Our Bingo operations has had yet another record setting year with revenues continuing to grow a little more each year. With those proceeds, another $130,000 will have been paid down on the building during the fraternal year. We are on target to complete paying off the building in five years, saving 10 years on the note (and a whole lot of interest). Our loan officer did note that he was not making very much money off of us. Of course, I don t think we are hurting them any. We held fund raisers to support our religious vocations, and with the funds have supported three seminarians over the past year. I would like to thank those brothers who came forward with special donations to make that support possible. Our pro-life fund raiser provided $3,500 in funds to Guadalupe Home, Birthright, Majella Society and Allied Women s Center. Let us also not forget our internationally famous Chicken BBQ which again provided $5,000 in scholarships to the parish community. We have raised $6,000 for State Charities to be used to support Deaf Charities in San Antonio. And still to come, we have our golf tournament on the horizon which will be used to provide support to many of the parish ministry organizations. All of this will bring us in at over $150,000 for the fraternal year. In addition to the fund raisers, we have given back to our community through the continued support of programs such as the blood drives, Easter egg hunt, parish work crews, etc. We have endeavored to enrich the spiritual life of the community through our ongoing participation in the Saturday Rosary and by hosting 24 hour adoration. We have also celebrated together in fraternity at special events such as our Christmas Party and Valentine s Day dance. We have come together and helped to build up the People of God be lending our hearts, voices and hands to making this community and world a better place. Pope Benedict XVI opens his first Apostolic Exhortation, Sacramentum Caritatis (The Sacrament of Charity), with the statement, The sacrament of charity, the Holy Eucharist is the gift that Jesus Christ makes of himself, thus revealing to us God's infinite love for every man and woman. He explains that in giving up himself, his body and his blood, as a sacrifice for us all, Jesus committed the ultimate act of charity and revealed the truth about the love which is the very essence of God. This act of charity is the ultimate model for a charitable life. It is fitting then, that we begin each of meetings with the celebration of the Eucharist, receiving through Christ s charity the nourishment we need to begin our works of charity. And when you look at all the accomplishments above, the monies raised and given to worthy causes and the efforts put into building up our community, it all comes back to charity, our first pillar and reason for becoming a Knight of Columbus. You are through your works of charity continuing the mission and bringing Christ into the world as living sacraments to the truth. May God grant you the strength to continue your good work in the years ahead. I will always cherish my time with you and look forward to the fellowship we will share in the future. Your servant, Matt DeLozier Dig It Up! Story on page 8

Grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy Will and know that whatsoever You do, you do for the love of us. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. Footprints in the Sand One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord, You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me? The Lord replied, The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you. 3 The families of Oscar Lopez

This month we re looking at the jewel worn by our Trustees. The Trustees (three in number) oversee the financial transactions of the Council, review all bills Trustees and financial reports and audit the Council's financial records semi-annually. Their emblems, Crossed Key and Sword, indicate this financial authority and are worn on green ribbons. Trustees wear black robes trimmed in green. 7 SUQUIRES NITY The Squires will be holding their Officer Installation on Sunday, June 3, at 10:30 am in Christopher Hall. All parents and Knights are invited to join us as we celebrate our past year's accomplishments and prepare for 2007/2008. Make sure that you attend the 9:00 AM Mass since the celebration will run past 11:00 AM Officers: Chief Squire Deputy Chief Bursar Notary Mario Valdez Tommy Bossaller Joey Kissling Grayson Magnuson The other two officer positions, Marshall and Sentry, are appointed and will be announced at the June meeting along with the committee heads. Summer Paper Drive So far the paper recycling bins at St. Mark's have been a big success. For March and April combined you recycled 7 tons. That works out to saving 119 trees! From May through August there is a paper drive contest being sponsored by the recycling company Abitibi. If we can recycle 8 total tons the Columbian Squires we sponsor the bins will receive a $200 bonus! The summer months tend to be slower for recycling so we encourage everyone to please continue to support our efforts to help the environment by recycling their old newspapers, magazines, catalogs, mail and office paper in these bins. Thank you for your support. BLOOD DRIVE REPORT After location being changed several time, the blood drive came off pretty smoothly. It ended up being conducted in Shalom. The set up and take down went very smoothly. I would like to thank Bob Taillefer and Jesse Govea for their help above and beyond the call of duty. The blood bank has confirmed that the remaining blood drives this year will be held on August 26 and November 4. We had 46 donors step up less 12 who were either rejected or decided not to wait. There was a toal of 34 units of blood donated. Personally, I m disappointed that, as a parish, our size should have donated three times that many. YBIC Phil Brookes EDITORIAL is a large Council with almost 400 members. I know that not everyone can come to the meetings and that not everyone can participate in our many activities. However, there is a simple way that EVERYONE can play a part in our organization.. That way is to wear your name badge on Sundays at Church. Fr. Kevin has asked ALL Knights to do this. This is an easy way to show your support and brotherhood for your fellow Knights. Remember, one of our four pillars is UNITY. Don Williams 7

8 U NITY CHRISTOPHER HALL LANDSCAPING PROJECT Christopher Hall is now a year old and the landscaping project is proceeding nicely through the help of many volunteers. The installation of the sprinkler system which encompassed the front part of the lawn by the parking lot was completed earlier this year by Marvin Boroski, Herb Ehlinger, Leo Forget and Elroy Tschirhart. The sprinkler system installation for the side and back part of the grounds was done the week of May 13 th with the help of Herb Ehlinger, Frank Holzman, Cy bradshaw, Tony Gunderson, Elroy Tschirhart, Steve Hluchanek and Marvin Hadash. Landscape plants were also planted during this week. Pictured in the accompanying photos operating the trenching machine is Contractor Michael Wescoat and helper Steven Wentland, Jr., and some of the volunteers previously mentioned. Work crews were scheduled for the week ends of May 19 and 26 to remove and reposition rocks and put down solid sod grass. Once all the plantings are in place and the large debris are removed, a group will generally clean the grounds to complete the project. (top) The crew sizes up the situation. 13 THE HISTORY OF FLAG DAY P ATRIOTISM Flag Day, is a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation...one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon. The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'. On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day. Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as 'Flag Day', and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag. Fly Your Flag Proudly. 13 Two weeks later on May 8th, the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution unanimously endorsed the action of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames. As a result of the resolution, Dr. Edward Brooks, then Superintendent of Public Schools of Philadelphia, directed that Flag Day exercises be held on June 14, 1893 in Independence Square. School children were assembled, each carrying a small Flag, and patriotic songs were sung and addresses delivered. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children's celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating. Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself." Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

14 F INANCES U NITY How to Build a Bond Ladder Constructing a bond portfolio is like building a stock portfolio you need a strategy. There are many ways to design a bond portfolio, but one of the most popular is to build a bond ladder a bond portfolio with bonds evenly distributed across a number of maturities ranging from short term to long term. As the short-term bonds of the ladder mature, you use the proceeds to purchase new bonds for the longest maturity. By spreading investments over several maturities, investors can potentially protect themselves from changes in interest rates. When building a laddered portfolio, investors should consider how tall the ladder is in other words, how far out will the longest maturity be? Longer maturities usually provide higher yields, however they are also more volatile and subject to a greater degree of market risk. Investors may not be adequately compensated with additional yield for purchasing bonds with long maturities. Another important consideration is maturity frequency the space between the rungs. You can design the portfolio to have bonds maturing every six months, every year, etc., depending on your income needs. For example, if you want to create a 10-year ladder and have $100,000 to invest, a ladder could be structured with 10 rungs of $10,000 each, spaced 1 year apart. As an additional consideration, some bonds contain call provisions that allow the issuer to redeem the bonds prior to its stated maturity date. While these may offer higher yields than comparable noncallable bonds, you should have a minimal amount of callable securities in your portfolio because they can disrupt the maturity schedule of the laddered bond portfolio if they are indeed called before maturity. Investors also need to understand the credit quality of the bonds in their laddered portfolio. Many municipal bonds and some corporate bonds are insured with regard to the timely payment of principal and interest so investors can purchase insured bonds to enhance the credit quality of their portfolios. In addition, investors can develop a laddered portfolio that includes Treasury securities and bonds of government-sponsored enterprises that may help to eliminate credit risk from the portfolio. In addition to the factors already mentioned, the bonds selected for a laddered portfolio should provide investors with the highest after-tax returns possible within the investors risk parameters. For investors in higher income tax brackets, municipal bonds may provide exemption from federal and, where applicable, state income taxes, making them a good choice for taxable accounts. If a laddered portfolio is part of a qualified plan, the bonds should be invested in taxable bonds (e.g. Treasury securities, CDs, U.S. governmentsponsored agency securities, taxable municipal bonds or corporate bonds) to capitalize on the tax advantages of these types of plans. Bond laddering can be an effective strategy to match your investments with your individual income or investment needs. Talk to your financial consultant to see if your portfolio could benefit from building a bond ladder today. A.G. The support by our parishioners and several non parishioners has been nothing but fantastic. On some matters our statistical data is only estimated. The only item on which we keep very accurate records involves keeping track of financial support. More than 300 families contributed $58, (Funds in excess of $50,000 are being set aside in a parish account to be used next year). About 250 parishioners volunteered to work. Many worked more than once and several worked every Friday and Saturday!! If I mention names I will surely miss someone so I ll not take that risk. The total number of volunteer hours on the worksite exceeds We had help from businesses. Examples include Tex Liedtka s and Gerald Gaenslen companies. And from the Notre Dame Club led by Marvin Boroski. We had help from an exchange student from Germany and another from Russia. One of our parishioners who worked calls Albania his native land and two more claim West Africa as their place of origin!! BEING INVOLVED IN THIS MINISTRY GIVES BEV AND ME THE INSIGHT INTO WHAT A TERRIFIC PARISH WE ARE A PART OF!! As most of you are aware, we were able to build two houses this year because of the generosity of a parish family who received a significant inheritance and wanted to share. This family wishes to remain anonymous. We have been led by two Habitat House Leaders who, in my opinion, are the very best that the Habitat organization has. Clayton and Leon are professionals blessed with the patience and ability to work easily with other people. In the ten years that I have been associated with this ministry, I have found only one other house leader who measures up to these guys. And finally, the most important part. Our home owners are anxiously awaiting the day when they can move in. Laura Martinez and her two children and Tanya Garcia and her daughter just can t wait. Laura s son, Raymond, has been miffed because he is not yet 14, therefore, was not permitted to work. We will do landscaping on June 9 th and the house will be blessed and dedicated on June 16 th at 10:00 AM. Bishop Flanagan and Msgr Ryan will take part in the ceremony. Please come and enjoy this joyful occasion. A postscript note: Beverly has been hospitalized since May 18 th at BAMC. A few days ago a beautiful bouquet was delivered to her room. It was sent by Tanya and Laura and their families. These are families who really do not have this kind of discretionary money. I am including this information so that our parishioners can better appreciate the kindness demonstrated by the people whom we are helping.
