1 THE FRIEND Contact Information Phone Numbers Office: Pastor Chris (c): Web Page Addresses: Pastor Christine Anttila Youth and Christian Education Coord.- Paige Williams Secretary/Web Page- Jakki Johnson Music- Jennifer Simonson Parish Public STAFF OFFICE HOURS: Pastor Christine: Mon, Wed, Thurs 9am noon, or by appt Paige Williams (Youth/Ed): Tues, Wed, Thurs 9am noon Jennifer Simonson (Music): Mon 9am noon Jakki Johnson (Secretary): Mon Fri 8am 2:00pm Serving God, God s People, and Our Community Newsletter of Our Savior s Lutheran Church October 2015 From Pastor Chris Pen WHAT COULD HAPPEN in the church if we shared our faith and finances without expecting a return? You know how sometimes while typing you hit the Caps Lock button by mistake, and when you look up at the page your own words seem to be SHOUTING at you? WHAT COULD HAPPEN? is the part of the question above that s shouting for my attention; but it s the latter clause without expecting a return that has lodged itself in my consciousness since the question was raised by Bishop Aitken at our Lake Superior Conference. I don t know is my honest response. But if hard questions are The Teacher s best tool, this one might well lead us through some of the most important spiritual lessons of a lifetime. Some other hard questions have been lurking around the edges of my brain too. Are the majority of our resources really focused on sharing Christ s love for the world? Do we dare take a chance on giving our time, talents and possessions to people who may never darken the doors of our church building? Have we become dedicated to maintaining a building that diverts resources away from the needs of others? Are we truly serving from a standpoint of gratitude for God s abundance, or are we afraid God will run out of goodness? Giving without counting cost or calculating gain may not be the best business strategy and it may sound like a scary premise for a stewardship drive. But the church is one non profit organization that really does exist solely for the purpose of giving itself away. And Jesus promises that we ll be blessed in doing so ( It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35). The Bible is filled with reassurances that God will provide all that we need; it s also rich with reminders that we are God s agents in providing for others. I m not much for shouting, but I do invite you to wonder with me, WHAT COULD HAPPEN?! and I look forward to seeking together as we learn what God has to teach us. In Christ s love, Pastor Christine

3 Paige s Page In my last article I wrote about change and I focused on the changes the congregation and the church as a whole are facing. I asked you all to pray and to be open to change. I think we did a great job. On Rally Sunday, we all gathered to welcome the Sunday school students, we welcomed the choir back, worshiped together, and then eat some food together at the Rally Day Picnic. We also welcomed three new Sunday school students that will be joining us this year. Please keep them in your prayers, that they will have a great year with us as they make new friends. Rally Day was a great way to start the new school year. Let s keep this momentum going! Family Faith night will be continuing this fall every second Wednesday of the month. If you want a free meal, fun, games, and a relaxed worship gathering please join us at 5:30. One of my favorite things about worship and church is music. We have so many talented members, we are hoping to create our new group PB&J, we are Praise Band and Jam! We want to welcome anyone who loves to sing, or play music, to get the church moving! The plan for PB&J is to play in the talent show October 24 th and then being playing every Act up Sunday I hope this will bring some fun into the church and give people another creative outlet while having fun! If you are interested please call or me or P.C. There are so many other great things going on at church it never seems to stop! We have had a successful Pork Dinner, an amazing adult education class, and even a YOGA class! Changes and new beginnings can be such a great thing. So I ask you all to continue in prayer and high spirits this fall and please get yourself a pumpkin spice flavored anything to help bring in the new season! Tuesday, October 6, 2015: 6:00 Team meetings 7:00 PPC meeting Fri-Sat, October 9-10, 2015: RUMMAGE SALE to benefit the church s General Fund. Bring your things to church anytime. It needs to be to the office by 10:00am in a legible format.
4 Thank You from John Erdahl: Dear OSLC, My history at OSLC dates back to 1968 when I became a member; I want to thank the Dodo Erickson family for that. In Jr High I accepted the Lord on a youth retreat with Rick Benson. It was after I graduated from Denfeld in 1979 that I started working at Our Savior s. It is bittersweet to leave after 36 years of service, but I am excited to start a new chapter in my life. I have recently started a new job at Franciscan Health Center as the Environmental Service Director. I want to thank the staff and the congregation for all of their love and support. Love in Christ, John A. Erdahl from Arrowhead Parish Nurse Assn: Thank you so much for the most generous donation to the Arrowhead Parish Nurse Assn. We truly feel blessed by this and have noted the designation for cholesterol-check supplies! Thank you for the support of your own Parish Nurse Ministry and those being served. God s Peace to you, and blessings in all you do, Pam Franklin, APNA Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the U.S. than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include * Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older * Genes - there are 2 genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested. * Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55 Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts. Breast self awareness allows you to be proactive in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. PARISH NURSE OFFICE HOURS Tuesday, October 6, 11:00 am 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 20, 11:00 am 1:00 pm Sunday, October 25, 11:30 am. 55 PLUS The October 55 Plus meeting will join with other members of the community at the Evergreen Senior Center (5830 Grand Ave) for a music program by our own Gordy Peterson! The program begins at 10:30 with lunch to follow at 11:30. You MUST register for the lunch with AEOA ( ) no later than Wednesday, October 7. Let Anita Fraundorf know that you are attending and the Parish Nurse program will pay for your lunch. (You may attend just the music program without registering for the lunch). Hope to see you there!
