1 The Messenger ~ February 2018 Our Savior s Lutheran Church and School San Clemente, California Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve Hearts and Ashes: The Valentine s Ash Wednesday Conundrum! This year St. Valentine s Day, the day for lovers and romance falls on Ash Wednesday, the day for solemn reflection on our mortality and call for repentance! I was thinking about this little conundrum and how we might look at both of these days through the same lens. Maybe give heart shaped Ash on the forehead? Bring all your chocolate hearts to worship and we ll keep them safe and secure until Easter? Perhaps launch a whole new line of Lenten Valentines I love you; oh and someday you re going to die? Ok, I m being a bit silly, but the conversation I ve been having in my head is quit real. I then ran into this article by Nancy Bartels, in LivingLutheran, March It talks about love in a very Lenten way. I hope you enjoy her thoughts. LOVE IS HARD. John 3:16. It s a Bible verse much beloved for many reasons. Its message is full of comfort. It s the elevator pitch for Christianity the heart of the faith in one sentence. And everyone likes being told they re loved, especially when the lover is the Lord of the universe. But it s a tough message too. Look what God s love cost: his only begotten Son. Love is hard and costly. And that s the kicker. We can t just go about our lives in the warm glow of knowing that we are beloved children of God. God s love demands a response and it isn t always about soft, fuzzy feelings and valentines and violins. God so loved the world, the verse begins. Not just us. Not just God s chosen people. Not just Lutherans or Americans or people we like loveable people. God loves the whole world and not just the people in it, but the entire creation. Real love on this earth demands that a parent become sleep-deprived to nurse a sick child back to health or work two jobs to keep food on the table. It calls a spouse to give loving care to a partner suffering from dementia. It calls firefighters or soldiers to risk their lives to save others. It calls volunteers to spend long hours in soup kitchens housed in bad neighborhoods to feed some of the least among us. Loving the rest of creation is hard too. We love our comforts. What are we willing to sacrifice for the sake of other creatures? Cut down on driving miles? Give up big houses on huge patches of land? Turn away from deep-green lawns kept that way only through more fertilizer and pesticides than are good for the land? Say no to more trinkets and gadgets that will six months from now end up in a landfill? Loving the whole world is hard. So is loving our family members and friends. Loving people we don t know is harder. And as for loving our enemies But God so loved the world. How should we love the world today? In the present public climate, we can say the most evil, hateful, hurtful things we can think of about people with whom we disagree and excuse it as free speech. Speaking the truth in love or even respecting or being civil to them is just so last century. So how do we love people who disagree with us about matters of public policy or have lifestyles we find repugnant or who are in competition with us for scarce resources? How do we love people of a different faith, or who speak a different language, or who look different, who are not our kind? How do we love those that say openly that they hate us and want to destroy us? God so loved the world. What about the non-human world? Are we willing to pay more for meat and vegetables we know are humanely and responsibly produced? Are we willing to not buy the latest must-have gadget because we know it s produced in conditions that brutalize the Continued on page 2

2 people who make it? Are we willing to live more frugally and simply, giving up some luxuries and comforts, so other creatures also have a chance to survive? We know what God was willing to do for love. What are we willing to do? Talkback: What difficult choices do you make in response to God s radical love for creation? Who is it difficult to love? How do you move from dislike or hate to tolerance and love? What is your grateful response to God s love in your everyday life? Peace! During the Wednesdays of Lent we ll have soup supper and a Midweek Lenten Service at 6:30pm. Our theme will be Living the Promise as we look anew at the call to discipleship that is given to the baptized. Lent will end as we enter Holy Week with Palm/Passion Sunday on March 25th, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday, April 1st. 4 February Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. [b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:34-40 New International Version (NIV) Footnotes: Matthew 22:37 Deut. 6:5 Matthew 22:39 Lev. 19:18 February 14th is just around the corner. The heart-shaped boxes of candy are already in the stores. The ads are on TV and in the mailboxes. Valentine s day will be here soon. What are you doing for Valentine s Day? February 14th is just around the corner. The music has been picked. The choir is rehearsing special music. The ashes are in the church office. Ash Wednesday will be here soon. What are you doing for Ash Wednesday? Yes February 14th is Ash Wednesday. The human part of me says, Bummer, there goes my romantic date night. But, the better part of me knows that real love was when God sent His Son to us in the form of a man. Ash Wednesday begins the journey of Lent a time to focus on our relationship with God and how we can serve Him in our lives. So, I will be spending Valentine s Day Ash Wednesday with God (and my husband, since he sings in the choir) in church. We will go out for a romantic date night on another night. And I will enter into Lent on Valentine s Day Ash Wednesday by committing to do better in following the great commandment that we find in Matthew 22 - to love God and love my neighbor as myself. That is LOVE. In His Service, Karen Skipper ~ Director of Music Who is our neighbor? 4

5 Youth and Children s Page by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children s Ministry God Is All Around Wow! Lent is upon us already! Weren t we all just singing Silent Night and celebrating the birth of Jesus? I guess we must be having fun because time has surely flown. I always look forward to Lent and the Lenten traditions that go along with it, starting with Ash Wednesday. As a child I always had a certain sense of pride in walking around all day with that smudge on my forehead and found a certain brotherhood with others that I would see doing the same. I guess that was my first realization of the larger body of Christ and how we are all connected through him. As a child, lent in our household included the compulsory Lenten Sacrifice, usually involving giving up candy or dessert or some other form of self -denial to remind us, in some small way, of Christ s sacrifice on the cross. I tried giving up homework one year but Mom wouldn t allow it, dang! But being the good Mom she was (is) she suggested a wonderful alternative, Mom said that instead of giving something up and making this season one of negativity that I should turn it around, to find something positive to do instead. I would try to be more helpful and loving with those in my family and in my school and I would help around the house without being asked, it was the early training of a servant attitude, a season of giving. As an adult in the 21st century I have started a new Lenten discipline for myself; each day of lent I use my smartphone camera to take a picture of where I see God. I then post the photo along with an explanation to my social media accounts. I find that intentionally looking for God s presence in my life is a very powerful reminder that we are never outside the love of Christ and that he is always walking with us. So however the season of Lent is made real for you, I hope all the blessings that are waiting are made real in your life as we await the final pain and ultimate glory of Holy Week.
