3 Magazine article November 2016 Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot This is a month of memories, not only the violent ones such as Guy Fawkes and those that remind us of the horror of war but also more personal ones no doubt. I remember my dad whose birthday falls in November but who died 11 years ago at almost 98. I remember him as someone who taught me what it meant to say sorry, to be hospitable, and to faithfully give his all to God. He wasn t a man of many words, preferring a back seat yet providing the stability and solidity of one who is passionate about his faith. Who have been the influences on your life? Who do you remember as someone who has stirred your faith into being? Who has encouraged you to grow in your gifts and discipleship? Who has prayed for you? As we develop our diocesan strategy we are seeking to grow confident disciples who can live and tell the stories of their faith, who will be influencers and encouragers of the next generation. That s all of us folks! You may feel that your part is small or insignificant but you have no idea how something you may say or do will impact on another. This month make it one where you look to encourage someone into a deeper understanding of who they are in God s great scheme. Perhaps there s someone you know who needs to know God really loves them. Or that they are particularly good at something and should think about doing more of it. Perhaps they have a ministry they are not even aware of but you could affirm it. Be part of their story of discovery and growth! Bishop Ruth 3
4 From the Organ Bench November 2016 A festival of a saint, or All Saints (1 November), is a good excuse to sing not only For all the saints but also a very fine hymn by Isaac Watts ( ): Give us the wings of faith to rise Within the veil, and see The saints above, how great their joys, How bright their glories be. He was born into a family of what were then called Dissenters, and eventually became a pastor in a Nonconformist chapel in the City of London. Ill-health in his 30s caused him to delegate much of his work to an assistant, but he was given a home by the family of Sir Thomas Abney, a member of his congregation, and he survived for another 40 years. At a young age he complained to his father that hymns were dull and repetitive, to which his father replied Then write something better. He did. Like most Christians, Isaac Watts had his doubts: They wrestled hard, as we do now, With sins and doubts and fears..but he overcame them, and if his pastoral ministry may have lacked energy, his poetic Muse amply compensated for it. He wrote over 700 hymns, including some of our best-loved (O God, our help in ages past, Jesus shall reign where er the sun, and When I survey the wondrous Cross). Give us the wings of faith is for some reason set in almost all hymn-books to the same exceptionally dull tune, and I like to think that Isaac Watts would have approved of the soaring Victorian melody that is usually set to another hymn but perfectly fits the zeal and wonderment of Watts s words. It s called Beatitudo and is the work of John Bacchus Dykes ( ) who featured in this column last month. Dykes was also a priest, rather more actively than Isaac Watts, and he was precentor of Durham Cathedral and subsequently Vicar of St. Oswald s Church in the same city. Almost as prolific in his way as Isaac Watts over a shorter life, he composed over 300 hymn-tunes, many of which we still sing today (for example the tunes to Holy, Holy, Holy, The King of love and Eternal Father). Like the saints that he celebrated, Isaac Watts followed Jesus s example and his reward is that his words live on down the ages. They marked the footsteps that he trod, His zeal inspired their breast, And, following their incarnate God, They reached the promised rest. David Duvall 4

9 VILLAGE VIEW CHARLTON MUSGROVE Website Editor: Judy Nathan Church Wardens: Veronica White Jonathan Hand The Church St Stephen s And St John s Harvest in Charlton Musgrove was celebrated in fine style. The Rev Ian Coomber took the happy Thanksgiving Service in a full and well-decorated St Stephens Church. Many thanks to Veronica and her team for the lovely flowers, most of which were taken down to the Memorial Hall to make it festive for the Harvest Supper. Kind people had cooked delicious pies and puddings, so thank you to them too, with a special mention of Declan Farrell who provided us with an enormous and very tasty harvest loaf. Thanks to the persuasive skill of Bex Kimber-Danger, our very own auctioneer, 800 was the total sum wet Thad raised to split between the charity Practical Action and the village churches. Claude Teague and Barry White have been working (under the instruction of our Church Architect) to prop up the arch in the north aisle of St Stephens where a new crack has appeared. They are the original flying butresses - propping the church from outside. Many thanks to them both it is very much appreciated. 13 Your Parochial Church Council (PCC) Needs You! Stoke Trister with Bayford needs new PCC members to keep it open. The PCC works to look after the Church and oversee the admin required. We need people like you who wish to ensure our parish church remains part of our community even if you do not wish to attend services. There are only 3 meetings a year and you can choose to get involved in fund raising e.g. The Christmas and Summer fayre's or some of the record keeping. But this is up to you. We welcome any time you feel you can commit. If you want to find out more please contact Angela Baker on or Nigel Noble on A vacancy has occurred on the the Parish Council. If you are interested please call the Clerk on The Parish Council will be laying a wreath at St Andrews Church at 11 oclock on 11 November Everyone welcome. Bayford Village Hall Village News; Nov 16 edition Update Fund raising for the project is continuing. Local traders and businesses have been very generous in their help, and a recently received National Lottery grant has helped to reduce the shortfall, but approximately 8,000 is still needed to fit out a fully functioning kitchen, along with tables, chairs, etc and which will make the difference to the community. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Mrs Niru Linsley at nirulinsley59@sky.com. The renovation work is progressing: the new porch has been built, and decoration work on the main body of the Hall has started. A new floor will be laid within the next couple of weeks. The refreshment area will provide a kitchen facility with the eventual capability to serve prepared meals, tea and coffee, and snacks. The Hall will be officially opened on Saturday 10th December at am. All are very welcome to attend. Sponsors of the project will be invited and seasonal refreshments will be served. The village coffee mornings and Bridge Club are already in the calendar for 2017, and a variety of other activities has been suggested exercise classes, quiz evenings, a lunch club, and art exhibitions to name but a few. The Hall is also available for private hire. Booking rates for members of the Parish are 15 per session (morning, afternoon, evening), or 30 per day, and for non-parish members 30 per session, 60 per day. If you would like to run an activity, or make a booking, please contact Mrs Niru Linsley at nirulinsley59@sky.com or phone
