2 News from Around the Village Village Coffee and Chat Mornings It was great to see so many villagers attending the Christmas Lunch in December. Thank you to everyone for continuing to support the coffee mornings. We have just supported three more local charities - Mind York, Askham Bryan Village Hall and Askham Bryan Brownies. Welcome to new villagers and we hope you will be able to join us on the third Wednesday in the month 10am to 12 noon. Jennifer Smith writes Coffee Morning Dates Wed 16th Mar Wed 20th Apr Wed 18th May A big Thank you Roger Thompson (Chairman of the Playground Association) writes Askham Bryan Playground Association are very grateful to both David and Jo Hartley who have donated 130 from the profits of the Gilbert and Sullivan evening last November to the Association. The results of their not inconsiderable efforts will fund repairs to the playground equipment over the course of the Spring. Thank you David and Jo. Bank Holiday Fayre and Plant Sale in aid of the village hall Monday 30th May 2016 ASKHAM BRYAN VILLAGE HALL 10am to 1pm!!! Come and buy your bedding plants!!! We then of course enjoyed tasting them all! We hope to go to one of his workshops this year. We started the new year with a lunch at Hawkhills and a marvellous talk by Jean Harrod who used to be a British Consul in various overseas countries. We also enjoyed an excellent meal at the Ashfield Restaurant at York College. This month members are attending a forensic science evening at Copmanthorpe. Monica has now finished our Centenary Year Book and many thanks go to her for all her hours of work compiling it. We hope to have it on show at various events. 4 Funeral Services Church News Ann Manning reports Mary Mountain - A funeral service, taken by the Revd Alan Hughes at Askham Bryan, was held on 18 th January for Mary Mountain aged 95. Mary was born and brought up here but then moved to Scarborough and for the last 25 years lived at Copmanthorpe near her family. She served in the Land Army where she became a proficient mechanic and tractor driver which stood her in good stead all her life! She was a keen follower of sport, very up-to-date with all forms of IT and a witty and generous lady. Donations in her memory have been sent to Macmillan Cancer Support. Dawn Porter - A Celebration for the Life of Dawn Porter, who died in December aged 97, was taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford at Askham Bryan on 1 st February. A tribute given by her son told of a very varied and interesting life. Her Grandson, Simon Pilcher, gave the bible reading and grandson, Ross Bryan, read a poem. Her daughter, Jacqui Bryan, arranged the beautiful flowers in her memory. The retiring collection is being divided between Great Ormand Street Hospital and St Nicholas Church, Askham Bryan. Arthur Blacker - A funeral service in loving memory of Arthur Blacker, who died aged 88, was taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford and held at St Andrews, Bishopthorpe on February 8th. Born at Healaugh he was 2 years old when the family moved to Bishopthorpe where he remained until he and Nancy moved to Askham Bryan. Arthur was a well-known figure in the farming community and a keen golfer. He is survived by his wife Nancy, their 3 sons, their families and grandchildren. Donations in his memory are being divided between St Andrews Church, Bishopthorpe and St Leonards Hospice. St Crux fundraiser for the church Thursday June 2nd 10am to 4pm Please consider lending a hand on a stall, serving teas or washing up. Gifts of cakes, biscuits, jams, chutneys, fresh produce, plants, books and bric-abrac are vital to the success of the day. We particularly need help setting up from 8.30am and clearing up at the end of the day at 3.30pm. 6 Dear Friends A Word from Our Vicar As I write, we are approaching the season of Lent. Traditionally Lent is a time when we can reflect on our lives and focus more clearly on our relationship with God and others. Many people choose to give something up or, better still take something up. This is not something exclusive to the church, but increasingly across society. What people choose to do in Lent is often called a discipline, which of course is not in the sense of being punished for misbehaving, but rather training in a particular way. However, it may feel like a punishment, when we find it hard to get on without the particular vice we enjoy. Chocolate comes to mind! I think it is better to think of Lenten disciplines in the sense that the word is used in education. It is often said of certain subjects that they are disciplines. Perhaps this is because they take determination and commitment, and although at the time may seem tough, lead to a real sense of achievement and betters us as people. Hopefully this can lead to benefits for others also. With that in mind I want to encourage us all to think about using Lent to discipline ourselves, increase our commitment and become better people. That is perhaps why more and more people take something up rather than give something up. By the time you read this, we will be well into Lent, but while the season of Lent may be an encouragement to take up a discipline, perhaps that in itself is not necessarily something that can only be done in Lent?
