3 May 2018 Worship Lessons May 6, 2018 ~ Sixth Sunday of Easter This Sunday s image of the life the risen Christ shares with us is the image of friendship. We are called to serve others as Jesus came to serve; but for John s gospel, the image of servanthood is too hierarchical, too distant, to capture the essence of life with Christ. Friendship captures the love, the joy, the deep mutuality of the relationship into which Christ invites us. The Greeks believed that true friends are willing to die for each other. This is the mutual love of Christian community commanded by Christ and enabled by the Spirit. First Reading: Acts 10:44-48; Psalm: Psalm 98; Second Reading: I John 5:1-6 Gospel Reading: John 15:9-17 May 13, 2018 ~ Seventh Sunday of Easter The gospel of Easter s seventh Sunday is always taken from the long prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John s gospel on the night before his death, and always includes Jesus desire that his followers will be one as he and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or intuitional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love and joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit who we have received by also await. Come, Holy Spirit! First Reading: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26; Psalm: Psalm 1; Second Reading: I John 5:9-13 Gospel Reading: John 17:6-19 May 20, 2018 ~ Day of Pentecost On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are created and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism. Ezekiel s vision shows the Spirit resurrecting and re-creating not just individuals but a whole people. Romans makes it clear that God is in the process of recreating the entire cosmos; yet the Spirit is also at work in the most intimate and personal way, praying in us with sighs too deep for words when we do not know how to pray. First Reading: Acts 2:1-21; Psalm: Psalm:104:24-34, 5b Second Reading: Romans 8:22-27 Gospel Reading: John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 May 27, 2018 ~ The Holy Trinity, First Sunday after Pentecost When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who God is beyond, before and after the universe: that there is community within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul's words today. When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him. First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8; Psalm: Psalm 29; Second Reading: Romans 8:12-17 Gospel Reading: John 3:1-17 3

4 Grace and peace to you, people of Our Savior s! On May 20 th, we celebrate Pentecost. This festival remembers when God sent the Holy Spirit upon the disciples after Jesus had ascended. The disciples are transformed from an uncertain, leaderless group into an empowered community that continues Jesus bold, boundary-breaking, life-giving ministry. The Holy Spirit is God s presence with us. Today, we celebrate that the Holy Spirit comes to us in baptism and remains with us always. We also pray for the Holy Spirit to come to us at confirmation. Through the Spirit, we know that God is with us! Martin Luther describes the work of the Holy Spirit in this way, I believe that by my own understanding or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him, but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and makes holy the whole Christian church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith. Daily in this Christian church the Holy Spirit abundantly forgives all sins- mine and those of all believers. On the last day the Holy Spirit will raise me and all the dead and will give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life. (Small Catechism: The Creed) The Holy Spirit creates faith in us and guides us into Jesus ministry. The Spirit is imaged as a dove or fire. The Spirit is powerful and beyond our control. It pushes us beyond our comfort zone to join Jesus at work. On Pentecost, we ll be welcoming new members into our congregation as they increase their commitment to living out their faith through this worshipping community. We ll also be blessed by a speaker from LSS who will share about the ministry they are doing in following Jesus. Partnerships like LSS are another extension of how the Spirit sends us out from the congregation into the community to serve and love like Jesus. If you really want to get into the festival spirit, you can wear red, orange, and yellow to celebrate the Spirit s fire among us! At Our Savior s we re exploring how the Spirit is pushing us out into service for the sake of our neighbors. Many of you have been doing important ministry through this congregation for a long time. Yet we and our neighborhood are continually changing. We ll be exploring if there are new things God is calling us into. We re already onto a good start with our community conversation regarding breakfasts at the end of April. You have been filled with the Holy Spirit. As you go out into the world, you carry this Spirit of God with you. Think of all the places you go and relationships you have- you bring God and you meet God there. God is with you! Pastor Liz 4

6 Accompaniment This past month Pastor Liz and I participated in CHUM s Expanding Horizons walk. This walk was an opportunity for participants to learn about CHUM, some of their primary partners who provide services, and the support system available for people in downtown Duluth. During the walk we visited the CHUM Food Shelf, The Damiano Center, Steve O Neil Apartments, San Marco Apartments, American Indian Community Housing Organization, Life House, CHUM Shelter/Drop-In Center, and the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial. A representative from each organization provided a tour, short presentation, and hosted a question and answer session during our visit. The overarching message throughout the day was accompaniment. Accompaniment is a scriptural and practical way of understanding our mission to serve our community. Through accompaniment, we grow to understand that the stories of human beings include the needs of human beings. Accompaniment means that we learn to see others, not from our human point of view, but from God s point of view. Thus, living into accompaniment requires listening to the stories of those around us, sharing resources throughout our community, recognizing local expertise, building networks, and developing a strategy to make decisions that are mutually beneficial to all stakeholders as we serve our neighbors. As Christians, we acknowledge that we have been reconciled to the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit, and we desire to spread this liberating message of God s peace, justice, love, and mercy to those who are hungry for such Good News. Accompaniment helps us remember we are called to enter into this work through relationship. It has been declared a national crisis. But what about locally? What are we seeing in our own community? According to the Minnesota Department of Health: In 2016 there were 395 total opioid overdose deaths. In 2016, opioid involved deaths continued to increase by 18% from 2015 for Minnesotans Minnesota has ranked first among all states in deaths due to drug poisoning among American Indians/ Alaskan Natives Admissions to treatment for heroin are some of the highest in the State in St. Louis County To understand the opioid crisis, we need to better understand the complexities of addiction. In this session, attendees will gain an understanding of the biopsychosocial model of addiction, as well as the many pathways to recovery. Additionally, we will share what one local agency is doing to reduce opioid overdose deaths. A few national opioid facts: From 1999 to 2014, more than 165,000 people three times the U.S. military deaths during the twenty years of the Vietnam War have died in the U.S. from overdoses related to prescription opioids. Four out of five heroin abusers started with prescription pain killers. The cost of opioid abuse to U.S. employers is estimated at $18 billion in sick days, lost productivity and medical expenses. Coffee and dessert will be provided 6
