May the Peace and Joy of the Risen Christ be with all of us. Brothers: I hope this Lent has been a time of reflection and insight for everyone. As we look forward to the joy of Easter and the risen Christ let us remember the great price He paid for our salvation. Over the years there have been many challenges facing our Council and many changes to our environment as knights. We had to give up our building which provided us with a home, a place for social events and opportunities to raise funds for charity. We are faced with the reality of dwindling big councils and the rise of parish councils. Our numbers here at 1453 are falling dangerously low. No one attends meetings and it is an ever challenging endeavour to fill executive positions. Churches are closing and the low number of priests has led to families of parishes. But all is not doom and gloom. Supreme and State have initiated changes, which not everyone is happy about, but at least they are trying. Ontario is now a pilot for e-membership. The Domestic Church initiative is an effort to grow the faith from the family out. Now it is our turn as a council to see if we can t do something to grow our council. We are in desperate need of ideas. While not all efforts may succeed, trying anything new is better than lying down and dying. We are caught in a catch 22 situation. We need activities to attract new members yet we need members to carry out the activities. So if anyone has suggestions we would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Personally I think a good start would be if more members could see their way to attend meetings and prayers for deceased members as well as our Memorial Mass and fish fries. (Continued on Page 3)

We assume it will be Mothers Day again, and with the pastors consent at St. Cyrils and Holy Trinity again. More information will be available at our Good Friday Fish Fry and April meeting. Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday, is a relatively new addition to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day that he canonized Saint Faustina. District Report: Mario Iatonna DD #10 ONLINE MEMBERSHIP IS HERE! As we each travel our own journey over the years in fulfillment of God's plan, we face inherent friction between generations. When we are teenagers, no one understands us and everything else seems to operate under ancient rules. When we are middle age, we are too busy living life to give much time to what teenagers and seniors are thinking. When we are seniors, the changes seem to come too quickly and often at the expense of what we held dear throughout all of our lives to that point. Nothing has divided the generations in recent decades as much as has the proliferation of technology, in general, and social media, in particular. While us old folk dabble a bit in social media, it is not an integral part of our daily lives, as it is with those who are younger and have grown up with it. If the Knights are to remain relevant to these upcoming generations, certain past approaches must change with the times. One area that this change is being seen is in the area of online recruitment for new Knights' members. We still largely use a multi-copy, paper Form 100 to add new members to the rolls. While mostly effective, it is a tedious and lengthy process to get new candidates officially on the list of members. However, this is now potentially changing, as Ontario has been selected as one of the areas to pilot a new online membership initiative. Online membership is meant to supplement traditional recruiting by offering a new, digital experience for certain men, who may not be readily accessible through traditional recruiting efforts. Once a man has joined online, the aim will be to incorporate him into a council and get him fully integrated with that council's activities. It is a faster way to get men to join and allows the Knights' marketing efforts to directly target younger men who live in the digital world. As this is only a pilot, feedback from existing councils and members is essential to ensure that the initiative meets its intended objectives. 3 Page 3 Knight Life April - May 18 Our Ladies Corner: Dear Ladies, Due to poor attendance our meeting was deferred to May 16 when we have to decide where to hold our June luncheon meeting. Notes: (Continued from Page 2) DGK Michael Harrigan From the time I joined the knights I was always attracted to the notion that the Knights are the strong right hand of the Church and I believe some of the changes that have been put in place by Supreme will further that ideal. So let us rally around Council 1453 and see if we can t continue our support of the Church, the needy and one another. If Christ could sacrifice for us surely we can sacrifice for those less fortunate than ourselves. Elections are quickly approaching. This would be a great time to get involved either by coming out and voting for those who will lead our council or by volunteering to stand for a position on the executive. The work is easy and the time is minimal. Nominations will be taken at the April meeting and before elections at the May meeting. If you wish to stand for a position but cannot attend meeting in May you must send a letter of your intent to run to the Financial secretary Brother Ray Dupuis before the May meeting. In your prayers please remember our deceased members and those members suffering from illness. In closing I would like to wish every member of Council 1453 and their families a very Holy and Happy Easter. The family is the first school of human values, where we learn the wise use of freedom. 6 Page 6 Knight Life April - May 18 Life Matters Andrew J. Despins, Knights of Columbus Insurance Are you paying too much for your mortgage insurance? You may have taken out the insurance that your bank or credit union offered you when you applied for a mortgage. If you did, that was good thinking. What you owe on your home is probably the single biggest debt you'll ever incur, so it makes sense to have it fully insured. But, like many other people, you may not have known that you can obtain better coverage at a lower rate by buying your own individual insurance policy! Generally speaking, the insurance offered by the bank is a "one size fits all" product. Individual insurance, on the other hand, is based on your own medical condition. If you're in good health, why would you want to pay the same rate as someone who smokes a pack a day? Should you change banks when your mortgage renews, you may lose your bank insurance coverage and have to reapply at your new lender. With an individual policy, you can take your insurance coverage with you without ever having to submit new medical information. The financial institution is named as beneficiary on insurance from the bank. You pay the premiums, but they'll get the money should something happen to you. An individual policy, however, allows you to name your own beneficiary meaning your loved ones can decide when (or if) they want to pay off the mortgage or if they'd rather invest the proceeds instead. Not in picture, Linda Dupuis, who was working but took the pictures. AS I SEE IT! An editorial of sorts by Bob Burns, editor, PGK PFN. What is the future of Council 1453? The first in Essex County, the oldest in this area? Our membership is stagnant, mostly inactive and sedentary. At our last meeting we had only our executive, minus 3! Our last election attracted only the executive, minus ONE! Is there any interest left, does anyone care? Last issue of KnightLife was mailed to 75 Windsor area members, and produced two responses, no body extra at a meeting and a poor turnout at our Fish Frys. KnightLife itself is endangered as well. After 90 years of almost continuous publication we are being considered as a disposable expense by some executive members. They are considering the only connection with our general membership be reduced to 4 a year. That makes financial sense, but if only every three months, why not just one annual booklet? Or any at all? Just a waste of money, time, effort and hope. KADEC puts on a FREE Christmas dinner and party for all members, but only 60 people show up? Is there any interest in saving this Council? In growing it? I have not given up hope yet, and I am sure there s still a handful of us that do still care. Let us band together and fight for our history to continue.. As for KnightLife, I am trying my best to keep expenses down and make it successful. I am sorry some don t see it that way. In my opinion, we should find advertisers to finance the mailing of 100 or whatever our memberships are, and revert back to 10 issues a year. I know it s more work for me, but it may work to keep the general membership informed, and may peak some interest in a few. Does anybody agree? Let me know!
