For Your Information We did well the last 2 events. Walleye Dinner net earnings is about $ due to the price of Walleye this year. We still have several 1-lb bags of Walleye left to sell for $20, so the final tally is still not complete. Come to the Norske Butikken and buy one or two pounds of Walleye and help us out, too! M-mmmmm, Good Eatin! For our Meet and Greet with the Norwegian Tourists, we received $725 for tickets, and the food costs were $ That left us with a profit of $ (It was nice that our guests also paid the $10 for their meal, too!) From the President: November s President s Letter What a wonderful time we had visiting with the Norwegian Tourists on October 2 nd at our lodge. Those of us who attended met them waving Norwegian flags as their bus drove up Newland from Colfax to our parking lot. We had a good meal, great conversations, some fun, a quiz, and we offered some of our extra books to them for free-we still had quite a few! And, for a gift, we received 2 books on areas of Stavanger, NOR from our visitors; a nice gesture of friendship from them. Many expressed that they thought our building was wonderful with its artwork. It was truly a great evening and I enjoyed it from the preparation, cooking, and the event itself. Now, back to the Lodge building. These will be my last remarks on this business Yeah! Last month I spoke of the reasons I feel that we should continue the support for our lodge building. Trollheim Lodge needs a building if we want to have more contact with other groups, host dinners for the public as fundraisers, and be able to operate our store, Norske Butikken. The building is also a good place to have classes, clubs and meetings. Some income can be generated by rentals. However, by continuing this path, we need to remember the words of the first sentence of this paragraph, we should continue the support for our lodge building. We must care for it, clean it, fix that which is broken, repair what is needed, and be mindful what we house in this building. By being vigilant in this task, we can keep the Trollheim building for more years to come. It s a job that will take small and large tasks but, I am certain we can do it for several more years. OK, but what if our membership does NOT wish to maintain the lodge? We have emergency funds in our account at Headquarters that should help us maintain the lodge until we need to sell as long as we do get income from sources such as the store sales and rentals in the interim until the property is sold. We just need to know that the day will be coming. Selling a property like ours could be a quick deal or a long process. We need to arrive at a consensus regarding when to sell, at what price to sell, and where we, as a lodge plan to land; i.e. rental hall, a church basement, etc. Also, for consideration, we must decide our location; Lakewood, or another west suburb? Ah, yes, we will need committees! Would we want to recover some money in liquidating the equipment we own, such as the kitchen appliances, dishes, the tables and chairs, etc. WHERE and WHO will be responsible for the record-keeping of the lodge when we have no permanent home? Does someone have space for 3 large file cabinets, audio/video equipment, flags, electric piano, artwork, and other pieces that speak of our heritage? Storage spaces can cost a lot of money over several years. Either way, I think selling the lodge or keeping the lodge creates lots of work for all of us, whichever direction we take. I d rather spend more time getting to know the people at Trollheim, AND building bonds and friendships with those who are committed to the mission statement: The mission of the Sons of Norway is to promote and to preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic countries, and to provide quality insurance and financial products to its members. Enough said. If elected again for the term, I will like to lead this lodge into the direction of keeping the building, and create a better lodge to serve all the Nordic countries, find ways to raise funds, and continue to make Trollheim Lodge and its building a viable place for another decade! Elaine Homan, President. 2
3 New Members/changes There are no members or changes to report for this month. I can t take up much room naming all of those members who have not paid dues the last 3 months, but I will begin recording how many people are on our roll for membership each month. We had a small growth spurt for 2017 but beginning in June, we are losing members; many who have missed their due dates for reals! June: 265 members July: 262 members Aug: 250 (big drop!) Sept: 249 Let s not continue this trend! Please pay your dues on time! King Sooper Gift Cards! Did you buy a King Soopers gift card the past year from Bev Moe? Please use it! It is an open card after the first amount ($10) has been exhausted, and can be refilled at the check-out at King Soopers to be continually used. Remember, you refill it with your own money, and then use the card to buy your groceries. Me to teller: Please add $100 (by cash) to this card. Teller: Of course. Would you like to pay for your purchase with this gift card? Me: Yes, please. Teller: Your total is $85 dollars. You have $15 dollars left on your card. Me: Thank you. Just that easily, I a) bought my groceries, b) King Soopers made a sale and c) Trollheim Lodge received a donation from King Soopers! It s a WIN-WIN-WIN situation!!!! No money out of my pocket except for the groceries! And I still have $15 on my gift card! Please remember to use your King Soopers Gift Card! November General Meeting Saturday, November 17, 2018; 2 pm (it s daytime!) NO Potluck; please bring snacks, munchies or desserts This will be our first of 4 monthly general meetings to be held on the 3 rd Saturday of the months of Nov., Dec., 2018 and Jan., and Feb. of Please remember this is not a permanent change; it is only for the 4 months listed. If we like it, we may discuss it in 2019 at the board meetings. Saturday s meeting will include election of officers. A schedule of officers is listed on page 7. You may nominate any other person, including yourself, before the election begins. Perry Monkelien, our historian and librarian has a program about the Nazi occupation in Norway. That is always an interesting topic about this era. See you there on Saturday!!! 3

6 Forty-Seven Norwegian Tourists as our Guests! This event was a combined effort between Inger in Norway and your president which started back in Aug We kept in touch for over one year and with lots of last-minute s for confirmation, Tour Guide Inger-Torill Kirkeby and the group arrived by bus at 6:15 promptly. Our members met them waving Norwegian flags as the bus drove into the parking lot! The lodge hosted the 47 Norwegians to a Pulled Pork Sandwich dinner, complete with salads, calico beans (thanks, Bev K!) and pie and cake with whipped cream or ice cream for dessert! (Tusen takk to all who donated pies and cake for dessert!) Some of our guests were near fluent in English; some not so much. This balanced out with our members, as there were a few somewhat fluent in Norwegian and a lot of us not so much. But, rooted in a shared heritage, we all did well communicating and had a good time! Most of the Norwegians were from the area in SW Norway near Stavanger. The Norwegian guests appreciated our lodge and all that we have done to make it our own; the library, the store, the rosemaling, and the trolls. We offered some of our extra books to them, and in appreciation, the Norwegians gifted us with 2 books on Stavanger (where most of them hail from) for our library. Tusen takk! The President recently heard back from Inger-Torill Kirkeby that they all arrived home safe and healthy and enjoyed their 2- week trip to CO, NM, KS, and TX. She is now busy planning a trip now for the SW United States. (p.s. Come see the books in our library!!) 6
