1 Non Profit Org. U.S. Postage Paid Duluth, MN Permit No The Friend Serving God, His People, and our Community September, 2012 OUR SAVIOR S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 4831 GRAND AVENUE DULUTH, MN RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Psalm 19:1 This scripture verse was one of the first committed to my childhood memory, a time in which the words Sputnik, Space-race, and Neil Armstrong occupied a large portion of my imagination. I remember gazing up at the summer night-skies, squinting hard to see traces of a large, filmy God-hand at work. Having an active imagination helped, but so did growing up in a home in which my father was also my biology teacher, where books about geography and geology lined the shelves, and daily farm- and forest-life taught me the fundamental connection between God's world and my subsistence. Since the beginning of time, humans have tried to explain the world and our place in it. Controversy between the disciplines of science and theology are nothing new to the modern world. But the ever-present rift between faith and reason has widened to a chasm. On one hand, intelligent people of faith argue against all scientific evidence; on the other, brilliantly creative minds close off all access to the questions of life's mysteries. Very often scientific discoveries have been the source of deep conflict in the Church, and frequently at great personal cost to scientists themselves. The stories of these brillian men and women are sometimes humorous, and more often tragic; the Church has sometimes been Reason's champion, and at other times not so reasonable. I'd like to explore these things together: 1. through a feature I'll call Scientists in the Spotlight during Sunday worship in September and October. I hope to learn some fun facts about the brilliant minds of our time, and to shed some light on this intricate and fascinating world God made. And 2. Sunday morning Adult Education series on Science and Religion, beginning with Is Anybody Out There? on Sunday, Sept 23 at 9am. We'll touch on the history of the scientific method and its influence on modern religious institutions, tease out some tensions and explore common ground between science and scripture. My primary resources will be two books written by scientist and Christian, John K. Polkinghorne, Quarks, Chaos and Christianity and Belief in God in an Age of Science. You're welcome to borrow my copy, and/or to order your own copy for personal reference. Purchase or reading the books are not a requirement for the class. Just come with the open heart and inquisitive mind God gave you! Peace and Curiosity be with you, Pastor Chris

Flood Relief Efforts Our Savior's has been active in responding to the needs of those affected by the June flood. Twelve families signed up to prepare hotdish and desserts for 300 people involved in cleanup efforts on June 29 at the Moose Lake Community Center. Local businesses also graciously stepped up to help, with Cullen Flaherty of Blackwoods- Proctor providing coleslaw, and Texas Roadhouse providing rolls and cinnamon butter for 300 servings. On Sunday July 1 an offering of $80 was gathered for Terri Bunnell, coordinator of the West Duluth CHUM Foodshelf. Terri's home sustained significant damage when her basement flooded. Four families have been offering cleanup and reconstruction throughout the summer months. Terri is grateful for the help, and happy to report that her home is now structurally stable. Northern Bell Chimes provided lunch for workers the first weeks of July, along with help to salvage household items, at the home of Chris and Marilyn Hull, whose house was nearly a total loss. Our Savior's continues to provide meals for reconstruction crews, as the work of rebuilding has begun. Names have been noted, but couldn't possibly be printed here without neglecting those who've been quietly ministering. Thanks to God for everyone's generosity, and for the many creative responses to neighbors and friends in times of need. We give generously because we need to respond to God's gracious gifts of life!

Grand Avenue Slammers Finish the Season We were fortunate to have a softball team from Our Savior s this summer: The Grand Avenue Slammers! A big thank you to Randy Nelson, team manager, and Alice DeLawyer who helped notify the team of their games. The players included: Cheryl Reynolds, her son, Adam and his friend, Brandon Johnson; Bob Jenko and his sons Alex & Riley; Mike Conby; Amanda Lepisto and Nick Plante and Amanda s nephew Matt Lepisto; Dave Thornton and his sons Jon and Peter and grandson Matt and granddaughter, Grace; John Jacobson and his daughter Theresa; Eric Beckner; Pastor Chris and her daughter, Kaisa; cousins Chris Mielke and Lynne Muscatello; Alice DeLawyer and manager Randy Nelson. Think about joining up next year! Fans are always appreciated. An end of the year party was hosted on August 12th at 4pm by Mike & Jen Conboy. The Evening included Bocce Ball, Ladder Ball and a Potluck Picnic. A good time was had by all!
4 Windows! Have you noticed two new windows in the west wall of the offices? These were installed with donated money from Herman & Esther Schroeder. The Property Team has formed a committee to start a fund appeal to replace the windows on the 1st and 2nd levels of the Sunday School Wing of the building. We will be informing you of the plans and costs in the near future. Ken Miller, Window Committee Chair. Ministry Team Spotlight Each Sunday in September and October we will put the spotlight on a different team on the Parish Planning Council. Each team will share a short video presentation of their projects and activities during worship along with offering ways for everyone to participate in the life of the congregation. 5 Parish Planning Committee Minutes DATE: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 PRESENT: Anita Fraundorf, Shari Mlodozyniec, Pastor Chris, Cathy Hannan, Jonathan Thornton, Roxanne Bijold, John Jacobson, Jan Thornton, Mike Simonson, Jen Conboy, Sherm Carlson, ABSENT: David Miller, Roger Lofald, Theresa Jacobson The meeting was called to order by President Jonathan Thornton at 6:37 pm. Devotions by Jennifer Conboy. Secretary s Report: Minutes from the May 1, 2012 meeting were reviewed. Motion to approve with corrections by Mike Simonson, seconded by Shari. MP Treasurer s Report: Current checkbook balance is $ Overdue bills and benevolences total $ New Business Memorial Funds (also called Dedicated Funds): A standard procedure is needed for money that doesn t go to the general fund. Jan distributed a list of 28 such funds she is currently keeping on the books. The treasurer needs a name attached to each of these funds to authorize spending of the money. A related issue is that the church lacks a procedure for when beneficiary funds come in with no direction from the giver for disbursement. A policy is needed for these instances, perhaps offering a list of specific church needs, that the giver may wish to fund with the money given. The church bylaws give some guidance on this. It appears that the Stewardship Team can decide where to allocate the money, if the giver has not specified. Also need to make sure a thank you from the church is sent. Sunday morning worship attendance: The PPC held a brainstorming session to generate ideas for increasing attendance. All ideas were welcome. Ideas included: *Send a welcome/invite card to people new to the neighborhood. *Send invitations to confirmands back to about *Attend other services (i.e. Vineyard) and gather ideas *More regular pot lucks & Bring-a-friend Sundays 4 times a year (5 th Sunday months). *Community movie night at the church *Remove some of the rear pews and add a coffee bar. Fall Programming: Jen Conboy reviewed plans for the church this fall. A suggestion was made to use the Power Point to highlight one ministry team and their activities/week, as part of the preservice announcements. Ongoing Business Constitution & Bylaws: Will not be ready for a vote at the congregation meeting. Shari, John & Jonathan are working as a small group to simplify, consolidate, and standardize the bylaws. They plan to bring their work to the Aug PPC meeting. Pastor s Report: Pastor Chris has performed 14 funerals, 2 weddings, and confirmed 5, in the past five months. Announcements: Thanks you: To outgoing team chairs Jen Conboy, Debbie Jacobson, and Dave Miller Your service to the church was much appreciated. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:10pm Date of Next Meeting Tues, Aug 7 at 6:30 Minutes Submitted by: Roxanne Bijold Order Your Fall Bulbs Now! Have beautiful tulips, daffodils, and crocuses bloom in your garden every spring and help the church raise money! By ordering your fall bulbs through the church you can help us raise money to replace the windows along the back and east sides of the church. The fall FlowerPower fund raising catalog has a lot of bulbs that are hardy in our area. And if you don't have a garden of your own you could consider ordering flowers for the church gardens! You can buy bulbs for the church in honor or in memory of someone. Volunteers have already committed to planting and tending these gardens. Catalogs are available in the church office or after church during fellowship time. See Jennifer Simonson if you would like to place an order. St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services Child Foster Care has a critical need to recruit new child/ youth foster homes. Our goal is to increase the number of child foster homes we have to provide additional options to meet the increasing needs of children in foster care. We need both regular foster families who would be open to providing ongoing care for a child or children, and respite foster families who could provide care 1-2 weekends a month. If this is something you think you might be interested in or if you have ever thought about, please contact Jessie Schunk at Ext. 7793
6 Marriage Encounter Weekend November Get away from the everyday demands of the world so the two of you can really focus on each other. You ll spend two nights in a comfortable hotel and enjoy five delicious meals from Friday at 7pm to Sunday at 5pm. Four presenting couples, including a Lutheran clergy couple, give a series of presentations followed by questions the couples discuss in the privacy of their own hotel room. There is no counseling and no group sharing. It s great for couples who already have a good marriage and want to enrich their relationship, but it also does wonders for those marriages that have lost their luster through the years of child rearing and work obligations. For more information or to sign up for this event contact Larry & Coke Guilfoile at or visit Healthy Family Events Are Back! Join us on Monday, September 17th for a light supper followed by a Simple First Aid presentation. Invite your friends and family members. Everybody should know some first aid. You never know Community Reading Opportunity The Feminist Theoogies Reading/ Discussion Group invites women and men interested in Post-Vatican II theologies to join our Reading/Discussion Group. We meet once a month, September May, usually on the thurd Sunday, from 1-2:15pm in Rockhurst at St. Scholastica Monastery. Our study group focuses on post-vatican II liberation and feminist theological studies, which examine such issues as the language used in name God; the effect of theologies and patriarchal systems and attitudes in government, politics, economics, and social structures; and the relationship of God to the contemporary world, to nature and to peoples. A sample of our readings in the past years include: Catherine Keller s Spirituality in Quantum Universe, Diarmid O Murchu s Catching Up with Jesus; and Sallie McFague s Models of God: Theology for an Ecological, Nuclear Age. For Fall 2012, participants have chosen to study Ann Hunt s Trinity: Insights from the Mystics (2010). For details contact Sister Sarah Smedman at or ssmedman@earthlink.net There are so many people that do so much around the church, most often behind the scenes. This is a page to recognize those who help get things done! So if you have anyone you would like to thank, just drop a note in my (secretary) box outside the office. Thank you to... *Dan & Pat Nilsen for hosting the fall youth gathering. *Dave Thornton for his continued help with Terri Bunnell s house that was damaged in the flood.. *Dean Herold, Dane Herold, Pastor Chris and Bart Smith for helping empty out Terri s basement. *YouthWorks! who came in and washed down our walls with bleach to get rid of the mold and emptied stuff into the dumpster. *Everyone who has helped get the sub basement and Fellowship Hall back in order after the flooding that occurred *Everyone who provided wood and food for our Summer Campfire Communion worships ************* Area Businesses who helped with food donations to make our meal for the people in Moose Lake possible. Cullen Flaherty of Blackwoods and Mark Prosen of Texas Road House Every 1st Tuesday Ruby s Pantry is an organization that picks up surplus food and other items from corporations and distributes it to those in need. People are asked to donate $15.00 and bring a couple of large containers, like laundry baskets, boxes or canvas bags. Anyone who eats qualifies for Ruby s Pantry. Ruby s Pantry is located at 8830 Idaho St in Morgan Park. Doors open at 3:30pm and distribution begins at 4:30pm. CHURCH NOTES WORTH KNOWING We receive money for each ink cartridge put into the box outside Fellowship Hall, by the Martin Luther Room. Collect them from your office, friends and relatives. NO EPSON PLEASE! The sign up sheet for flowers for the altar is on the bulletin board outside the church office. This is a great way to memorialize a loved one. The church office needs to know if your address or phone number has changed. Please put us on the list of people to tell that you have moved. This saves time, postage ($) and missed communications. Remember we are collecting glossy paper and magazines for Sunday School supplies. This is a fundraiser through New Page (paper mill).

Managing Concerns About Falls Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging is offering the 8 week class: A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls on Thursdays, beginning September 13th at 1pm in Martin Luther Room. Davin & Harriette Halli will lead this class. A workbook is provided and refreshments are served. The Parish Nurse funds will pay for these classes so there is no cost to you! Under the Radar: Hunger Here A Hunger Leader Training for All Saturday, September 22, am-3pm First Lutheran Church, Aitkin Focus: Domestic Hunger Come learn how ELCA hunger dollars are being used in northeastern Minnesota. Lively, interactive sessions will help you learn what hunger means in our communities, what has been done, and what actions are yet to be taken to conquer this problem. You may have attended a Hunger Leader Training in the past, but this event will provide you with new information, hands on experience, and the opportunity to share ideas and learn from others. There is no cost for this event but you do need to register by contacting the synod office with your name, address, phone number, and name of your congregation. A free will offering will be taken at lunch NE MN Synod: info@nemnsynod.org
