4 Saint of the Month Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Feast Day April 17 St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American woman of North America to be canonized by the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656, in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon in upstate New York. She was the daughter of Kenneronkwa, a Mohawk chief, and Tagaskouita, an Algonquin woman, who had been captured in a raid, then adopted and assimilated into the tribe. Tagaskouita had been baptized and educated by French missionaries in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. The Mohawk suffered a severe smallpox epidemic from 1661 to 1663, causing high fatalities. When Tekakwitha was around five years old, her baby brother and both her parents died of smallpox. She survived, but was left with facial scars and impaired eyesight. She was adopted by her father's sister and her husband. The Jesuits account of Tekakwitha said that she was a modest girl who avoided social gatherings; she covered much of her head with a blanket because of the smallpox scars. She became skilled at traditional women s arts, which included making clothing and belts from animal skins; weaving mats, baskets and boxes from reeds and grasses; and preparing food from game, crops and gathered produce. She took part in the women's seasonal planting and intermittent weeding. As was the custom, she was pressured to consider marriage around age thirteen, but she consistently refused. Eventually, her aunts gave up their efforts to get her to marry. In the spring of 1674 at age eighteen, Tekakwitha met the Jesuit Father Jacques de Lamberville, who was visiting in the village. Most of the women were out harvesting corn, but Tekakwitha had injured her foot and was in the cabin. In the presence of others, Tekakwitha told him her story and her desire to become a Christian. After this she started studying the catechism with him. Lamberville wrote in his journal in the years after her death about Tekakwitha. This text described her, before she was baptized, as a girl who was mild-mannered and behaved very well. Lamberville also stated that Kateri did everything she could in order to stay holy in a secular society, which often caused minor conflicts with her longhouse residents. Judging her ready, Lamberville baptized Tekakwitha at the age of 19, on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1676 Tekakwitha was baptized "Catherine" after St. Catherine of Siena (Kateri was the Mohawk form of the name.) Some Mohawks opposed her conversion and accused her of sorcery. Lamberville suggested that she go to the Jesuit mission of Kahnawake, located south of Montreal on the St. Lawrence River, where other native converts had gathered. Catherine joined them in Father Cholonec wrote that Tekakwitha said, I have deliberated enough. For a long time my decision on what I will do has been made. I have consecrated myself entirely to Jesus, son of Mary, I have chosen Him for husband and He alone will take me for wife. Claude Chauchetière and Pierre Cholenec were Jesuit priests who played important roles in Tekakwitha s life. Both were based in New France and in Kahnawake. Chauchetière was the first to write a biography of Tekakwitha s life, followed by Cholenec, in 1695 and 1696, respectively. Chauchetière came to believe that Catherine Tekakwitha was a saint. In his biography of Kateri, he stressed her "charity, industry, purity, and fortitude." Around Holy Week of 1680, friends noted that Tekakwitha's health was failing. When people knew she had but a few hours left, villagers gathered together, accompanied by the priests Chauchetière and Cholenec, the latter providing the last rites. Catherine Tekakwitha died at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 1680, in the arms of her friend Marie-Therèse. Chauchetière reports her final words were, "Jesus, Mary, I love you." After her death, the people noticed a physical change. Cholenec later wrote, This face, so marked and swarthy, suddenly changed about a quarter of an hour after her death, and became in a moment so beautiful and so white that I observed it immediately. Her smallpox scars were said to disappear. Under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, she was beatified in 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica on 21 October Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.

5 Brothers, I hope that this newsletter finds you and your families well. I have a number of things I would like to report on and needless to say our Council has been busy as usual. First I would like to mention how well received our pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday was. We had an excellent turnout and once again some excellent food was served and enjoyed by all. I want to thank everyone that worked to make this another success for our Council but I would like to give special thanks to Brother Mike Sangregorio for chairing this event once again. Each event we do need s someone to be the leader and get things organized and we are fortunate to have many Brothers that are willing and do take on this roll. Thank you. I am very proud of the work our Council has put into membership. With that hard work we are fortunate to have had the pleasure of welcoming three new members to our Council. I want to welcome officially our newest first degree Brothers Jason DeHetre, Joe Manchisi and Goldwyn Chan. Our first degree team did a fantastic job on the degree on March 15 th and I would like to thank everyone that worked on the degree. I also want to thank our Council Chaplain Father Gerard for his attendance at the degree and also mention that our honouree for that degree was our PGK Brother Lorne Winkler. Special thanks to our degree Captain Denis Farley for his commitment and leadership with the degree team. Special thanks to our PGK and DD Michael Dynes and his wife Dorothy for their work on the membership weekend as well as the open house. As you may or may not have heard our Council will be preparing and serving a pasta supper in support of St. Mary s HVAC fundraising efforts. This will take place on Saturday May 6 th after the 5:15 mass. All proceeds from this event will go to St. Mary s Church. I have some of this already organized but as always I am looking for many helpers. I am hoping to do the same type of serving we have done for the pancake supper with Knights serving the guests at the tables. So I am in need of quite a few helpers and I am counting on you. I will be bringing more information as we get closer but in the meantime I want you to mark this date on your calendars and please volunteer to help with this worthwhile cause. I urge you all to attend our April general meeting on Tuesday April 4 th. We will be holding our nominations for our executive for the new fraternal year. As most of you know we usually hold our nominations in May and election in June but we are moving everything up a month. With our election in May instead of June our newly elected Brothers will have a chance to work with the outgoing Brothers and this will help with a smooth transition. Our Council will be looking after the Stations of the Cross on Friday March 31 st at 7pm here at St. Mary s. This is the one when we do the reading as well as the usual carrying of the Cross and Candles. Please try and attend and support our parish and the Council. We will also be helping Father Gerard at the first communion on Sunday April 30 th. We will be at the 11am mass as well as the 2pm first communion mass. Our Council will be handing out rosaries to all those that will be receiving their first communion. As mentioned the next two meetings are very important for the future of our Council so please make a strong effort to attend. Fraternally, Domenic Sanfilippo, Grand Knight

In addition, the Committee may offer a substitute resolution, which modifies or refines the rationale and/or proposed action of one or more submitted resolutions. The substitute resolution may articulate a more precise or comprehensive statement of the issue or may summarize the substance of multiple resolutions pertaining to the same issue. Where multiple resolutions pertaining to the same issue have been submitted, the Committee may also recommend adopting the one resolution that best expresses the State Council s position, and taking no action on the others. Section 12: Resolution, Etc. Rules of Presentation and Rules of Order: The Chairman of the Resolutions Committee shall present the Committee s report at the Annual General Meeting of the State Council, announcing a recommendation for each resolution, petition or amendment under consideration, along with a motion to accept that recommendation. Resolution 11: Financial Support for Columbian Squires $25 Per Council; be it resolved that: as the Ontario State Council, we prioritize this support with a $25.00 per council per year assessment. Be it further resolved: that the Ontario State Board will add this assessment of $25.00 to each council's per capita billings and allocate the funds exclusively toward the Ontario Squires Board budget and operations, and this will supplement the Ontario State boards own budget toward the Squires program, beginning in the Fraternal year. Resolution 12: Financial Support for Columbian Squires $1 Per Member; be it resolved that: Ontario State bill each council $1.00 per member to each council. This to be done in the month of March of each fraternal year with proceeds being sent to the Ontario Columbian Squires program. 10 NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2017/2018 COUNCIL 5793 EXECUTIVE The Deputy Grand Knight and your Editor have been seeking nominations for the upcoming Council year. Please help us out by coming forward yourself or at least make a serious nomination of a Brother Knight. This Council will not survive and succeed without your active participation. If you value what we have been able to achieve in your Parish and in your Community you need to be involved in the future of this Council. Often in the past Brothers are nominated simply to fill a vacancy. That is not good enough! We need your commitment to give of your skills and a few hours a month of your time. It is simply not enough to say I am a Knight of Columbus!. You must be an active Knight, pitching in at a breakfast, raising funds for charity, actively participating in the liturgy at our Church. No one should take a step back and say; I have no time, I ve done enough, I need a break! Your Brothers need you now. Brother Gerard and I have been quite successful with nominations, but we still need a few Brothers to make a commitment for the coming year. Could you be our next Recorder, Advocate of maybe a Trustee??
