2 FROM BATH AND WELLS Being bishop in Somerset has been the greatest privilege of my life The house isn t quite filled with boxes, nor the removal van ordered, but there is a sense of departure coming over us as I write this last magazine article during my time as Bishop of Bath and Wells. Being bishop in Somerset has been the greatest privilege of my life. I have enjoyed the wide and varied visits to communities, churches and institutions, where so many people are changing lives for good. When I am asked what the high points have been, there are so many it is almost invidious to compare. However, I think the early Changing Lives roadshows when over 6,000 people came out over 19 nights was encouraging and, I hope, inspiring. In 2009 the walk around the diocese Peter s Progress was a delight; meeting folk in their work and play in places as varied as a children s hospice, Avonmouth Docks, the farms of Exmoor, military bases, schools, a travellers camp, and even going down Swildons Pot a cave on the Mendips. But mostly it has been in the well come that I have received in each of the many parishes that I have visited, often with Bishop Peter of Taunton on our Deanery Visits. Working with Archdeacons and the staff team too has been a joy and a delight. So thank you. Now it is time to say fare well. When we bid someone well come, we hope they will bring us health and wholeness what the bible calls salvation. I hope that in the various well comes that we have experienced, something of that wholeness and healing Christ wants us to experience has been found. Now in saying fare well the emphasis is on wishing the wholeness and healing will continue to enable each and every one of us to fare well continuing in the love and hope of God, and our neighbour. So thank you for the well come and now I bid you fare well God be with you. Good bye. Farewell to Bishop Peter Price AN INVITATION TO BISHOP PETER S RETIREMENT SERVICE AND PARTY Saturday 22 June 2013 Wells Cathedral and Cathedral Green Parishioners across the Diocese of Bath & Wells are invited to a farewell service for the Rt Revd Peter Price, Bishop of Bath & Wells who retires at the end of June. The service in Wells Cathedral will start at 2pm and will be open to all as an opportunity to express our thanks and say our farewells. It is very likely that the Cathedral will be full for the service and we may even need to spill out onto Cathedral Green. Bring a picnic and join us after the service for a party on Cathedral Green. 3 FROM BATH & WELLS 2 FROM THE RECTORY 3 PARISH CHURCH NEWS 4 All churches 4 Cucklington 4 Charlton Musgrove 4-5 Stoke Trister with Bayford 5 Y E L L O W P A G E S Directory,Church Services Events & Diary Dates, Websites & Copy Information VILLAGE NOTICES: 5-6 Charlton Musgrove 7-8 Stoke Trister/Bayford 8 Cucklington 9-10 Arthur Morison Hall 10 COUNCIL NEWS 10 Stoke Trister with Bayford Parish Council 10 Bank Holidays: Rubbish Collection 10 LOCAL PRODUCE & SERVICES FROM THE RECTORY As I write there are, at last, Signs of Spring!!! Sunshine with a hint of warmth gives us a memory of summer sunshine, providing glimmers of hope, against the memories of rain and heavy skies. You might have forgotten your chocolate eggs but in Church, Easter lasts for seven weeks and each Sunday we read the stories that have been handed down from that first community of Jesus students (because that is what a disciple was) of unsettling meetings with the man who had been crucified, appearing behind locked doors with words of peace. He appeared to people walking out of Jerusalem and talked with them all the way home to the village in which they lived. He appeared on the lakeside up in the north in Galilee and cooked them breakfast with the fish they had freshly caught. All unsettling inconclusive meetings: no proofs that would stand up forever against scepticism and disbelief. But like the spring sunshine, these unsettling glimpses were enough to awaken hope, hope for a different way. Enough for them, enough for them to know, beyond any doubt, that they had been taken by surprise by the man who had been raised from the dead. These meetings were enough to send them out not only with messages of hope, that forgiveness is a better way than hardheartedness, love is a better way than hate, humility is a better way than arrogance, these meetings were enough to enable them to live the message they passed on, showing not just telling. Those who follow them rarely live up to their example, but that is what we aspire to as modern day followers of Jesus, the man who was raised from the dead. Day by day we want to learn to live our message of hope, to put to death in us all that stops us, our families, our communities and ultimately our world from flourishing and to open ourselves to forgiveness and forgiving, to kindness and gentleness, to humility and attentiveness to the needs of others. It s a battle but this is truly the only one worth fighting. Jo 3

4 P A R I S H C H U R C H N E W S ST LAWRENCE, CUCKLINGTON Karen Dunford Church Wardens Brian Trueman Thanks to Vivien for a really interesting talk on 12 th April, superbly illustrated, on Living in Africa the 1950s, which raised almost 200 for Church funds. ST STEPHEN S AND ST JOHN S, CHARLTON MUSGROVE Church Wardens: Veronica White and Jonathan Hand At the Annual Parish Meeting we realized there are many people who help and support the churches but are seldom thanked publicly. So now we would like to show our appreciation, and thank: Claude Teague who daily locks and unlocks the door at St. Stephens, so that it is always there for a quiet visit; and Jeremy Sellick who does the same at St John s; Claude and Barrie White are often to be seen fixing things notice boards, lights, loose floorboards, always ready and willing to use their skills in a practical way; Matthew Harden has given hours of his time cutting back and tidying trees in the churchyards; Pete Furneaux has cut the grass at St Johns, and John Rose has been mowing St. Stephen s churchyard. To them all a huge thank you. Many thanks to the people who gave our churches a special Easter spring clean, and arranged the flowers to make them look so festive. And thank you to the people who have joined the rota to clean the churches and put flowers there throughout the year. The 40 lilies, which had been individually sponsored in memory of people who have died, have been looking beautiful. Many thanks to Georgie Woods of Common Farm Flowers who provided them. The idea of sponsoring flowers in memory of a loved one was new to us this Easter, but it has been popular, and could be extended to other times of year. If we wished to mark an anniversary or birthday of someone who has died and would like to have flowers in church, and maybe their name mentioned in the prayers, that could be arranged by speaking to one of the Churchwardens. 4

5 At the Rogation Sunday service on 5 th May at Higher Stavordale Farm Jo will be christening Tom and Jenny Kimber s little son Gilbert. St John s Church has been closed for the organ s restoration but we very much hope to be able to hold the service there at the beginning of June, when we will celebrate the results of the work. Until this is completed the door will be kept locked, but a key will be available from Veronica White (32928) or Jeremy Sellick (32174) if needed. Alan Lyall Grant Church Wardens Nigel Noble THE BELLS AT St ANDREW'S CHURCH, STOKE TRISTER A recent inspection has revealed the need to conduct costly repairs to the bell fittings and one of the bells. The condition of one of the fittings is such that all ringing must cease until the repairs have been carried out. The PCC will be considering various options at its meeting on 22 nd April 2013 and will communicate its decision as soon as possible afterwards. This will be supplemented by a more detailed article in the June edition of Village News. Whilst it is sad that our bells cannot be rung for several weeks we are most grateful for the offers of support that have been forthcoming in the past week or so. VILLAGE NOTICES FOR SALE One 7' (approx) church pew from St John's church. 9 Arthur Morison Memorial Hall (Cucklington and Stoke Trister with Bayford) Coffee Morning. The next of the very successful coffee mornings in the Arthur Morison Memorial Hall will be on Saturday 4 th May, starting at 10 am. Thank you A huge, but belated (with many apologies!) thank you is due to Australian Olympic Three Day Event Riders Sam Griffiths and Christopher Burton, who treated a 90 strong audience, some of whom had come from as far as Exeter and Salisbury, to a fascinating talk in the Arthur Morison Memorial Hall on the evening of 15 th February. The evening, which also included a raffle for some generously donated prizes, raised almost 1400 for St. Lawrence Church. Sam and his wife Lucy had only just celebrated the birth of their first baby Oliver, but clearly juggling riding several horses a day, teaching, changing nappies, and the inevitable sleepless nights hadn t affected Sam s fluent and often humorous anecdotes of life on the International Event Circuit, and their lead up to and experiences at the London 2012 Olympics. Many thanks also to Gordon Czapiewski for his help with the technical side, to Jane Lock for her delicious sandwiches, and to those ladies who consistently provide refreshments for our talks in the hall. And thanks also to Vivien for a really interesting talk on 12 th April, superbly illustrated, on Living in Africa the 1950s. And it raised almost 200 for Church funds! CUCKLINGTON Cucklington Plant Sale: Saturday 18 th May at 2.30 pm at Charters Stables, Long Hill - with Teas and Cake Stall. The sale is moving a few hundred metres down the hill this year, but will still offer a vast range of plants for the vegetable garden, as well as annuals, shrubs, climbers and perennials. After the exhaustion of buying your plants, enjoy a delicious cream tea or full tea with sandwiches, cakes and other scrumptious treats to give you the energy to go and plant your bargains. Looking to fill a blank wall space!? Over twenty five years I have accumulated a selection of my own oils and watercolours and these will be on sale at Charters, Cucklington between 18 th and 25 th May. Proceeds/donations will be shared between Cucklington Church repairs and a grandson s sponsored school trip to Nepal to assist at a local school and to take part in a trek towards Mount Everest.
