3 I hope this report finds all of you and your families doing well. Thanks to all of you for selecting me to be your Grand Knight for the Fraternal Year. Our past year was another great success due to great leadership and every one s participation. I am looking forward to working with all of you and I hope I can do as well as our past Grand Knights. We have a great Executive Council again this year and with all of us working together we will have another productive year. I would like to try to shorten our meetings if possible, so we can have time to talk and enjoy each other s company. I would like to ask all of you to attend as many meetings as possible. Your input is very important to your Council! Our first Fraternal get together for this year is our Member Appreciation Dinner on July 11 th at the Collingwood Curling Club and the cost is FREE! to all members and their families. 4 Brothers, As hard as it is to believe we have completed another fraternal year in Father Lally Council. At the same time, I have completed my term as Grand Knight. I want to say Thank You to all my Brothers of Council 5793 for the support you have given me for the past year. It is that support as well as all of us working together that makes our fraternal year successful. I could write a book on all we have done, but it isn t necessary because we have the good works and accomplishments of the past year to look back on and they are there to take us forward. We are so fortunate to have such a great group of committed Brother Knights in this Council and it shows by all we do and the success we achieve. I am looking forward to continue the good works of Council as Trustee and will support our new Grand Knight as I m sure you all will. Once again Thank You because without your help and commitment we would not be in the position we are in today and I as Past Grand Knight would not be able to boast about our great year of successes and achievements. 5 Hello Brother Knights, As we close this fraternal year it begins a new one. I thank you for electing me a this year s DGK. I look forward to working with the new executive and this Council as a whole. Hopefully, we can continue to grow as a Council and have more Brothers to do our great work in this community. Congratulations to all our new Brothers that have joined us and same to all those that took a position on the executive. Regarding our charity raffle this year it was a great success! Thank you to all that took tickets home and those that helped out at Loblaws and Giant Tiger. With determination and a good co-chairman "Jerry (can sell) Libryk" it was once again a sellout for our Council. With any luck we will have sold another winner in our area. We will be holding a photo-op in the next week or so at Loblaws to present thank you plaques to Nic Witriak and John/Jim Hanna, managers of Loblaws & Hanna Ford. It was a pleasure to chair this event once again, and even better to accomplish selling all 1100 tickets! Thank you once more to all that helped out. God Bless Michael Phillips, DGK Brother Knights; Below you will see the list of our Council Executive Officers for the upcoming fraternal year. A phrase that comes to mind when I think of these men who stood for their respective positions is ready to serve. A discussion among the disciples arose in Luke 22:27, where they argued about who was first among them. Jesus settled it when He said Yet I am among you as the One who serves. When He washed the disciples feet, He showed them and us by example that we should serve one another and by extension serve our fellow man. As a Knight we have the opportunity to imitate Jesus when we serve at a fundraising event to benefit our community. In all we do, even our routine daily tasks, we can carry them out with an attitude of service. If you haven t volunteered for some time, you can start by helping at an upcoming event. It can be a lot of fun cooking in the kitchen at a spaghetti dinner or communion breakfast. As well, there is camaraderie and a sense of accomplishing something good for others. Let us ask for the Lord s help in recognizing and acting upon the opportunities as they arise for us to follow in His steps and willingly serve others. 6 Know your Brother: Domenic Sanfilippo Well this is something new to me, I m always talking about someone else and now I need to speak about myself. What can I say other than what you see is what you get. I as well as my five siblings were all born right here in Collingwood at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. My Parents were married right here in St. Mary s Church on November 24, 1952 almost 63 years ago. I as well as my Brothers and Sisters were baptized received the sacraments of reconciliation, first communion, confirmation and most of us were married here at St. Mary s Church. Needless to say I and my family have been a part of St. Mary s Parish for a long time. Over the years growing up in Collingwood I have seen many changes, way too many to remember let alone mention. I remember going to St. Mary s School that was right here in the building that was previously on this property. I specifically remember my first day of school; I was going into grade one and my grandfather whose name was also Domenic brought me to school. My grandpa was old at the time and wasn t keen on what to do or more specifically how to get a six year old into the grade one class so he thought because he knew the school principal, at the time Mr. Noonan, that he would leave me with him. Well he brought me upstairs to the grade seven and eight class that was full of what seemed to me as adults, found me a chair and said you stay here and left. I don t know if he ever did see Mr. Noonan that day but I did eventually get into the grade one class and I still remember how much I did not want to be there. I spent what seems to be the first month sitting with my older brother on the grade three side of the room. My brother complained to my mother that it took him three years to get to the other side of the room and now he had to deal with me. Well that was the first of many times that my brother would come to my recue at school. Our school was small and when we walked to and from school, no buses back then, we would always come across the public schools kids that had no time, or use for us Catholics so as you can imagine the odd fight arose. All in all after the years went by, some of our best friends were the ones we fought as school kids. My Dad came to Canada from Italy more specifically Sicily in July of He was the only one of his family of 8 Brothers and Sisters that would immigrate to Canada and make it his home. When my Dad arrived he worked in Valleyfield Quebec for a couple of years before moving to Toronto to stay with an Uncle of his, who had a fruit store. My Dad grew up growing and selling fruit so he knew in some capacity that is where he would make his living. While living in Toronto with his Uncle he would work in the store without pay for his room and board and would work on his own peddling door to door two days a week. He told me many stories about him trying to sell produce, getting on street cars to go to better neighborhoods and try to sell. He did this for a few months before traveling to Collingwood to visit some families that had already come to Collingwood that were originally from his home town in Sicily. This is where he met my mother. My parents married shortly after as I mentioned earlier here at St. Mary s Church. As a matter of fact when St. Mary s Church celebrated its 125 th anniversary the wedding picture in the commemorative booklet is that of my parents wedding. At the time Father Jim had requested old photos for the booklet and that is one that was chosen and included in it. Shortly after my parents married my Dad started to sell fruit to the many small stores that were in Collingwood and area. He and my Mom were a team and it was a family business that would eventually involve all their family. Growing up and as the business grew all of us worked after school and summers helping and working to ease the load that my parents had in running the business and raising a family of six children. After school we would head home and would work until we all helped to get finished and then get to our homework. I was never too interested in studies but more interested in working with my Dad in the family business, so needless to say I missed a few days of school. I loved to drive the trucks and go to the Toronto Market. I got to meet a lot of people and it was what felt right for me. I had the same opportunity to go on to become a Doctor or Lawyer as my brothers, but I did not want to spend that much time studying so after many discussions I began to work full time with my Dad and Mom. I now think that my Dad wanted me to see that it was a hard job and big commitment. As a teenager my Dad would send me to market alone leaving home at 2 in the morning driving the truck to the Toronto Food Terminal buying the load of produce and load up the truck and drive back. I would then unload the truck.

7 Know your Brother continues: rotate the stock in the coolers and if lucky be awake long enough to have supper. As you can understand I did not have too much time to get into trouble and at the same time I began to understand and appreciate hard work and commitment. I know that this was teaching me what I was deciding to do for a living and was his way to let me get a feel of what was really involved in the life decision I was making and whether or not if it was right for me. A few times I gave it a second thought, but I can honestly say today, after almost forty years in the produce business, that it was a decision that to this day I would never regret. Working with my Dad I was taught firsthand what honesty, hard work and integrity meant and it is the standard in which I live my life today. In early spring of 1978 I met the love of my life when my wife Antonietta came to Collingwood to visit her sister. Her sister and her husband were family friends of ours for many years and when I first saw Antonietta I knew it was time to stop looking and time to get serious. After a short engagement Antonietta and I were married here at St. Mary s by Father Basil Breen in December of Within a year our first son was born Giovanni. He was a beautiful baby and at the ripe age of 23 I was a husband a father and running a business. We were blessed with three more sons Michael, Tino and Marco. Giovanni died June 18, We are blessed with a beautiful angel in heaven. Having the support of a close family was most important during this difficult time for us. Father Basil Breen was also a big part of our life at that time because it was his comfort and kind words and the faith of our Holy Church that brings you through times like that. My son Michael has had a picture of him and his big brother Giovanni with him always. In 2007 Antonietta and I became in-laws when Mike and Lisa were married and since then we have two beautiful grandsons Jacob and Zachary. After many years of dodging the likes of Doug Murray, Jim Madden and Peter Reid and many other Knights I finally gave in to becoming a Knight of Columbus in 1995 and received my third degree in June of I guess it was Peter that finally got me to sign up, he was a true Knight in every sense of the word and if you did not have the privilege of meeting Peter I am sorry that you missed that opportunity. I remember hearing that I would not have to commit to do any thing or attend any meetings that I did not have the time for. Well I was on the executive before I received my third degree and I haven t missed too many meetings since. I have held numerous positions on the Council executive including Recorder, Treasurer, Deputy Grand Knight, and Trustee and for a few terms as Grand Knight. I was also District Warden for two years with PGK and FDD Don McDonald. I became a fourth degree member at an exemplification ceremony at Martyrs Shrine in Midland in One of the many highlights during my time as a Knight has been the implementation of our Annual Golf Tournament and the success it has achieved over the years. The first year I think we had less than 30 people in the tournament and since then we have had as many as 136 golfers. The most rewarding thing for me has been bringing in new members and a year or two ago I received a certificate from supreme stating that I have recruited 25 new Brothers into the order. I did not realize that at all. Over and above all is the satisfaction that I had and the honour to recruit my Dad into the Knights and accompany him to all his three degrees. Most recently I had the privilege to see my three sons as well as two more of my nephews join our order, and it will be a proud day for me on June 7 th when they become third degree members. I was told at the time that I joined that you will get much more out of the Knights than you put in and that has proven to be so true. I didn t have a lot of spare time but I did not want to let the council or my Brothers of Father Lally Council down so I put forth the extra effort to help. I have met some great people through the Knights and made some great friends. This is something that I hope works the same for all the Brothers of this Council and the entire Knights of Columbus organization. I thank the council for the opportunity to help in this capacity and for the support and satisfaction I receive from my Brother Knights. The Knights has been a big part of my way of giving back to the church and the community. I still don t have any extra time, I work over 60 hours a week but I still fit in the good works of this council and thrive to promote what we stand for Charity, Unity and Fraternity

9 Brothers, Our annual golf tournament is quickly approaching and I want to make sure you are all aware of it. I have a good number of you already on my list as golfers but I have a greater number of you that are still silent. Please try and come out and enjoy our biggest function of the year. It is geared as a family fun day so if you are not a scratch golfer (as I am) don t worry, you will still have a good time and enjoy a excellent day. If you prefer to just come out for the meal, I have dinner only tickets for $35.00 each, which is below our cost. This tournament is put together as a fraternal day as well as a fundraising day so it will only succeed if you participate. Please look over the flyer in this newsletter and let me know that you will be attending. Also if you or you know of someone in business that would sponsor a hole or sponsor a cart or donate please give them the information. You can also pass on their information to me or one of the golf committee to follow up. Let s all work together to make this tournament another success for our Council. Domenic Sanfilippo, PGK
