1 The Messenger ~ January 2019 Our Savior s Lutheran Church and School San Clemente, California Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve PASTORAL PREDICTIONS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1 I want to officially go on the record in order to predict the following in There will be famine, natural disasters, corruption, war, economic downturns, environmental catastrophes and disease. But here s the deal, there are ALWAYS famines, natural disasters, corruption, war, economic downturns, environmental catastrophes and disease. The difference is that we live in a world that is so thoroughly connected by the digital age that the sheer volume of such events that we are intimately aware of seems at times overwhelming. I think Billy Joel said it best in his 1995 hit: We didn't start the fire. It was always burning, since the world's been turning. We didn't start the fire. No we didn't light it; but we tried to fight it. I want to offer another set of predictions as well. There will be good harvests, beautiful sunsets, integrity, peace, economic windfalls, environmental triumphs and healings. These too are just as safe a prediction because they always happen each and every year yet somehow they don t ever get the same coverage as the first list. This year I ve decided that my New Year s resolution is going to be to find one solid piece of good news each and every day. But that s not all, I m going to try and share that piece of good news with at least one other individual, whether in person, by or by phone. That is also what we celebrate in Holy Communion and Baptism. That Jesus is here. We celebrate that God shows up over and over again to remind us that while we are not free from the many hardships that befall us; God has promised to walk with, through and under all that comes our way. During this new year of 2019, I know that we ll be bombarded with bad news. Some will be the usual catastrophes that befall the world and some will be the made up and exaggerated fear claims that politicians will try to use in order to garner votes and motivate the securing of their war chests. It will be all too easy to be on the side of doom and gloom. I for one, invite you to stand with me in keeping an eye out for the good news of God in Jesus Christ and then share it! And we might even be surprised, that we often see what we are looking for and that might just make 2019 a very, very good year! Peace! Pastor Jeff As people of faith we don t minimize the very real problems in the world; but we of all people should also keep a sharp eye on the horizon, looking for those signs of God and God s continued good work on our behalf. That is what the season of Epiphany is all about; basically that God does show up! Jesus makes himself known in the Gospels at his baptism, the wedding at Cana and on the mountain of Transfiguration where he stands between Moses and Elijah; but Jesus also makes himself known in our world, in our lives, in worship and in our care and concern for the neighbor. Epiphany is basically one big celebration that Jesus is here right here in our midst.

3 After all the hectic fun of the holidays, we have arrived at January. The first month of the year was called Januarius by the Romans, after Janus, the god of doors and gates. We see the same word in janua, the Latin for a gate or opening. From the idea that a door is a way in, an entrance, it became a custom among the Romans to pray to Janus whenever they undertook a new work. He was also the god of the beginning of the day, and it was only natural that when a new month was added at the beginning of the year it should be named after him. During this month offerings to the god were made of meal, frankincense, and wine, each of which had to be quite new. Since a gate opens both ways, Janus was thought to be able to see back into the past, and forward into the future, and he was usually represented in pictures as having a double head that looked both ways. I think this image is a good one at this time of year we take the time to look back and also to look ahead. Looking back, I would like to thank all those musicians who made the Thanksgiving/Advent/Christmas worship services worshipful and meaningful celebrations. Our soloists, ensembles, bands and choirs have worked very hard to make a joyful noise as they offer their gifts to God. I also thank our wonderful Pastor Jeff, secretary Gay, sound man Bob, hostess Lola and those behind the scenes people who serve those who decorate our sanctuary, ushers, communion servers and readers. Looking ahead, I challenge you to get more involved in the work of Our Savior s. Pastor Jeff often closes our worship services by saying that worship happens in the church building but church happens after we leave the sanctuary. Take church with you throughout the week by helping someone who needs it, volunteering at church or in the community or (my personal favorite) singing or playing an instrument for the glory of God. Happy January! In His service Karen Skipper, Director of Music January 2019 Music Notes Do you have a New Year s resolution??? Think about this Coffee with Jesus cartoon 3

4 Youth and Children s Page by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministry Looking Back Looking Forward Well 2018 is in the books and we look forward to a wonderful and faith filled 2019! Before we move on it seems that we should look back fondly at the events of 2018 one last time. In January we welcomed the good folks from Lutheran Retreats, Camps, and Conferences to worship for Camp Sunday. Later that month the high schoolers went out on our first ever Destination Unknown outing, a fun night where the kids must simply trust that we are going to go someplace and do something wonderful, it does not disappoint. In February we gathered nearly $600 for the Souper Bowl of Caring! The elementary kids had their annual Bounce Party at Big Air Trampoline Park, it was a blast! The High School students went to Luther Glen for the winter retreat and the middle school kids went to El Camino Pines for a winter retreat as well. February saw the youth ministry kids read for the Lenten mid-week services, it s always encouraging to have our youth lead in worship. In March the youth ministry hosted one evening of The Lenten Soup Suppers and the families did a wonderful job. The Elementary students finally got their chance to go on a winter retreat and we did so at the beautiful Luther Glen facility. Our younger kids attended first communion classes and received the sacrament on Maundy Thursday, welcome to the table, kids! We also held our annual Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast and it was a smashing success as usual, thank you to all that participated. April saw our first service trip into Mexico and it was a wonderful experience, much was learned and a new sense of purpose was instilled in the young lives that participated. We will be going several times in 2019 so stay tuned for that. May saw our 7th grade Confirmation students go on their final retreat and then step up and claim their faith as they were confirmed on the day of Pentecost. In June we held our final fundraiser for the National Youth Gathering with a spaghetti dinner followed by 4 a piano concert by Claudia Gambino, the food and music were fantastic! Later in June we held VBS and the high school kids got on the plane and setoff for Houston, Texas to attend the ELCA National Youth Gathering, it was awesome! Over the summer we met at the beach, cooked s mores and hot dogs, met with youth groups from other congregations, and generally acted like kids on summer vacation, including trips to Knott s Berry Farm and Soak City! In September we got back to business as the new school year began and our students adjusted to life in new schools for many of them. In October we held our annual Late Nighter for the Middle School kids and we also celebrated the fun of Halloween with our annual Trick or Trunk event. In November we tried our first ever Family Bowling Night and a good time was had by all in attendance. This brings us to December and our Christmas outreach in Mexico. We served over 400 meals, gave out toys and stockings to the kids, sent home groceries to the families, and played games and did crafts with everyone in attendance. It was a very powerful day. A little closer to home, we also walked down the hill to Cotton s Point Senior Apartments and shared some cookies, carols, and stories with the folks living there. To round out the year some of our High School and Young Adult ministry folks went to T.A.C.O. (Third Avenue Charitable Organization) in San Diego and served breakfast to the homeless and hungry in that community. Of course all of our regularly scheduled meetings and service took place all year and will continue in 2019 as well. Here s wishing you a blessed and happy Bob Cooper, Director of Youth and Children s Ministry

The meeting was held at the home of Pat Kelly who is just a good guy. Discussed at this council member meeting (without spouses) were the tuition rates for 2019 for the preschool. The School Board had already approved the tuition and it was then sent to the council for approval which was unanimous. There were no reports at this meeting. The December meeting is definitely a favorite of mine. This one was no exception. It was so fun and the dishes were truly restaurant quality! All had an excellent time! Thank you for allowing me to serve on the council. It is a great experience. Respectfully submitted, M Liz Kelly ~ Council Secretary Save Your Aluminum Pop-Tabs for Ronald McDonald House We have a new collection container for Ronald McDonald House located in the narthex.
