Thursday, August 3, 2017 Spirit Valley Days Parade On Wednesday, August 2nd at 2:00 pm you are invited to meet in the church parking lot to decorate the OSL truck that our softball team, the Grand Avenue Slammers, will ride in for the Spirit Valley Day parade. Parade time is Thursday, Aug 3rd at 6:oo pm. Come and cheer them on. Call Committee Update The Call Committee has continued its work reviewing and interviewing candidates that would be a good match with the goals and plans of OSL. A candidate of choice has been selected and approved by the PPC. A meet and greet with Pastor Elizabeth Davis was held on July 23 during coffee hour. A meeting with Pastor Liz and the executive board was held afterwards with review and discussion of the financial package being offered. Pastor Liz has accepted the offer presented to her by the executive board. The congregational vote to approve both the candidate and the financial package takes place on July 30. Robert Jenko and Anna Sackette-Urness, co-chairs, would like to thank the Call Committee members, Pat Nilsen, Cathy Hannan, Noah Hobbs, Mary Unden and Jonathan Thornton, for all of their hard work and dedication to this process and to also thank the congregation for their support and prayers during this most exciting time for OSL. Following the service on July 30, there will be a Congregational meeting to vote on accepting Pastor Liz Davis as pastor and a vote on accepting the financial package. It is also Pot Luck Sunday so please bring a dish to share. Our Savior s Evangelical Lutheran Church 4831 Grand Avenue Duluth, MN Table of Contents P1. National Night Out! P1. 2 OSL Promotes Fair Trade OSL sells a variety of Equal Exchange products. Equal Exchange believes that we should expect no less from ourselves and each other than we demand of our farmer partners. For that reason we have organized ourselves as a democratic worker cooperative, now one of the largest in the country. A worker cooperative is an alternative for-profit structure based upon standard democratic principles. It is not designed to maximize profits, nor returns to investors, but rather to bring to the workplace many of the rights and responsibilities that we hold as citizens in our communities. Equal Exchange Mission: Equal Exchange's mission is to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker cooperatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world. 3 Pastor s Greeting by Rev. Joyce Piper Dear Friends in Christ, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you... " (Philippians 1:3) The July 30th vote for a new settled pastor will have occurred by the time this message is received. I anticipate a positive vote into a new chapter of ministry here at Our Savior's Lutheran that will likely begin in September. And I am so grateful for the year we have shared together. It has been such a blessing for me to return to parish ministry, from my recent synod ministry, and to serve as pastor together with you in Jesus' name in this time and place. Thanks be to God! And thanks to all of you! Time does pass so quickly. Attending my high school reunion in mid-july... well, it wasn't a 1000 years as mentioned in Psalm 90, but those 50 years were indeed swept away like a dream. I am grateful for the glad days that we have been privileged to share and wish you all God's blessings in the years to come. There will be more time to say farewell in August. In Christ, Pr. Joyce Foundation story At the end of last year, Martha called the church office to see if her services were needed at a funeral scheduled for later that day. The answer was yes, so she proceeded to drive to church and park in the lot. Having incurred a recent injury, she used the automatic door opener to access the elevator to the lower floor. Sandy Andler and Dianne Wentz greeted her enthusiastically as they prepared the Fellowship Hall and warmed the luncheon soon to follow. What is the point of this little anecdote? Her interactions that day touched items that would not have been possible, if not for the interest earnings on donations made to Our Savior s Evangelical Lutheran Church Foundation. Her call was answered on the new phone system, she parked on the refurbished parking lot, pressed the handicap assist button to open the Faith Haven side door, and entered the elevator recently brought into compliance. Furthermore, upon exiting, she was warmed by a major upgrade to the boiler system, set tables on new flooring made possible by extensive asbestos abatement, and helped place items in a new warming oven. Those seated around the kitchen table heard Jennifer accompany the guest soloist on the Clavinova and were moved by the fanfare on the restored trumpets of the pipe organ. Of course, there were dishes to wash that followed but that s another story. Could anyone imagine funding these nine items out of the general fund in an annual budget? (This is only a partial list.) But past members answered this call for financial stability and you can too. More information to follow in the September edition of The Friend. 3

4 August 2017 Worship Lessons August 6, 2017 ~ 9 th Sunday after Pentecost In today s first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink with out cost. Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. At the Eucharistic table we remember all who are hungry or poor in our world today. As we share the bread of life, we are sent forth to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-5; Psalm : Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21; Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5; Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21 August 13, 2017 ~ 10 th Sunday after Pentecost Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wink or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the Eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a sign of God s presence to others. First Reading: I Kings 19:9-18; Psalm : Psalm 85:8-13; Second Reading: Romans 10:5-15; Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:22-33 August 20, 2017 ~ 11 th Sunday after Pentecost In Isaiah we hear that God s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need. First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8; Psalm: Psalm 67; Second Reading: Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32; Gospel Reading: Matthew 15:[10-20], August 27, 2017 ~ 12 th Sunday after Pentecost In Isaiah the people are bid to look to their spiritual ancestors as the rock from which they were hewn. Jesus declares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter s bold confession of faith. God s word of reconciliation and mercy are keys to the church s mission. Paul urges us to not be conformed to this world, but to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, using our individual gifts to build up the body of Christ. From the table we go forth to offer our spiritual worship through word and deed. First Reading: Isaiah 51:1-6; Psalm : Psalm 138; Second Reading: Romans 12:1-8 Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:

6 OSL Parish Nurses Promote National Immunization Awareness Month National Immunization Awareness Month August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the lifespan, from infants to the elderly. August is an ideal time to make sure everyone is up-to-date on vaccines before heading back to school and to plan ahead to receive flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated is an easy way to stay healthy all year round. During the month of August, take the time to make sure that you and your loved ones have received all of the vaccinations you need. By making sure your vaccinations are up to date, you can help prevent harmful diseases from affecting you and your family. People of all ages need vaccines Getting vaccinated is important for people of all ages. Here s some information about vaccines that people need throughout their lives: Parents can protect infants and children from 14 serious childhood diseases by age 2 Preteens and teens need vaccines too! Getting adolescents vaccinated will also protect their friends and their family members. Adults: not sure if your immunization schedule is up-to date? Take this online quiz at: to see which vaccines you need. Seniors may need one or more vaccines, even if they received vaccines as a child or as a younger adult. August: A great time to get vaccinated Vaccines protect you all year round, but August is a great time to get vaccinated. In August, as summer winds down, it s a good time for you and your family to make plans to get the flu vaccine. The vaccine usually becomes available in mid- to late-august. Getting the vaccine early can help prevent you and your family members from getting the flu throughout all of flu season. When taking yourself and your family for your flu shots, you can also ask your health care provider about other routinely recommended vaccines you might need. For example, you should make sure that the whole family is up-to-date on their DTap/Tdap and MMRV boosters, each of which protects against several serious diseases: DTap or Tdap: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough) MMR or MMRV: measle, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) Finally, HPV vaccines help prevent girls and boys from getting cancers later in life that are caused by HPV. If you have questions about the HPV vaccine, ask your healthcare provider for more information. There are many routinely recommended vaccines for people of all ages. These are some examples of vaccines you can discuss with your healthcare provider. Make sure that you and your family are up-to-date on all recommended vaccines. Vaccines: Our best defense Vaccines are the best defense we have against these and other serious diseases, and it s important to make sure that you re up to date on all recommended vaccines. Use National Immunization Awareness Month as your chance to make sure that all your vaccinations are current. Talk with your healthcare provider about what vaccines you and your family need, and keep putting your healthiest foot forward! 6

As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. How do we respond to God s call to serve and love our neighbors? We faithfully steward the gifts God has so abundantly given to us. Although some think of stewardship as only a financial response to God s love, stewardship encompasses so much more than money. It is about how we use all that God has entrusted to our care our time, our talents and our treasures to love God and our neighbors, both inside and outside of the church walls and our homes. 10
