1 The Messenger ~ September 2017 Our Savior s Lutheran Church and School San Clemente, California Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve Claiming Our Identity! We live in this world, but we don t act like its people 2 Corinthians 10:3 This past summer I spent a lot of time listening to others. I heard stories of great triumphs and victory and the stories of horrific tragedy that no one should endure. I was in a cab one day and started a conversation with the driver. I asked him if there was any leader or political group that he thought he could trust, not one! He answered quickly. I then said, well at least you have your family and community. He looked at me and said, No, you can t trust anyone. You can t trust your sons or daughters or wife, no one. You can only trust Allah. This statement was not made as a theological declaration, it was made as one human being had been let down by even the closest of relationships and had come to the conclusion that only God could be trusted in a world that had become so twisted against itself. Now maybe I just caught my cabby on a bad day or perhaps he was simply born a pessimist and carried a good dose of suspicion when it came to others; but the conversation did get me thinking about our relationships and how we treat one another. Perhaps the problem is that despite Paul s warning above we not only live in this word but we ACT just like its people. I know that Christians are not perfect and that we are just as sinful and broken as anyone else. But that doesn t mean that we shouldn t TRY to be different. In fact, it should be our goal to be as those who have been set a part to show the holiness of God in how we live and treat each other. Our faith should not just be an identification; but a way of seeing and understanding our role in the world. For Christians this begins in our baptism. Baptism is the means by which Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit has chosen to work and confirm salvation in our lives. In the waters of baptism we are joined with Jesus. This is a mystery, but one that scripture points to over and over again. Through water and the word the Holy Spirit is particularly present to begin what is a lifelong lesson on what it means to understand God s great love and gracious regard for each and every one of us and how it is that this same love continues to guide, mold and form us into people who reflect that same gracious love in word and deed into the world that God so loves. There are five gracious gifts that are given to us in the Baptismal liturgy. Five questions that should help us to grow in our own spirituality and keep us from acting like everyone else. These words are used again at confirmation. They are both questions and authoritative directions as to how it is that we are to live our lives. to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? On a daily basis, we are invited to live, hear, share, proclaim, serve, and strive in the name of Christ. God guides and shapes us in the living of our baptism in the newness of life in Christ as we practice our faith each day. These five gifts help us to practice our faith and serve as a reminder that we have been claimed by God and grafted into the holy family. If we do not practice faith, it is easy to get confused, complacent, chase other dreams, lose focus, and wander away from God s calling not reflecting our new life in Christ and the love of God. The result of such living is my cabby who seemingly has never encountered people who dare to live beyond themselves. It is God s work, but our hands as we are sent out into the world to be a visible witness to the love of Christ. Continued on page 2
2 Continued from page 1 This fall I remind you to LIVE AMONG GOD S PEOPLE and to HEAR THE WORD OF GOD AND SHARE IN THE LORD S SUPPER! And may others see the goodness of God through the lives that we live. Peace! Pastor Jeff Frohner A NOTE FROM PASTOR ERNIE Greetings in the Name of our Gracious Lord; To our Brothers and Sisters in Christ at Our Savior s Lutheran, Annie and I have returned safely to our home in Kentucky, and, campus ministry at Newberry College in South Carolina. It is blazing hot and with matching humidity on campus this week. Our fall sports have come to campus for fall preseason practice, the faculty have returned for their fall retreat, and the totality of the solar eclipse will go right over our little town on Monday. It is a very busy time for all of us as we prepare to welcome perhaps a record size first year class of students, 450 men and women. You can feel the anticipation in the air along with 100% humidity. Annie and I wanted to say once again, thank you and God bless you for everything you so kindly, lovingly, graciously, and wonderfully shared with us this summer. Basically, we are eternally grateful to you for the sharing of your lives with us. We are just not sure how to adequately tell you how much you all have changed our lives for the much better. You are truly blessing to us in ways we have yet to discover. You are in our hearts forever. 11:00am Manna Bible Study, FR are keeping you all in our prayers. We ask for your prayers as well. Be kind to Pastor Jeff and welcome him home as one renewed in Christ and empowered to preach, teach and lead, in the power of God s Holy Spirit. You are blessed to have Jeff and his family in your midst. I am forever grateful to my Brother in Christ who had faith in my ability to serve you if only for 89 days. I continue my blog at newberrycampusministry.wordpress.com. You can follow Newberry College Campus ministry on Twitter at We hope to stop by in March while we are California next year on spring break. Be well good friends and may God fill you with all things necessary to serve his people in San Clemente. Remember, you are the light of Christ in word and deeds where you live and work and play. Have courage little flock; God is with you. Many have asked about my Sabbatical and I can confidently say that it exceeded my expectations. I hope that you can come and see some of the pictures and hear some of the stories that I ll share on Sunday morning during our Adult Study time. I also want to thank the congregation for its willingness to support a Sabbatical policy that allows for times of renewal and reflection by your pastor. This particular time we were blessed by the Clergy Renewal Grant from the Lily Foundation which paid for all but $75 of our expenses. I hope my time away will be reflected in renewed passion for our mutual work here at Our Savior s! BAPTISM FESTIVAL!!! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5th! Are you baptized? Are your children baptized? Has your Great Aunt shared that she would like to be baptized? Baptism is the gift of God given to us through Jesus Christ in which our assurance of salvation and God s good and gracious love is given to us as a sign and seal of God s faithfulness. It is a command from Jesus, that all of us should be baptized. This command is given in love so that none of us might doubt God s ability to reach into the human heart and work God s great promises in our lives. Sign up for the Great Baptismal Festival on Sunday November 5th here at OSLC! Please let Pastor know or stop into the church office. Folks will be free to come forward during the worship service as well! ALREADY BAPTIZED? GOOD!!! No need to be baptized again. As scripture says: One Lord, One faith and One Baptism. Ephesians 4:5. However, we ll have a place for you to reaffirm your Baptism as well and rejoice in the promises that God has given you! 4
5 September 2017 A note from Karen. Rally Day is September 10. It will be a LOT of fun with a Classic Car Show, In-N-Out Burgers, Bounce House and more. It serves as a kick-off for our fall programming. As I was trying to decide what to write for my newsletter article, I came across this article from a couple years ago. It still resonates with me so I thought I would share it again. Is this your life? Do you want this to be your life? I would love to hear your thoughts Make room for the walnuts!!! Huh??? Busy, busy, busy.. Often when I start a conversation with a friend, I will say, How are you doing? Many times the answer is I m so busy. We seem to be very busy all the time. Just at our house, we have two working adults, two dogs and a turtle to care for, volunteer work, shopping, gardening, trash day, housework, cooking, cleaning, laundry and, oh yeah, church. Does church come last in our list of things to do? I do not ask if God comes last, because, at least for me, I know that God is everywhere so I don t have to GO anywhere to be with God. But, church I have to shower, do my hair, get dressed, put on my shoes, get in the car, get gas, drive to church busy, busy, busy. I was given a gift once of a jar with rice and walnuts in it. The jar was full to the top and had a card attached that read: In this empty jar, I poured rice, and then tried to insert all these walnuts. They didn't fit, that way. Emptying the jar again, I put the walnuts in first, then poured in the rice, and everything fit each walnut and every grain of rice. This jar represents our time spent with the Lord, and the rice represents all the other busy things that fill up our days. When you put in the walnuts first, and pour in the rice after that, it all fits. If you try to put in the rice first, there isn't enough space in the jar for it all, even though the same amount fit when we put the walnuts first. I feel that way about the important things in my life God, church, family, friends and ME. When I put everything else first, I don t have time for any of it. When I put in the walnuts first, there is room in my life for the rest. I would invite you to make a commitment this fall to make church a walnut. Come to worship, participate in a Bible Study, join the choir (my personal favorite). It WILL make life fall into place. In His Service, Karen Skipper ~ Director of Music 5
6 Youth and Children s Ministry by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministries Grace is All Around Well the summer is waning and we are looking forward to a wonderful fall season. During the summer the youth did our normal summer things, weekly meetings, Gilchrist House service, Vacation Day Camp, and such, but something happened during Extreme Week that I thought I would share. Now for those that may not know, Extreme Week is a youth event that entails us going to 3 theme parks in one week. This year, in order to keep the cost as reasonable as possible, I had purchased the tickets in advance and had exactly the amounts that we needed for each day. On the last day, Knott s Berry Farm day, as we were entering the park all of the youth and adults had been admitted and I was just presenting my ticket when the scanner showed a problem with my ticket. How could this be? I had just watched a dozen people enter in front of me using tickets that I had purchased myself at the same time! Well it turns out that the ticket in my hand was not for Knott s Berry Farm but rather for Knott s Soak City which is across the street; my ticket salesperson had made a mistake. I was instructed to go to the Guest services window to straighten this out. At the guest services window I was told that since I had purchased the tickets from a third party and not directly from Knott s that I would have to take the matter up with them, not good, I had a group of teens already in the park. Clearly I was going to have to buy a ticket for myself, not the end of the world, but not ideal either. As I was presenting the money for my ticket I felt a soft hand on my shoulder and turned to find a very nice lady smiling at me. She asked if I was buying a ticket and if so that I should stop and put my money back into my pocket, she had an extra ticket that she was going to give away anyway and that I was welcome to it! Now I like to think that God is watching out for me as I work with the youth in my charge, but I rarely see such a great example of grace displayed by humans as I saw that day. This person didn t know me, didn t owe me anything, I had done nothing to earn that free ticket, and she certainly had nothing to gain by giving it to me, yet there I was, entering the park without paying a dime extra, all she said was have fun and God bless. God bless, indeed. Lots of stuff coming up so check the youth calendar in this newsletter and let s have an awesome year in youth ministry!
