1 The FRIEND November 2017 Newsletter of Our Savior s Evangelical Lutheran Church 128 years in ministry Serving God, God s People, and Our Community Cross Generational Faith Formation Class: Lifelong Confirmation Begins Sunday, Nov. 5 ~ 11:45-1:30pm The Church is discovering that the traditional model of confirmation has been graduating teenagers out of the Church at a greater rate than it has been forming active participants in the Church. This isn t a trend we want to continue. Research suggests that the top predictor of continued youth involvement is building meaningful relationships with adult members, followed by faith practiced at home and participation in Sunday worship, youth group, VBS, and camp. Confirmation Faith Formation is about the church developing a grounding for growing disciples to ask questions that connect faith and life in a meaningful way. It culminates in a public profession of faith which is a response to God s promise and choice to choose the baptized as God s own child forever. Lutherans don t ask for people to prove their belief, but rely on God s proof of love for us in Jesus. After claiming us in baptism, God never leaves us. Confirmation has given youth an opportunity to be more serious in their faith and surrounded them with the support and joy of the congregation as they mature. Yet even adults experience questions and growth throughout their lives and need a space to encourage and support that continued faith formation. This year, you re invited to be a part of a new way of growing in faith. Families and individual are all invited: those of traditional confirmation age, those in upper elementary school, and those older- we even need our seniors! - all are welcome to grow in faith. There will also be opportunities for families with young children to participate in a shortened beginning of the session periodically, with the first opportunity for all ages on Dec. 3. 3 November 5, 2017 ~ All Saints Sunday November 2017 Worship Lessons All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. As November heralds the dying of the landscape in many northern regions, the readings and liturgy call us to remember all who have died in Christ and whose baptism is complete. At the Lord s table we gather with the faithful of every time and place, trusting that the promises of God will be fulfilled and that all tears will be wiped away in the new Jerusalem. First Reading: Revelation 7:9-17; Psalm: Psalm 34:1-10, 22; Second Reading: I John 3:1-3 Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:1-12 November 12, 2017 ~ Time after Pentecost Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory-the marriage feast of the lamb. First Reading: Amos 5:18-24; Psalm : Psalm 70; Second Reading: I Thessalonians 4:13-18 Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:1-13 November 19, 2017 ~ Time After Pentecost Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather around signs of hope-word, water, bread and wine-eager to welcome the good news of Christ s coming among us. First Reading: Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18; Psalm : Psalm 90:1-8 [9-11] 12; Second Reading: I Thessalonians 5:1-11 Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:14-30 November 23 rd, 2017 ~ Day of Thanksgiving At harvest time we join the psalmist in offering thanksgiving to God; You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. We are grateful for the abundance of the good things of God s creation. Paul reminds us that our thanksgiving overflows into generosity. As the body of Christ in the world, we give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:7-18; Psalm : Psalm 65; Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 Gospel Reading: Luke 17:11-19 November 26, 2017 ~ Christ the King - Last Sunday after Pentecost On this final Sunday of the church year our gospel is Jesus great story of judgement. In the end, the faithful are those who serve Christ by ministering to those who are poor, hungry, naked, sick, or estranged. In the first reading God is the shepherd who seeks the lost, weak, and injured and feeds them with justice. We gather this day to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet awaiting the consummation of all things yet to come. Acknowledging Christ as our merciful ruler, we go forth that his reign may be known in our loving words and deeds. First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-16, Psalm : Psalm 95:1-7a Second Reading: Ephesians 1:15-23 Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:

4 A Message From Pastor Liz... Grace and peace to you, People of Our Savior s, Have you thought of yourself as a saint before? God has made you a saint in your baptism, when God united you with Jesus! You are God s beloved, called to do God s work in the world. On November 5 th, All Saints Sunday, we celebrate all the Saints of God, especially remembering those who have been baptized and those who have died in the past year. One of my favorite things to remember on All Saints Day is that God unites us all together for life. God connects us with those who have died and those who are yet to come. God connects us with Christians all around the world. God gives us all love and life, and hope for the resurrection to come, when death will finally be destroyed. Being saints doesn t mean we are all perfect. It means we are all perfectly loved. Our saintliness comes from God alone, not from our own goodness. That s helpful to remember when we have times of frustration with other Christians- none of us has arrived at Christ s perfection, we simply have been given the benefit of his perfection when it comes to our standing before God. One of my favorite book series is the Inspector Gamache mysteries by Louise Penney. They make me think of the church community when they describe a central setting, a village, Three Pines. In this village, everyone is known and loved. The neighbors know who is struggling, who will say something not so nice, who is rather petty, etc. They know those points of roughness about each other. Yet these faults are not reasons for abandoning each other, but part of being a strong community together. They love each other even in the not so perfectness of knowing each other deeply. I ve never read something else that so aptly describes the church community for me. We are saints and sinners- redeemed and loved and still struggling with our own junk. The church most fully lives up to its calling when we see both the brokenness and the worthiness in each other and continue to welcome and love. Throughout this month there are many opportunities to grow in gratitude for the community of saints into which God has brought you. Celebrate the joy of community with our Church Basement Hotdish Dinner, grow in faith through Bible Studies, Sunday School, and our new Cross- Generational Faith Formation class. Worship with all the saints! We have a special guest speaker coming on November 12 to help us remember that we are connected in a Global community of saints. Laura served as an ELCA Young Adult in Global Mission in Palestine. $500 of the Hotdish Dinner will go to ELCA Global Mission, so this will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about one aspect of that ministry. Continue in prayer for all the saints, and give thanks for those who especially care for our elders and homebound through visitation ministry. There are so many ways you saints of God are actively sharing God s love! Thank you! It is a joy to be with you. In peace, Pastor Liz 4

5 Our Savior s Lutheran will host the Community Thanksgiving Service It will be held on Tuesday, November 7 pm at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Camp Vermilion Events November 3-5 D.I.Y. Crafting Weekend ELCA Good Gifts-God's Global Barnyard Did you know an animal can make a world of difference for a family in need? That's why ELCA Good Gifts offers animals as gifts. Animals provide food to eat, fertilizer to grow crops and milk, honey, and eggs to sell at the market. During Advent this year, the Outreach Ministry Team is asking that we rethink traditional gift giving this Christmas with ELCA Good Gifts. Give a gift that keeps on giving, with a gift to your loved one that also touches some one who is supported by ELCA ministries. We are planning to give a gift of a farm animal(s) to a family in need. More information will be available in the Dec. FRIEND. You bring your craft supplies, and we'll take care of everything else. The VLM staff will provide meals, housing in the new Voyageur Lodge, and focused time to work, nap, read, and enjoy fellowship with other participants. The weekend will also include devotional times and "show and tell" opportunities. Our November retreat will also include opportunities to try your hand at some projects with power tools. Our staff will guide you step-by-step and teach you how to use various tools in our shop for creating wood projects. A list of options will be sent to you to choose from once you register for that weekend. There will be an additional $10-$20 charge to cover materials. Participants are welcome to arrive after 3:00 pm on Friday each weekend, and the retreat ends at noon on Sunday. Cost: $150 per person and includes meals and lodging. $50 deposit is due with registration. Meals include supper on Friday, brunch and supper Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. Each room in the Voyageur Lodge has its own bathroom/shower, and sleeps 3-10 depending the room size/ arrangement. Contact the VLM office to reserve your spot today!

7 Maintenance Request Box To assist with communicating with Jack, our sexton, the property Board, and others that help maintain the church, a Maintenance Request Box has been implemented. It works well! The box and request forms are located above the mailboxes outside the office, so to be accessible to members. After a request has been made (i.e. ceiling light needs replacing in room 203) the form goes into the box. Jack and others will check the box, complete the task and then the form is put into the Property Mailbox so that the team is kept apprised. 8 FOOD SHELF NEWS Our Duluth Chum Food Shelf continues to show an increase in numbers served and an increase returning clients. The good news is the food donations have kept up with the demand and increased a lot over the past year. The Chum Food shelf has two main distribution centers (one on First Av W, one at Our Savior s). The statistics that are posted are from both distribution locations combined. There are other food pantries serving Duluth besides Chum s Food Shelf (these include The Vineyard and other individual churches). The point is, Duluth still has a growing need for food pantries. Listed below are some ideas in how you can help serve in this area. Continue to donate food items either directly to the Food Shelf or during the local food drives held in late October and March. You could maybe commit to providing one of the key distribution items needed per month. This would help stabilize the supply of key items needed each month. Talk to Dave Thornton about this. Volunteer to help serve at one of the Food Shelves (Our Savior s serves on Tuesdays and Thursdays). One thing we are considering for our church to expand on is to offer a listening center or place where people can sit and talk about their day with someone while they wait for their food request to be processed. This would be a time to show our Christian compassion to others (not by judging with advice but just providing an opportunity for someone to maybe share some coffee or juice and share what is on their mind). Talk to Dave Thornton or Pastor Liz for more information. Thanksgiving is always a time when food pantries are highlighted. This Thanksgiving the Food Shelf plans on giving about 220 Thanksgiving Dinners out to 3-4 person households. The estimated cost of this for the Food Shelf would be around $30/ food box. The Food Shelf requests donations to help defer this cost. Talk to Dave Thornton to get further details about the items to be placed in the boxes and where they plan to obtain them. Money is always needed at The Chum Food Shelf. They can purchase $2 worth of food from the Minnesota Food Bank for every $1. The problem is that they are restricted to what is available at the Food Bank at any given time, so some food is purchased through wholesale grocery outlets like Super One and Sysco. These are wholesale priced items, but cost more then what the Food Bank charges. I pray that God speaks to each of you about how you can best serve our neighbors still in need of food security. Dave Thornton; Christian Outreach Board, Our Savior s Lutheran Church, Duluth, MN. Growing the Church Forum Come. Pray. Listen. Share. Work. We are reading From Surviving to Thriving by ELCA pastor, Reverend Dr. John Krahn. He presents concise and practical ideas to help congregations gain strength. We meet the last Monday of the month at 6:30 pm in the library-lounge. Our next meeting will be Monday, January 29, We well be discussing Chapter 1: Stop Making Excuses and Start Doing Something and discuss p. 23 Action Items. Interested? Join in! 8
