2 Services today, 8 April 8 am 9.30 am Collect Readings [BCP] Holy Communion Readings: p. 136 Parish Communion with DIY crèche, Scramblers, Climbers, Explorers, Destination and Transition Order of service in yellow booklet God of life, source of all faith, through the waters of baptism you have raised us up in Jesus and given us life that endures. Day by day refine our faith, that we who have not seen the Christ may truly confess him as our Lord and God, and share the blessedness of those who believe. Grant this through Jesus Christ, the resurrection and the life. Amen. Acts 4: [p. 538] Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. John 20: [p. 539] When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.

3 11.15 am Readings A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. 4 An Easter message from Peter Seal on our website Resurrection is about new life. What s really important about Jesus resurrection is that it was not resuscitation. Jesus was truly dead, and God raised him to new life in some way we can never fully understand (we re not meant to!). It may be that thinking about new life is the most helpful way to make sense of Jesus resurrection. He lived again, and continues to live, but in a new way. The gospel stories of his appearances to his disciples and many others make this clear. He was in some way recognisable as the person they had known and loved, but he was also different. I think the questions I am left with go something like this: What sort of new life do I need? What sort of new life does the world need? What sort of new life do the people I love need? We can offer these questions as prayers and trust that God will show us what the answers can be. In my experience God usually responds to our prayers by coming back to us suggesting some sort of action we then need to take! This line from Mary Oliver, a contemporary poet, has stayed with me. She writes: Tell me what you want to do with your one wild and precious life. Every good wish this Easter season, which lasts for 50 days and takes us to the great feast of Pentecost.
