JANUARY 2019 From the President As we look forward to 2019, I reflect on the past months. We welcomed new members, we had a great fundraiser in our Fall Fashion Show and we enjoyed several annual events: our October speaker from the League of Women Voters, the Boynton Beach Holiday Parade and our Past Presidents Tea in December. Annette Phelps drove Jean Nolan s car for the Parade while Michele Walter and I carried the banner. Terry Markey organized a beautiful tea with delicious contributions from our members. The First Baptist Church was already decorated for the season, but our sparkling silver and red poinsettias added to the decor. Debra Tucker s welcome for all the members who joined during the 2018 year and Carolyn Schoch s Memorial Service were beautiful. We are now looking forward to January. Our Highwaymen Art Show and Sale is a very special event. We have 5 original Highwaymen artists that will bring their paintings to the show: Curtis Arnett, Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, Isaac Knight, Doretha Hair Truesdell and possibly Willie Reagan. Those paintings and prints will be available Community Caring Center Kay Baker for sale. For those who don t know who they are, they were a group of black artists who were not allowed to show their paintings in galleries during the 1960s. They would set up along Federal Highway and sell their paintings of the Florida landscapes. Many of Boynton Beach businesses now have these original paintings in their offices and stores. The CRA is letting us display the painting that Mary Ann Carroll gave to us several years ago. We hope this event might be the beginning of an annual show featuring local artists. We will have a Membership table at this event. We need members to greet people and help with potential members. The hours are from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, January 19 at the First Presbyterian Church at 235 SW 6 th Ave. here in Boynton Beach. See the flyer in this issue and call me if you can help for an hour or two Even if you can t help, please plan to visit that day and bring your friends. So far I have delivered 3 grocery bags of donations in October and 4 in December. Hope we can increase that in the coming year. Thank you for your support and generosity in this important program.. Terry Markey

The poinsettia table pieces, the colorful tablecloths, the silver candelabra and tea servers created a festive mood. The assortment of finger foods were enjoyed by all. A special thanks to all who helped set and clean up. Everyone appeared to enjoy the event. Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy New Year to all. (see pg 5) Terry Markey JAN 4. JOANNE KRIESANT WELD JAN 5...DENISE CHAMBERLAIN JAN MADELYNE LENNY JAN 21...SUSAN THEIN BIRTHDAYS FEB 4 FEB 6 HIGHWAYMEN ART SHOW DEBRA TUCKER PATRICIA KROPP I am very excited about our Highwayman Art Show that is scheduled for Saturday, January 19 from 11 am to 3 pm. We are co-sponsoring it with the Boynton Beach Historical Society, and it will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 235 SW 6 th Avenue in Boynton Beach. Doretha Hair Trusdell, the widow of one of the original Highwaymen, Alfred Hair, has been my contact in arranging this event. Four or five of the original artists will be displaying their paintings: Al Black, Curtis Arnett, Mary Ann Carroll, Isaac Knight and possibly Willie Reagan. Doretha will have Alfred Hair s paintings as well as hers. We may even have one of the artists executing a painting that day. Many things are in the planning stage, but we will need members to help with organizing and greeting. We also will set up a Membership table and need members to be there to answer questions and encourage membership. The Church members will handle coffee and snacks. The Historical Society will help with publicity, but we also need to do our part in getting the word out. We will have flyers that our members can distribute. The event is free to the public, and both the Historical Society and the Presbyterian Church hope that this is the beginning of an annual Art Event. We are not charging the artists any fees, nor are we asking them to give us a percentage of their sales. I am putting a copy of one of Alfred Hair s paintings on a poster which Doretha will have many of the original Highwaymen sign. Copies of this poster can sell for $10. Let me know if you can help us with planning or help on the day of the event. Kay Baker,

3 P A G E 3 B W C F O C U S J A N U A R Y Raisin' Cain Tour Boynton Woman's Club - Boynton Beach Garden Club Thursday Feb 14, :15 AM meet in the middle of the Plaza where Barnes & Noble is located on Congress between Boynton & Old Boynton Beach Blvd. The trip includes the bus, tour, lunch at the Clewiston Country Club and gratuities all free covered by the Florida Sugar Cane League. A $15.00 charge payable to BWC has been added for incidentals. It will take about an hour and half to Clewiston where the official tour begins. We will have discussions on the bus on the way over. Overview first stop Clewiston Chamber of Commerce for a short history of the area, stroll through the museum housed in the chamber then pick up our tour guide. The tour will provide how sugar is made from field to pantry and citrus grown and harvested in south Florida, the history and development of the Glades area and more. Tour returns about 4:30 p.m. For reservations call Barbara Grimes at GUESTS ARE NOW INVITED. ARTS & CRAFTS LUNCHEON I want to draw your attention to our annual Arts & Crafts Show to be held in the First Baptist Church on Jan. 24. If you are exhibiting anything in this show, we have to ask you to get to the building by 10:00. The Judges will be there to get the ribbons distributed readily, before the rest of our members arrive for lunch at 11:30. I know you will have looked at the section in our Yearbook, pages 35-38, regarding all the categories. Check this out and notice the tremendous number of categories you could enter into. There are so many categories including leather working, flower arranging, photography, and drawing to mention only a very few. As I have said so very many times before, if you have any craft of some sort, or a photo, please call me ( ) if you have any questions. Please be advised that the first place ribbon winning items in our competition will then be taken up to our Dist. 10 meeting in Stuart in March. I hope we have a lot of items for our Judges to see. Since this will be a "subs & salad" luncheon (tea & water) with a cost of $8, you will need to call Kay Baker or kay@aboardkibon.com to make your reservation. Pat Kropp and Tam Piper
