1 It all began in 2015, when Annie and I came to Camp Pendleton to attend, and to witness, the wedding of our younger daughter, Elizabeth and her husband now of two plus years, Erik. The ceremony was magnificent and the fellowship together with family for this joyous event, a treasured memory. Topping off that weekend of God s amazing grace and eternal love was a visit to Our Savior s Lutheran Church, or as we now call it, the Loving Lutheran Church on the Hill. You see, Pastor Jeff was our Pastor at Silverdale Lutheran Church in Washington State when we lived there in the late 1990 s. Elizabeth had enjoyed the youth group at SLC while "PJ" as we called him was the Pastor for the youth program. The wedding, and visiting with Pastor Jeff, and worshipping at OSLC, was such a blessing to Annie and me. The following year Annie and I came to San Clemente to visit Libby and Eric and on that Sunday: I preached a sermon at OSLC...bet you don t remember, that s ok. The point is that. On that Sunday, Pastor Jeff asked me if I would consider being your sabbatical supply pastor in 2017; I said I would probably not be able to do that since I am a 12 month employee at Newberry College where I am the Campus Pastor and Director of Church Relations. Annie and I prayed about the possibility of serving with all of you, we spoke with my College President, who spoke with our Board of Trustees about my request, and they said, "yes, you may take a leave of absence for the summer of 2017, but, you must return." And so, here we are Annie and I arrived 9 May and I attended an OSLC Church Council meeting with Pastor Jeff. The next morning with Pastor Jeff to introduce me; we attended chapel with the teachers and the children of OSLS, and I was hooked. For Annie and me, meeting all of you and participating in worship, fellowship, school and church, Confirmation and Choir, OWLs and Bible Studies and Council Meetings, and youth group, and the list goes on and on; we fell in love with you instantly. Here at Faithful Lutheran Church on the Hill you shine the Light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ brightly. You are a blessing to one another and a blessing to your neighborhoods and communities where you live and work. You are people named, claimed, forgiven, called and sent to be the people of God in this place, that you might serve God s people all around you. You are talented, loving and open to the Word of the Lord and His ongoing mission. There are so many opportunities waiting for you to explore serving God s people in new ways and with Christian passion. Remember that God s call to serve always makes us a bit uncomfortable...and that is ok, because His Holy Spirit is always with us to walk with us and shine through us. Be bold, good people of Gracious Lutheran Church on the Hill. You are a blessing in so many ways. Annie and I are here for a few more weeks, and, then we will return to Newberry College, and family in Louisville. We are forever changed because of your Christian love and witness, for that we are truly thankful, and Praise God for this summer together. 3 July 2017 These past couple weeks, I have spoken on the phone to no fewer than a dozen of our church members about an illness involving one of our sisters in Christ. This particular member is a lifelong believer and a lover of music. One of the things I share with her is a love for our old hymns. During these trying times, the words of some of our classic hymns have given this saint, myself and numerous believers throughout the ages strength, hope and faith. Here are some phrases from our classic hymns and what they mean to me today: While life s dark maze I tread and griefs around me spread, be thou my guide: LBW 479, My Faith Looks Up to Thee, vs. 3. There are things in my life that I just don t know how to handle. The good news is, GOD DOES! This prayer reminds me that I just need to let God be God and follow Him. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? In his arms he ll take and shield you, You will find a solace there. LBW 439, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, vs. 3 Although I often put on a strong, confident face to the world, I have found that I am only as strong as my faith. God is all powerful and will protect me from whatever this world throws at me. I don t need to worry about anything. Still your children wander homeless; Still the hungry cry for bread; Still the captives long for freedom; Still in grief we mourn our dead. As you, Lord, in deep compassion healed the sick and freed the soul, by your Spirit send your power to our world to make it whole. LBW 423, Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service, vs. 2. Watching the news, listening to the radio, reading the paper; there is much bad news in the world. It would be easy to be discouraged. But, God s Spirit is here, with us, in our world, and has the power to make us all whole. And I have the ability to help, if only a little bit, by donating to FAM, visiting those who need assurance and???? Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! With One Voice 771, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, vs. 3. These words pretty much sum up the good news! These are some of the classic hymns that have moved and inspired me. In one of Pastor Ernie s recent blog posts, he wrote about how the lyrics of a contemporary praise song that we have been singing at our Bold service move him to tears. In the words of Martin Luther, Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us. Old music/new music, enjoy this wonderful gift from God. In His Service Karen Skipper, Director of Music Here is a Coffee with Jesus cartoon with words of wisdom from a classic hymn 3

4 Youth and Children s Page by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministries Here s the cure for the Summertime Blues and here we are again, summertime!there are many events and activities taking place this summer with the youth of Our Savior s and it is going to be great! We have already welcomed our new Sixth graders into the middle school group with our annual Welcome new Sixlet BBQ and will be doing the same with our high schoolers very soon. The High Schoolers will once again take part in the Western States Youth Gathering held on the campus of Cal Lutheran University. We will be partnering with the youth from Community Lutheran Church in Rancho Santa Margarita (and about 700 other teens from the western United States) for the gathering and hope to make strong connections during our time together. Extreme Week August 14-16, 2017 (Monday-Wednesday) All Youth & Families are welcome to join us for the crazy fun of EXTREME WEEK!
