1 ST JOSEPH S CATHOLIC CHURCH, UPMINSTER PARISH NEWSLETTER For private circulation only Website: Facebook: St Joseph s Catholic Church Upminster@dioceseofbrentwood.org It Is Difficult to Give Up One s Life in Love The gospel shows us one of the most important moments in the life of Jesus, when he came to understand his mission, and he realises he will carry it out through humiliation and defeat. Jesus wants his disciples to accept the plan of the Father for him but they do not do so. Only after his death will they understand how the way of the cross was the way to life. The second reading continues with this gospel idea and invites all of us to die with Christ. The death we speak of here is the destruction of our selflessness. The first reading completes the message of the liturgy of today by presenting Abraham to us, the man who placed his trust in God and, because of this, was promised a country and numerous descendants. Christians who have the courage to place their trust in God, though in human eyes may appear to be failures, will in reality have numerous descendants, This weeks Readings First Reading: Gn 15: Sec. Children should be in the school hall for 9.45am. They will then attend 11am Mass with their catechists. Parental attendance at the 11am Mass is essential. RACE NIGHT: Upminster Catenians are hosting a Family Race on Saturday 30th March at St Peter's Catholic Centre, Front Lane, Cranham. 7:30pm All proceeds are going to St Joseph's School, with the aim of purchasing a defibrillator. 4 a ticket, a table of 10 35, Sponsor a Race 20, Name a horse 2. Bring your own drink and nibbles. The next Stations of the Cross will be here at St Joseph s Church on Friday 22nd March 2019 at 7.30pm. DIANA FAIRCHILD RIP: Please remember in your prayers the family and friends of Diana Fairchild who died recently. Diana s funeral will be held here at St Joseph s on Thursday 28th March 2019 at 11am. May Diana rest in the eternal peace of Christ.

3 RESTRUCTURING PARISH PARTNERSHIP: We now have a page on the Parish website dedicated to the Parish Partnership on it is a grid for all parishioners to view. Fr. John commissioned a small sub-group of the Parish Pastoral Council to draw up this document. The document endeavours to address the practical day-to-day issues that the partnership may encounter. It does not set out to be prescriptive but to be viewed as a starting point. More strategic issues such as which model to adopt (e.g. independent parishes: partnership or a super parish) are left to be addressed as the relationship of three parishes (English Martyrs, St. Mary Mother of God and St. Joseph s) evolves. Parishioners comments, advice on how this document could be enhanced would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. LENTEN PENITENTIAL SERVICE: We will be holding a Lenten Penitential service here at St Joseph s on Tuesday 9th April 2019 at 8pm. APF RED BOXES: Would parishioners please drop off the contents of their APF RED Boxes to the presbytery during office hours for counting. Please do not forget to include your names and addresses. Thank you. RIP CLARENCE BARRETT: Please remember in your prayers the family and friends of Clarence Barrett who died recently. Especially his wife Corinne and his children Erin and Aidan. Clarence s funeral will be held here at St Joseph s Church on Friday 22nd March 2019 at 12 noon. May Clarence rest in the eternal peace of Christ. SECOND COLLECTION LENT FAST DAY: Please note that we will be holding a second collection after all Masses this weekend 16th and 17th March 2019 in aid of CAFOD Lent Fast Day. Please give as generously as you can to this very worthy cause and if you are a registered gift aider in the parish please do not forget to use your special gift aid envelopes. 4 LiveSimply ST JOSEPH S KNITTING GROUP The Group has been very busy producing for the homeless, John Sparks will be distributing them to those in need. Thank you. Our next task is to provide Easter items for Queen s hospital to sell at their Annual Easter Charity event, to obtain equipment for the hospital that cannot be provided by the NHS. Thanks to all members who are working from home and those who have kindly donated wool, your help has enabled us to continue our work. Our next meeting will be on 18 th March at in the social club. New members always welcomed to join our friendly group. Your generosity has enabled them to help many families in need. Live Simply Magazine We are hoping to produce this magazine at the end of the summer. Please send in news of what you would like to share with other parishioners such as: praying for Live Simply Ideals, recycling, planting a nature friendly garden, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, showing solidarity with those in need. We welcome articles from our younger parishioners. We are also looking for healthy recipes, ideas for keeping fit and short articles about any charity work which you may do. SPONSORED SLEEPOUT: A group from the Hornchurch and Upminster Parish Partnership is taking part in the sponsored sleepout at Walsingham House, Abbotswick on Friday 12 th April. Next weekend s coffee morning will be hosted by our church flower arrangers. Parish Prayer Service A warm welcome is extended to everyone to join together as a community to pray together on Monday 18 th March 8pm St. Joseph s Church. It is only through prayer that we come to know both who God is and who we are. When we pray together, either silently or using the Word of God, or in sharing our deepest longings and concerns with one another, or in joining together in worship and praise, we help, encourage and support one another to journey on (from the Vision document).
