The goal of Spiritual Direction is to become more aware of God in your life. A Spiritual Direction session includes prayer, silence, and exploring God active in your life story. Spiritual Direction might occur in a group or individual session, or as part of a retreat. At Our Savior s we ll be forming a Spiritual Direction group to especially prepare people who might be willing to be a part of a future listening ministry as we seek to offer compassionate listening to our community during food pantry hours. On Thursday, February 15th, at 10am, Pastor Liz will lead an informational session about Spiritual Direction. On the Thursdays following, those who wish will commit to meeting once a week until everyone has had a chance to speak their story. Please talk to Pastor Liz with any questions. 2 Grace and peace to you, people of God at Our Savior s! February 14th is Valentine s Day. And Ash Wednesday. At first, I thought this was a weird coincidence, another example of the world s calendar and the church s calendar coming in conflict. (Do you go out to dinner or go to church?) But the more I think about it, I think it s perfect. Ash Wednesday gets a bad reputation as a day of dwelling on how bad we are. Maybe you ve experienced it as a day to be gloomy or grumpy. It s true that we focus on repentance, acknowledge that we aren t the ultimate power in our lives or the world, and call each other to live more fully into God s intention of right relationships. Most importantly, Ash Wednesday is about love. It s about the radical love of God. God loves each of us, fully knowing our failings and struggles. God loves us by sacrificing of Godself, coming to us, and proving God s love for us, rather than demanding we make ourselves worthy of affection. During worship, we mark ourselves with ash in the shape of the cross, not trying to be more than we are, but trusting that the love shown to us in Jesus life and death for us is enough. God s love extends even through death, (nothing) will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39). Romantic love isn t always so real or long-lasting. Those first dates were always about appearing better than I am. Finding the best clothes, doing hair, trying to smile and be funny (or at least interesting). It wasn t about showing all of who I was, just the parts I thought would be the most attractive. There s no pretension needed in our relationship with God. God has gifted us and forgiven us, so God knows all that is wonderful about us just as much as God knows the ways we ve fallen short of who we are intended to be. In my household, we celebrate Valentine s Day by remembering all those we love, all the relationships for which we are grateful. God created us to be in community and has placed many wonderful people in our lives. We are reminded to live with love for all people. Ash Wednesday helps us do that, as we practice saying we re sorry and as we hear God s call to live in just relationships. Looking at each other, marked by the cross, we know that each of us is a broken and beautiful being, loved by God, worthy of being loved by each other. Beginning with Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season to be renewed in God s love for us and renew our commitment to living in response to God s love. We start with our brokenness as the time God most loves us, so that we never need to fear we won t be enough. God chooses to love us now and forever. Let s live in God s love and share it with the world! -Pastor Liz Davis Pastor Contact through church office, or pastorliz@oursaviorsduluth.org Office Telephone: secretary@oursaviorsduluth.org Mon Tue. 9-2 Wed Thur. 9-2 Friday (Office Closed) Sexton Mon. & Fri. 8:00-1:00 The FRIEND Newsletter Editors Mike & Jenn Conboy Please submit news to jenniferconboy@hotmail.com or place in the Lay Ministry mailbox. 3 February 2018 Worship Lessons February 4, 2018 ~ Fifth Sunday after Epiphany In Isaiah it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars---- it is that God who strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus healing work we see the hand of the creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon's moth- -in-law, we are lifted up to health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of prayer. First Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31; Psalm: Psalm 147:1-11, 20c; Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-23 Gospel Reading: Mark 1:29-39 February 11, 2018 ~ Transfiguration of Our Lord (Last Sunday after Epiphany) The Sundays after Epiphany began with Jesus baptism and end with three disciples vision of his transfiguration. In Mark s story of Jesus baptism, apparently only Jesus sees the Spirit descending and hears the words from heaven. But now Jesus three closest friends hear the same words naming him God s beloved Son. As believers, Paul writes, we are enabled to see the God-light in Jesus' face, because the same God who created light in the first place has shone in our hearts to give us that vision. The light of God s glory in Jesus has enlightened us through baptism and shines in us also for others to see. First Reading: 2 Kings 2:1-12; Psalm: Psalm 50:1-6; Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 Gospel Reading: Mark 9:2-9 February 14, 2018 ~ Ash Wednesday Lent begins with a solemn call to fasting and repentance as we begin our journey to the baptismal waters of Easter. As we hear in today s readings, now is the acceptable time to return to the Lord. During Lent the people of God will reflect on the meaning of their baptism into Christ s death and resurrection. The sign of ashes suggests our human mortality and frailty. What seems like an ending is really an invitation to make each day a new beginning, in which we are washed in God s mercy and forgiveness. With the cross on our brow, we long for the spiritual renewal that flows from the springtime Easter feast to come. First Reading: Isaiah 58:1-12; Psalm : Psalm:51:1-17 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10 Gospel Reading: Matthew 6:1-6, February 18, 2018 ~ First Sunday in Lent On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah s family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are give in baptism is for the sake of the whole world. First Reading: Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm : Psalm 25:1-10; Second Reading: I Peter 3:18-22 Gospel Reading: Mark 1:9-15 February 25, 2018 ~ Second Sunday in Lent The second covenant in this year s Lenten readings is the one made with Abraham and Sarah: God s promise to make them the ancestors of many, with whom God will remain in everlasting covenant. Paul says this promise comes to all who share Abraham's faith in the God who brings life into being where there was no life. We receive this baptismal promise of resurrection life in faith. Sarah and Abraham receive new names as a sign of the covenant, and we too get new identities in baptism, as we put on Christ. First Reading: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16; Psalm : Psalm 22:23-31; Second Reading: Romans 4:13-25 Gospel Reading: Mark 8:
4 Worship in Lent During Sundays in Lent, our theme is Standing on the Promises of God. We ll gather around the Baptismal Font, where God promises us a place in God s family as a beloved child, with life in God forever. We ll gather around the Lord s Table, where God feeds us with the promise of life, love, and forgiveness Jesus fulfills for us in his death and resurrection. Our Bible readings and preaching will focus on the way God makes and keeps promises to God s people as a way of creating a relationship. Come and hear God s promises for you! Wednesdays in Lent, join for a 6 pm soup supper followed by 6:30 worship. This year, we re celebrating our partnership with local ELCA congregations as the area pastors travel among congregations to share their favorite Bible text and how it gives them hope and strength. This is a great opportunity to hear a bit more about our local congregations and give thanks that we are not alone in working for the gospel! We welcome to Our Savior s: on Feb. 21 Pastor Jeff Davis of Concordia Luth., Feb. 28 Pastor Peter Kowitz of United Luth., March 7 Pastor Phil Berge of Grace Luth., March 14 Pastor Rollie Bockbrader of Salem Luth., and on March 21 Pastor Liz Davis will return home to Our Savior s Lutheran. Ashes to Go Ash Wednesday is a holy day of communal repentance. We are reminded that we are not God, but are creatures. We fall short of our potential, we willfully do harm, and we will die. It s hard to acknowledge these things we try so hard to hide! On Ash Wednesday, we allow our brokenness to be out there, visible and public. No cover-up! We start from the dust and celebrate that God has given us all things. Absolutely everything belongs to God and comes from God- even our form and our life. Starting from our complete reliance on God s mercy towards us, we can hear anew God s call to respond to God s love for us by joining God in loving the world. Lent is a season to focus on spiritual practices so that we can live in better alignment with God s vision for our lives and the world. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to attend worship in the evening. Yet many people might benefit from the opportunity to acknowledge their brokenness and hear that God loves them in their brokenness. As we seek to serve God, God s people, and our community, we are offering an opportunity for people to experience the imposition (putting-on) of ashes and individual prayer. Ashes to Go will be set up outside, so that people can pull into our parking lot along the grass. They will receive ashes and prayer as well as an invitation to join the community for worship. People of Our Savior swe need your help! We d like there to be no fewer than two people for each shift. If you re willing to join Pastor Liz, she d really appreciate it. Ashes to Go- Wed Feb 14, 7-9am, and 2-4pm. Ashes and prayer also available inside 9-12pm. Short Term Studies by Pastor Liz Pastor Liz will be leading a variety of short-term studies. If you are interested in a topic, let Pastor Liz know a time that would work for you to participate. Lent: Faces of Christ explores how Jesus is present in our w orld and how we can live into the call to be Jesus presence in the world by sharing stories of ELCA World Hunger supported ministries. Mondays, Feb Mar. 26 7:45-8:45 am Upcoming short term studies continued on page 5 4
5 Upcoming Studies by Pastor Liz ELCA Study Documents: Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice open s a conversation about gender, patriarchy, and how our faith helps us think about and speak within the ongoing society-wide conversation marked by movements like #metoo. As part of this study, we ll learn what a Social Statement is and provide feedback to the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice as they further develop the social statement for presentation at the 2019 Churchwide Assembly. Reflecting the character of Christ This ser ies w ill look at Jesus public practices and action we might take to reflect Jesus action. We ll explore Jesus practices of healing, rebuking, demonstrating reflecting the character of Christ. This series will look at Jesus public practices and action we might take to reflect Jesus action. We ll explore Jesus practices of healing, denouncing, feeding, demonstrating, hospitality, generosity, and peacemaking. HONDURAS MISSION TRIP Dave Thornton has returned from another great mission trip to central Honduras where God continues to shower His blessings on all involved. The project work at the Kid s Ark International camp on Lake Yajoa continues to progress to provide improved services to all people enjoying opportunities to relax, have fun and commune with God. Work on the new dinning area which was started last fall has progressed to the point where it can be used to serve meals to groups and house gatherings. The camp was visited by over 300 kids and adults during our group s mission trip. We also had a chance to visit with other churches and missions in the area. All in all, God s work is truly active here. Thank you for all who helped to support the mission trip. 5
6 Church Deacon Hello! My name is Colleen Bernu. I am an endorsed Deacon candidate with our Synod. Deacons are Word and Service ministers, called and accountable as public leaders to serve with Word and Sacrament ministers (pastors) in equipping the church to meet the needs of the world. Deacons serve in specialized areas through specialized calls of service. My declaration of call is evangelism and mission. I live in the Sawyer community of the Fond Du Lac Indian Reservation with my husband and daughter. My hometown is Solon Springs, Wisconsin, and my husband is an Iron Ranger; we moved to the Reservation before our daughter was a year old. We are members of Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlton, MN, where, for roughly five years, I served in the ministry of discipleship/faith formation through programs that reached all ages. Currently, I serve on the task force developed by our Synod office as part of our Synod s commitment established at the 2017 Synod Assembly last spring to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery. Each of these experiences has offered me the opportunity to share in God s ministries of mercy and servant leadership to the world through the church. I am super excited to learn and grow through my field experience at Our Savior s. I will be with you for 10 months. I look forward to seeing how God will use this relationship to spread the liberating message of God s love for the world to our neighbors in West Duluth. I can t wait to get to know each of you. We will be welcoming Deacon Candidate Colleen Bernu on February 4th with a special welcoming liturgy during worship. She is beginning her learning and leading with us this month Feb. 3 ~ Faith Formation Cross Generational Class: Jesus Feeds Older youth and adults are invited to join the traditional confirmation age students as we explore Jesus feeding in the gospels. What are these stories of Jesus feeding and what do they tell us about God? How does Jesus feed us today? How do we reflect Jesus in feeding others? We re about forming relationships as we grow in faith together. Come and join in! 11:40-1:30, lunch included. Thank you to Kathy Janzig for preparing children s actvity bags for family member at funerals. Thank you for taking down Christmas decorations: Sandy Andler, Gary Erdahl, Larry and Alice Sommor, Beth Williams, Mary Unden, Barb Beverage, Dianne Wentz, Beth Duncan, Jenn Conboy, Cathy Hannan and Bill Fraundorf. Thank you to Our Savior s Lutheran Church: The residents at Renaissance House want to say thank you so much for the Christmas gifts. For some of the residents it had been a few years since they had gotten gifts on Christmas. Christmas morning was definitely more special with the gifts that were donated your church members. Again, Thank you! Renaissance Staff and Residents Thank you to Robert Jenko, for heading up the Renaissance Christmas gift project Thank you to Bill Fraundorf for all of his volunteer help around church. 6

10 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 13:4 10 Ways to Love 1. Listen without interrupting (Proverbs 1:8) He who answers before he hears-- his is the folly and the shame. 2. Speak without accusing. (Jam es 1:19) Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. 3. Give without sparing. (Proverb 21:26) All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing. 4. Pray without ceasing. (Colossians 1:9) For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. 5. Answer without arguing (Proverb 17:1) Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife. 6. Share without pretending (Ephesians 4:15) Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 7. Enjoy without complaint. (Philippians 2:14) Do everything without grumbling or arguing. 8. Trust without wavering. (Corinthians 13:7) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 9. Forgive without punishing. (Colossians 3:13) Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 10. Promise without forgetting (Proverbs 13:12) Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Dinner Club (Change of Date for February) Dinner Club will meet on Tuesday, February 13 th at Tappa Keg Inn, 7036 Grand Ave. Meet at the church parking lot at 5:45 to car pool.
