Peterson 1350 Xenia St Apt. C-314 Denver, CO President s Message Greetings and best wishes for a Wonderful Holiday Season! On Saturday, Nov 17 th, we had our first SATURDAY AFTERNOON GENERAL MEETING! Remember, we will be holding Saturday meetings for December, January and February before reverting back to Monday evenings again. Usually at Monday night meetings, we get an attendance of about 25 members. On this last Saturday, we had 39 members! That s an increase of 50% of our average general meeting attendance for the past year. Does this mean we like the meetings in the afternoon rather than Monday night with a potluck? Or did you all turn out because we had our elections on Saturday? Whatever your reason was, thank you for being there! Your officers, old and new, need to know you support and appreciate them. And speaking of elections, the membership approved of all the returning officers and appointees as well as the new ones recommended by the nominating committee. The new and returning officers and appointees are listed in this newsletter. Thank you, Connie Bartram, Perry Monkelien, and Barb Bessesen for serving on that committee! Perry Monkelien also gave a presentation at the meeting about the difference in attitudes politically before and during the Nazi occupation in regards to rural and city inhabitants of Norway. There are some good books in the library. Ask Perry! As usual for winter, we have a lot of events lined up for you; Trollheim Family Jul Party, Zone 8 Membership Seminar, Ski for Light, Trollheim s Lutefisk Dinner and Barnelopet. I hope you can share your time by volunteering for or attending any of these great events! Take a look at the calendar on the front page or read this newsletter for more info. Merry Christmas! Membership: 247 December General Meeting Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 2 pm Let s Have Some Holiday Cheer! Our December meeting will be held directly following the Trollheim Family Jul Party which starts at 10 am and goes until 1:30 pm. You can come to both events and rsvp for lunch; $8. If you want to just come to the meeting, that s fine, too; we start at 2 pm. There will be no potluck at this general meeting. But finger foods, snacks, or desserts would be a nice treat! This general meeting is all about good cheer among our members. We will have some time for visiting and watch a movie, Christmas in Norway. We ll be seeing you on Saturday, December 15 th! 2

4 Butikken News We had a successful Christmas Fair, even better this year than last year! New and replacement merchandise has been arriving since the fair so come in and check it out. Thanks go to our helpers for the past two months - Doris Sundet, Syrena Plakke, Bruce Bailey, Dani East, Kari Jorgensen, Ken Perley, David Sveum and Michael Homan. We couldn't keep up this store without you. This year we have frozen lutefisk - 1-3/4 lbs. in a vacuum-sealed package. Lefse is also available. Our vendor made a mistake and sent us lingonberries in an 11-pound container. At the time of this writing, we have one container left at a discounted price. Give us a call if you are interested and we will put it aside for you. You may want to break it down and share with friends. Management Team: Joan, Carolyn and Alice Rosemaling Classes, Spring 2019 Rosemaling Classes, given by Louise Bath, will start again at SON Trollheim Lodge again on Saturday, February 2nd. The time is 9-12:30 and cost is $15 per class. A percentage of this goes to the Lodge. This session we will study the Os Style. Last June I travelled with a Vesterheim Folk Art Tour to Norway and Sweden. There I spent two days taking a class from Hjordis Juvik (an expert in the Os Style) at the Lyngheim Museum south of Bergen. So, I will be passing on to this class some of what I learned from her. I will have a variety of surfaces to paint on, including a traditional Os tray, a small jewelry box and a plate. Or bring a piece you own to paint. This class will require some knowledge of rosemaling. However, if you are a beginner, I plan to have two morning classes in late January (Jan 12 and 26) to get you started. Beginners can then transition to the regular classes. Please me at lbath25@comcast.net or phone me at if you will be coming to the beginner s classes or regular classes. I hope to see you there. Louise Bath Great Norwegian Adventure to Cast its 10th Season The world s nicest reality show, Alt for Norge known in English as The Great Norway Adventure is about to cast its 10th season. In this heritage-based reality show, a dozen Norwegian-Americans fly to their ancestral homeland to compete in a variety of culture-related challenges. The challenges range from culinary feats such as eating sea urchin, to the adventurous challenge of spending a proper Påskeferie (Easter break) atop a snowy mountain. Most of the content is new to the contestants, as they cannot have traveled to Norway after the age of 15, and are discouraged from learning the language beforehand. The Norwegian viewership can t get enough of the Americans fun-loving openness and fascination with the country that their ancestors left behind. In one episode, the contestants are given bunads from their ancestral region, causing many of them to well up with tears. The show portrays cast members in a positive light, without editing clips together to create interpersonal drama. For many of the challenges, the contestants do better when they cooperate with others. Despite the feel-good vibe, one cast member is eliminated in each episode, with the overall winner taking home $50,000 and having a chance to meet their living relatives. Before a contestant goes home, they receive a copy of their family tree, usually at their ancestral farm. The deadline to apply for Season 10 is December 2. Applicants must have some Norwegian ancestry and be at least 18 years old. Contestant hopefuls can apply online. Follow Alt for Norge and watch video clips on Facebook. 4

6 The 2018 Trollheim Christmas Fair Over seven hundred shoppers passed thru the threshold during November 2nd and 3 rd for the annual 2018 Trollheim Christmas Fair. Twelve vendors were present showing their wares that were displayed in good taste. Everything from the art of rosemaling to hand made Norwegian dolls made by Linda Smith s 96-year old mother who resides in Hillsboro, ND, who stills drives her car and makes Buttermilk donuts. The dolls sold in four hours. Vesterheim Lodge of Boulder sold Norwegian cookies plus their hand-made items that they work on during the year. The rosemalers, Diane Edwards, Nina Ehlers and Louise Bath, displayed their art of design, color and creative free hand painting. The Danish Sisterhood with handmade items and a creative display of their Danish items including a raffle-selling tickets for a Danish boy and girl in the Danish costumes posed dancing. Bev King (me!) was the winner; I was overwhelmed to tears! Plus, Hannah Jespersen, a Danish designer of trinkets that are hand-made, and her close friend Linda George (Collectable Clauses) master knitter of mittens, scarves, and paints a tree ornament for each month of the year. Another master knitter is Beth Liscomb; knits scarves, pulse-warmers and mittens. Ron Taylor an excellent wood carver of wildlife, plus lefse turners, and much more. Let us not forget the Dameklubben, the ladies group at Trollheim with their creative items, art, knitting, jewelry and much more. Thank you, Barb Hessel for ordering and delivery of the bread. The Christmas Fair has ambitious volunteers that specialize in arriving at 8:00 am on Friday and Saturday to assemble twenty loaves of bread into two types of open face sandwiches. They are: Carol Zablocki, Ruth Peterson, Sandra Hagevik, Jim Hagevik, Sarah & Dale Hughes, and Donna Robinson who arriving with a cane explained her tumble in a parking garage injuring her knee, and wrist. She never gives up; a strong lady. The servers were Thora and Jim Arrvig, & Kevin Mebust, plus the kitchen crew who pitched in on Friday to expedite the serving line. Many thanks to John and Carol Neverdahl for taking care of admissions at the main door; they are loyal members of Trollheim. Thank you, Ken Perley for manning the Butikken entrance, you are appreciated for all you do for Trollheim. Thanks to Bev Moe, the cashier, plus her special attitude and professionalism with the customer. Also, a thank you to our president Elaine Homan for overseeing that our guests were well taken care of and happy. Hat s off to all of you for your help and patience. Guests asked for Norsk meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, and riskrem for the Christmas Fair in Lord willing and the creek don t rise, we will fulfill your wish. Thank you. Bev King Give the Gift of Heritage: From Luella Grangaard, District Six President Christmas is when I really remember my Norwegian heritage. That was the time of the year we had lefse and meatballs that grandma Grangaard made. Of course, there was lutefisk. We read the Christmas story every year. And I remember the gifts and Santa, but now as an adult I wish I had learned more about my heritage growing up. That my Norwegian heritage and culture was more than lefse and something we celebrated only at Christmastime. It would have been a great gift. Heritage is a very special gift to share with family and friends. Those of you reading this realize this because you are a Sons of Norway member. This year give the gift of a membership to Sons of Norway. It is very easy to do. You can do this online or call Sons of Norway ext and sign up a family member or a friend. Have a joyful holiday season. Luella 6

7 Table Prayer It s the season for Thanks; not only for our families, but our friends, our country, our homes, and all the many blessings bestowed upon us. We are also thankful for the peace and joy of this Season! You can practice this prayer and pass it down to your children and grandchildren as a verbal piece of their heritage!
