1 The Messenger ~ September 2014 Our Savior s Lutheran Church and School San Clemente, California Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve Shark Week and Coincidences we call it providence! I admit to you and all my brothers and sisters that I look forward to Shark Week on the Discovery channel. If you don t know what Shark Week is, then just imagine a week long documentary on everything you ever wanted to know about sharks; where they are, what they eat, different species and yes the gratuitous shark attack videos with plenty of displaced flesh and body parts. Maybe because we live right here on the Ocean or maybe it s just a way to safely confront some deep seated anxiety and fears but I like Shark week. And conveniently I m usually on vacation when it comes on so I get plenty of opportunities to indulge. This year was kind of special though. I don t know if you remember or not, but there was a sighting of a pretty big Great White Shark right off the San Clemente pier which lead to the closing of several beaches for a few hours in the morning. When did that shark appear? That s right, day 1 of shark week! Fluke? Expert marketing? Guy dressed up in a shark suit being paid by the Discovery channel? Of course I m sure it s just a coincidence, but of all the 365 days for that shark to show up it certainly picked a good one. This got me thinking about something called Providence. Providence isn t something that Lutheran pastors or theologians think about very much it s more of a Catholic or Reformed/Calvinist kind of topic. That being said even a Lutheran could learn a bit by studying the concept. At its base it refers to the idea that God provides protection or spiritual care as we go about our lives. It is close to the idea of fate but Providence has more intentionality behind it. At its fullest Providence looks for the intervention of God in our world. Some folks like to think about General Providence, which is God s basic hand in creation and maintaining the laws of the universe and Special Providence, which is God breaking into the mundane and actually making things happen. Of course the trouble with Providence is that it seems awfully close to coincidence. Take our Great White visitor to San Clemente. Was it providence and thus showing that God not only has a great sense of humor but also enjoys the Discovery channel or was it coincidence? Was it Providence that sent a rain storm to save a dying woman from thirst, or was it coincidence? Or to make it even murkier than it already is, can God (read here Providence) be at work in coincidence? I imagine that this ultimately comes down to faith. The person of faith is going to see God s hand at work, even if it seems hidden; while the person without faith is simply going to thank her lucky stars and chalk one up for the universe which coincidentally dealt her a winning hand exactly when she needed it. The person of faith is going to be renewed and in awe at how it is that God still comes to the aid and comfort of God s people; while the person without faith is going to be renewed and in awe at how sometimes things just work out. I m going to reveal my hand here, and I suspect you already know where I stand, I believe that God can and does occasionally interfere in the world so yes sign me up for Providence. That being said, I also think that there are many wonderful things that happen which are not the direct result of God interfering, but the indirect result of God loving. What is this you say? I think love is a force at work his continued on page 2

2 continued from page 1 in the universe as strong and as predictable as gravity. I think that we often coincidentally share this love with one another and with our world and that these acts of love are by nature coincidental, but had their beginning in an intentional act of Providence. Hang with me here I m almost done! I don t know when or how or even if God will intentionally break into any given situation and thus show God s providence at a precise and given moment in time. But I do believe that God has broken into the world in the person of Jesus Christ and has shown the world that God is love and that this love permeates and resonates in the world and in the people who have experienced it. And when this love comes to me, when I experience the goodness of creation and life how it was meant to be; well in a sense whether it s come by chance or sent by God it s all providential. Peace! Pastor Jeff Gaza Humanitarian Assistance The Situation: It has been a frightening time in the Middle East. More than 1,800 people have been killed and nearly 10,000 injured with most of the victims reported to be civilians and children. Our Response: Our brothers and sisters in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land have asked for our help. One way Lutheran Disaster Response responding is through Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem, a place that provides medical services regardless of race, gender, religious or political affiliation. Working with The Lutheran World Federation, the ELCA has committed an initial $100,000 to Augusta Victoria Hospital for assistance in this humanitarian response. Medical professionals from Augusta Victoria Hospital are deployed in Gaza and are providing specialized care, medications and supplies to triage and treat patients. Patients with cancer and chronic illness are being moved from Gaza to Augusta Victoria to avoid deterioration of their health during the war and to relieve beds in Gaza for injured patients. In addition to care, their medical professionals are providing psychosocial support to patients who have been evacuated from Gaza. 2 July 2014 Highlights The Chancel furniture has been refinished and looks great! Karen Coffee reported that the year-end report showed a budget surplus. The council voted unanimously that the Church should tithe (10%) of the surplus to the ELCA. Teacher installation will be at the services on Rally Day, September 7th. Sunday School will begin September 14th. Sunday School will be held during both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. 4 September 2014 ~ Music Notes Keeping It Fresh/Energized I would like to express a sincere THANK YOU to all our wonderful musicians who used their gifts in worship this summer. September is now here and our fall programming is about to begin. If you have ever thought about using your God given musical talents to serve Him, now is the time! Here are some opportunities for participation in music ministry at Our Savior s: Celebration Singers The Adult Choir (8th grade and older) meets on Wednesday evenings in the Founders Room at 6:30pm, immediately after Bible Study. This group provides music for our 10:30pm worship service. You do not need to read music to participate. This group is directed by Karen Skipper, Director of Music. Jubilee Bells our Bell Choir director, Sharon Guilliams, says that if you know your right hand from your left and can count to 4, you can ring bells. This group meets on Sunday mornings at 9:40am in Room 11. Vocal Team/ Band we are always looking for musicians who sing, play guitar, percussion, wind or string instruments, or????? Call the church office if you have a gift for making music vocally or on an instrument. We would be happy to audition you. Don t forget to stop by the and Music booth on Rally Day. We will have music making fun for all ages. Make a joyful noise! See you at church! In His Service Karen Skipper, Director of Music As a church musician, responsible for choosing music, preparing music and providing musical offerings to God for 30 years (as a soloist and as a director), you may wonder how is it that I don t get bored or burnt out. Well besides the grace of God both during the good and trying times, and the flexibility of the bells, it comes down to the people that have touched me and those I have been able to touch. There have been several people that have touched my heart and reenergized a sometimes weary soul throughout the years. Bell ringing has provided my best friends, great delight when a challenging piece goes well, an escape for a person going through a painful divorce, a place for children that otherwise did not fit anywhere to belong, a place for parent and child to bond in a common activity, and a means to a deeper faith for me; to name just a few. I tell people it is how interdependent the bell ringers are on one another that leads to the close friendships, but truth be told, it just happens. Bell people are loving and caring people, and loving and caring people usually make the best bell people. We all make mistakes in our musical offerings and make mistakes in life, but in bells we know that we ALL make mistakes and know that the music goes on. I write this to encourage each of you to consider being a part of the Handbell Ministry. There are multiple ways to support the ministry: 1) Join Jubilee Bells that rehearses in between the services (you don t have to read music or be able to carry a tune); 2) If you are a 3rd- 5th grader at the school, join the after school enrichment program on Fridays; 3) If you have a musical background and would like a challenge, consider joining the San Clemente Community Handbell Choir that rehearses on Monday evenings. Any proceeds that choir receives go directly to FAM; 4) Pray for the ministry. At times there are obstacles that come up and get me down, but it is with God that we keep going with a renewed vigor; and/or 5) Thank those that do participate in the ministry. Without the members of the choirs there would be no ministry. Ringing to His Glory Sharon Guilliams 4

5 Youth and Children s Ministry by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministries It s Quiet Too Quiet There is a strange phenomenon that takes place here at Our Savior s in June, the campus sound level goes from pretty darn loud to crickets and tumbleweeds. This does not mean that there is nothing going on here; it s just that with school out we are missing the daily activity of a couple of hundred kids doing kid things. Well that quiet does not last for long, besides our never ending weekly youth group meetings, Serving the hungry at the Welcome Inn, and our monthly dinners at the Gilchrist House, in late June the combined youth groups held a beach bonfire at north beach to kick off the summer and send off our High School Youth to the ELCA Western States Youth Gathering held in Thousand Oaks! We had a fantastic time of fellowship and worship with high school students from all over the western United States all culminating in a day of service working with an inner city congregation in Los Angeles to feed the hungry and pray oneon one with those who needed prayers. In July the youth had a special day on the water in Mission Bay, San Diego wake boarding and tubing and just generally being kids, we also managed to gain some insight into grace and forgiveness along the way. At the end of July the High School group joined our partner group from Huntington Beach for a special High School All Nighter Summer Edition! We stayed up all night bowling and playing broom hockey, playing games and doing devotions, and of course eating breakfast at 5am before falling asleep at dawn. Things heated up in August, we hosted Vacation Bible School and Vacation Day Camp simultaneously! That brought the sound level back up at least for that week, but then it got really serious, EXTREME WEEK. This year Extreme Week was off the hook, we took record numbers of brave souls to 4 major theme parks in 5 days! Really fun, but exhausting. I can t thank our dedicated and loving adult sponsors enough, your willingness to get involved and show your care for the youth makes such an impact in the lives of these kids, you are truly a blessing, thank you. As we move forward into the Fall there are many exciting new changes taking place in the Youth and Children s Ministry; Steve Kos is taking over as our Youth and Children s Ministry Council representative and I am grateful for his willingness to take this position, Steve and I are in process of doing even more with the youth in the coming months and we welcome any input you may have as well. We also have Katheryn Yeakel as our new Christian Education representative and I am looking forward to more great things as we move forward. All of the fun, fellowship, service, and worship have been great this summer, but the real treat takes place on September 7th - RALLY DAY! A chance to kick off the new school year, welcome everyone back from summer vacation, and dig into our Fall programs. I am looking forward to working with the kids as well as the parents and any caring adults who wish to be part of the youth ministry here at Our Savior s. If being part of this is of interest to you please don t be shy, let me know and together with these amazing kids we can change not only their world, but humanity at large. Happy to serve, Bob Cooper 5
