless you all. For those of you who could not help out and enjoy the camaraderie, the fact that you took the time to buy chickens is another way you showed your support. I know you will try and make one of our two remaining barbecues or other events whenever possible. There is no better way to get to know these good, honorable men we call Brother Knights than through an event like this. Speaking of that, our next world famous barbecue is by far the biggest one. Super Bowl XLII Sunday is February 3rd. With 33% more chickens being prepared and needing to be sold (1600 halves vs. the normal 1200) we will be really hustling and need everyone to participate. Please mark your calendar for sharing your talents that weekend and be sure to save some freezer space for several of those delicious chickens! Oh, Fernando, I promise to have plenty of refreshing cold drinks there. Which reminds me, please give a special thank you to those who bring sausage and other treats for us while we work. That type of thoughtfulness makes it even more special. Say, brothers, here is a 2008 New Year s resolution for you: proudly exercise your Catholic faith, get more involved in KC barbecues and other activities, and understand that our Blessed Mother Mary loves to see her children working for the good of her Son s Church! I hope you are blessed with a Joyful and Spiritual 2008! Mike Pattillo THE BUCK STOPS HERE ANNUAL DUES Your annual dues letter should have arrived! Please pay your dues in January.
