1 The Messenger ~ December 2018 Our Savior s Lutheran Church and School San Clemente, California Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians There is much we can learn from our ancestors in the Christian faith. Here is a list of some of the saints who might just give us some insight into living the Christian faith in these days of Advent. All of these Christians are celebrated during the month of December. Of course, we know that all of us in Christ are called to be saints. That is, we are to let our light shine in the darkness. Some however, because of their notoriety or particular piety have been singled out by the church for our attention. Who in your life might you add to this list? Think of those who have helped you understand the love of God and what it means to follow Jesus. John of Damascus (Died December 4th, 749 AD) lived during a time of deep conflict in the church over the use of images in worship. While some held that depictions of Christ or other biblical figures were idolatrous, John believed that because of Christ's incarnation, all physical matter was holy and could serve as a vessel for encountering the divine presence. While these images like the bread and wine of holy communion are not worshiped in themselves, they can serve as signs that we have a God who is not ashamed of bodies, but positively honors them by taking on our human flesh. We experience the love and power of this God-in-Christ not only in heaven, but here in the stuff of everyday life. What tangible item aids you in prayer and worship of God? Nicholas (Celebrated on December 6th. He died in 343 AD) was a bishop in present-day Turkey of whom little is known but to whom much legend is attributed, earning him the title "wonder-worker" among Eastern Christians. Stories remember him as devoted to the care of children, including an instance where he secretly rescued three young girls from prostitution by providing their dowries in the middle of the night. Over time these legends evolved into the Santa Claus figure associated with Christmas gift giving. Nicholas was also present at the Council of Nicaea and was a signer of the Creed we still confess today. Perhaps you can consider giving a gift anonymously or in the name of someone else in the tradition of Nicholas. Ambrose (Celebrated on December 7th. He died in 397 AD) served as bishop of Milan, despite feeling profoundly unworthy of the task. His ability to craft beautiful rhetoric is seen most clearly in his hymnody, which includes the familiar Advent hymn "Savior of the nations, come." He also promoted the use of antiphonal chant in worship a dialogical form of singing still used in many congregations, particularly with the psalms. But Ambrose did not confine his words to worship and was also not afraid to use his voice to speak truth to power. He both resisted imperial forces trying to take control of the Christian cathedral in his city and forced Emperor Theodosius to publicly repent for the massacre of seven thousand people. His is an example of how worship and doctrine are directly tied to Christian practice. When has your Christian faith spurred you to action? Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 Lucy (or Lucia) whose name means "light" (Celebrated on December 13th. She died in the year 304 AD) was a virgin and martyr in the early fourth century. In an example of how Christian observance often overlaps with and is informed by the cycle of seasons in nature, Lucy's feast day used to fall on the winter solstice the shortest day of the year prompting celebrations involving light. Those of Scandinavian descent are especially familiar with "Santa Lucia" festivals where a young girl is dressed in white and wears a crown of candles on her head. Lucy's real light, however, was her love for the poor, for which she was revered as sign of Christ's self-giving love. When have you been on the receiving end of unexpected generosity? How might you be on the giving end? Perhaps in the tradition of St. Lucia, you might bring a sweet treat to a neighbor. Katharina von Bora (Died December 20th, 1552 AD) was a Cistercian nun until she left the convent and married Martin Luther in The home that she and Martin created together was not only a source of joy and fulfillment for them but for their entire community. Their "parsonage" had a revolving door of guests and included a farm, a fish pond, gardens, and a brewery all of which Katharina, or Katie, skillfully managed. In addition to raising six children, Katie's income helped the family care for those in need well beyond their immediate kin. The life that she and Martin shared is a sign of God's love made manifest in the lifelong covenant between two people. Peace, Offer a prayer for those who through their friendship or partnership have sustained you. In what way do our relationships reflect God s love? Pastor Jeff ADVENT CALENDARS! This article appeared in LivingLutheran last year and is partially repented below. For as long as I can remember, I ve opened Advent calendars the chocolate-filled ones. Day after day I would find the number, countdown to Christmas, and enjoy a piece of chocolate. As a child, I knew I would find a piece of chocolate every day, yet I was still surprised and delighted to find that bit of sweetness every morning. Opening a chocolate-filled door isn t the same as waiting for a door to be opened when you re weary and tired. Yet when I open an Advent calendar each year, I reflect on all the doors we open. We open doors for friends and family. We open our doors in hospitality to feed neighbors. We open the doors of the church hoping whoever walks through will know they are loved and welcomed. We open the doors of our hearts so that joy and peace can fill us. But what of the doors that have been opened for us? In a few short days we ll know intimately and deeply what it feels like when a door is opened for us. A door that unlocks all the hopes and dreams needed for this world. A door that opens so that no one has to be excluded. A door that brings us comfort and peace. We stand at the door, waiting. 5 December 2018 Every so often, I surf around the web looking for articles on music. I recently found this headline Incessant Christmas Music Really Can Be Bad For Our Mental Health, Experts Warn SAY IT ISN T SO!!! The article, written by Lindsay Dodgson and printed in the October 17 issue of Business Insider, went on to explain If you've managed to avoid Christmas music so far, that's only going to get harder the closer to December we get. Prepare yourself for more stores blasting out All I Want for Christmas, and Frosty the Snowman. Christmas music is something you either love or hate. If you find the tunes pretty annoying, then spare some sympathy for retail workers who have probably had to listen to festive tracks for at least a month already. If you work in a shop and you already feel like Christmas songs are getting to you, you might actually be right. According to clinical psychologist Linda Blair, relentless festive tunes can be mentally draining. "People working in the shops at Christmas have to [tune out] Christmas music, because if they don't, it really does stop you from being able to focus on anything else," Blair told Sky News. "You're simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you're hearing." At first, holiday music can spark feelings of nostalgia. But after the tenth or twentieth time Michael Bublé's Christmas album blasts through the speakers, you may feel annoyance, boredom, and even distress. It's the "mere exposure effect," psychologist Victoria Williamson told NBC. Essentially, when you've heard songs a certain amount of times, the brain becomes oversaturated and you start to find them unpleasant. Then, other stresses about money, travelling, or seeing relatives can become exacerbated. However, Christmas music isn't going to go away. Retailers see it as an opportunity to get customers in the mood for spending. In fact, some research has shown that getting the right balance of Christmas songs can make shoppers feel more positively about their environment. That's also why some stores pump out "holiday scents" like pine and cinnamon to influence shoppers to spend more. For those who work in retail there's probably no escape from Christmas for the next few months. So you might want to buy some earplugs. This article was originally published by Business Insider. Does this mean that we should not listen to Christmas music? Of course not. However, the article does seem to suggest that we vary what we listen to. As a music therapist, I am very cognizant of how music can affect our emotions, our behaviors and, as the article suggests, even our health. That is why I find it so refreshing that in church, the music is ALL centered around the message of Advent - preparing for the coming of the Light of the World. I will be listening to Christmas music at home, in my car and, yes, as I patronize businesses. However, I am glad that I can come for church for a sanity check and hear word and music that reinforces the REAL Reason for the Season. In His service, Karen Skipper, Director of Music 5 Coffee with Jesus on next page

6 So what is the Reason for the Season? Here is a Coffee With Jesus cartoon I enjoyed HOLY LAND TRIP !!! We will once again host an OSLC Holy Land Trip. 7 Youth and Children s Ministry by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministry Do You Hear What I Hear? Here it comes can you hear it?...can you smell it?...can you feel it? It s Christmas time! The most wonderful time of the year! I am so excited simply because Christmas is coming and that means we get to tell the story, sing the songs, the kids will have a great time each Sunday as they strain to remember which candle we light on the Advent wreath, it s all just wonderful. Preschool Our Pre-school students will be presenting their Christmas pageant on Thursday, December 13 and Friday, December 14 at 9am, if you want to see something really cute to start your day come visit one of these shows. Elementary Our youngest confirmation students (grades 4 & 5) are doing great in their classes as they learn how God is like a (fill in the blank),it is a really fun time to share and explore the many faces of our amazing God. All kids in grades 4 & 5 are welcome and encouraged to join us on Sunday mornings between services (approximately 9:50am-10:20am) in the youth room. Stay after 1st service or come a little early for 2nd service and let them begin their journey of becoming theologians in our youth room. If your child has not been to one of these classes do not worry, they are each a stand alone lesson so they will not be lost at all. Middle School Our Middle school group which meets each Wednesday evening from 6:30-8pm will be having their annual Christmas party on Wednesday, December 19. This is always a lot of fun and all middle school kids and their friends are invited. High School Our High School kids will be attending the annual Christmas All Nighter on December 21, this year it will be a Lock In along with the youth from Community Lutheran in Rancho Santa Margarita (we partner with them on a lot of stuff). Everyone The youth and Family ministry will start the season with a service trip down to Tijuana, Mexico on December 1st. We will be visiting an orphanage and doing a Christmas outreach for those in the area. I will report on this later once we have actually done the service. Also, we will again be serving breakfast for the homeless and hungry of San Diego at T.A.C.O. (Third Avenue Charitable Organization) on Friday, December 28. This trip is normally reserved for our 7th grade Confirmation students but this year it will be opened up to any student in 7th grade or older. On Sunday, December 9 we will be continuing our annual tradition of Cookies and Carols at Cotton s Point. This is a nice event were we go to the Cotton s Point Senior Apartments just down the hill from the church and spend some time decorating cookies, singing songs, and sharing stories with the folks living there. Anyone interested is welcome to join us. I hope your Christmas season is full of joy and love. Merry Christmas. The holidays, while joyous, can also be a challenging time for anyone who has suffered the loss of someone they loved, or other kinds of sadness or hurt. For this reason, our community now offers a Blue Christmas. Started here at Our Savior s three years ago, it was developed to be a gift for the community and is now hosted each year by a different congregation. This service of comfort is a way we can recognize the hope of this season, while we also acknowledge those sad feelings within, or remember those who are in our hearts by remembering them in a meaningful way.
