COURSE DESCRIPTION This curse gives attentin t the essential nature and vcatin f the Church as Gd's called peple. Students are challenged t rethink the missin f the Church, mving beynd traditinal assumptins, and relating the missin t a mdern/pstmdern cntext. Fcus will be given t cuntering pluralism and the new paganism, determining a biblical strategy fr accmplishing the missin, develping a scial cnscience, putting tgether a glbal apprach t ministry, and creating the structures fr achieving redemptive influence. 2 credit hurs. While still allwing great scheduling flexibility, prgress reprts help us help yu shuld yu begin t fall behind. Assignment summaries and links fr uplading assignments. Befre the end f the first week f the sessin, yu need t lg nt the nline learning center t cmplete and uplad the curse affirmatin file. By federal law, we nw need t ensure that students participate in curses fr the full length f the curse. S failure t cmplete the curse affirmatin ntime will result in a lss f curse pints and may impact yur financial aid eligibility. Students will receive n-time cmpletin pints fr finishing their curse wrk accrding t the schedule. This means students in the 8 week sessins are required t have all their curse wrk int their curse instructr by the end f week 7. Students in the 16 week sessins are required t have all their wrk int their curse instructr by the end f week 15. 3 Mnday f the final week may be subject t a late penalty f up t 10% per day. N nline cmpletin pints will be granted after that time. 4. Curse Instructr. Yu will be assigned a curse instructr wh will participate as apprpriate in classrm activities; review, grade, and prvide feedback n curse assignments; and interact with yu n any questins yu have abut the curse. When yu receive yur curse materials, yu will als receive cntact infrmatin fr yur curse instructr. Please cntact yur curse instructr within tw weeks f yur curse start date and maintain regular cntact thrughut the curse. ASSIGNMENTS 1. Participatin Requirements. Fr each lessn, cmplete the items as instructed in yur learning center, and submit the prgress reprt verifying that yu ve dne s. These prgress reprts are ur primary means f verifying yur attendance, and each is wrth up t ne pint tward yur final grade. If the prgress reprt is submitted by the due date n yur curse schedule, yu ll receive 100% f the reprt grade. If yu submit the prgress reprt late, but within tw weeks f the due date, yu will receive 80%. If yu submit the prgress reprt mre than tw weeks late, yu will receive 50%. And, f curse, if yu fail t submit a prgress reprt at all, yu will receive 0%. Certain changes are allwed within the curse schedule, t allw fr flexibility. In additin, yu are t cmplete three activities that will allw us t verify yur participatin at key pints within the curse, in cmpliance with federal regulatins. Failure t cmplete these activities within the designated times may impact the amunt r timing f federal financial aid yu receive. First week participatin: Within the first week f the psted curse dates, cmplete and uplad the affirmatin file. On-time verificatin. By the date listed in the schedule, submit yur final assignments and cmplete the verificatin assignment, t cnfirm that yu finished the curse wrk n time. Curse evaluatin and reflectin. Within the final week f the psted curse dates, cmplete the curse evaluatin and reflectin assignment; a link will be ed t yu at that time. Read ne bk that addresses culture and redemptive influence (frm the list later in this syllabus, r with the apprval f yur curse instructr). 4 Time: 5 hurs estimated time Pints: 30 pints pssible. 3. Cultural Analysis. Select a film, TV series, r bk (t be apprved by instructr) that has made (is making) a substantial impact n culture, with the aim f the fllwing: a) determining what is behind the screenwriter, directr, authr s intent b) determining what it is saying abut ur age, c) finding the pints f cntact by which ne might engage in a discussin pinting t redemptin. Summarize yur findings in 7-8 pages. Fllw the fllwing frmat: Brief Descriptin (1-2 pages); Why yu selected this film/bk (1 page); What it is saying abut ur age (2 pages); An analysis f what it says in light f Scripture (1 page); A strategy fr relatinally using this wrk t build a bridge fr the gspel, with questins yu wuld ask that culd eventually lead t sharing the gspel (2 pages). Time: 15 hurs estimated time Pints: 100 pints pssible. 4. Cunterculture Paper. Write a paper answering the questin, Hw Can Fllwers f Christ Be a Cunterculture fr the Cmmn Gd? using the mdel fund in The Christian Visin Prject. We re asking fr specific ways in which we as Christ fllwers influence and make a psitive difference in ur wrld. The gal is fr yu t cme up with an idea that wuld be truly cuntercultural and yet be fr the cmmn gd. A gd article t get a sense f the prject is by Lauren Winner, wh addressed the issue f sleep in a B&C article getting the amunt Gd designed us t have which runs cunter t ur culture that is sleep deprived. This nt nly represents creatinal guidelines (Ps 127), but it is ultimately fr the cmmn gd. Gd calls us t smething radical, and yet life is s much better when we cmply. The article can be fund at n the learning center. Chse smething radical -- smething Jesus calls us t -- that ultimately serves humanity. It takes wrk t cme up with an idea, but the aim is t help yu make a difference, shwing the wrld that fllwing Christ is what we are all desperate fr. The paper shuld be 5-7 pages in length, duble-spaced. Time: 10 hurs estimated time Pints: 50 pints pssible. 5. Discussin Frum. A discussin frum allws yu t share yur thughts with, and receive feedback frm, yur curse instructr and ther students in the curse. Yu will make three riginal pstings thrughut the semester, and respnd t the pstings f three ther students.
